Windows 8 - Windows 8.1 now available!

Let's be honest, most people just use computers these days for running the odd program, such as Word or Photoshop, & mainly their internet browser. The change from Windows Vista to Windows 7 has made no discernible difference to me whatsoever.

Who has a desktop, or a laptop, & has the urge to start touching the screen? Nobody, because it's awkward & unnecessary. Nothing is going to change in how you go about your daily business on a computer - that being through a mouse and keyboard.

You say that, but look at the success of the iPAD.

Well that's what this is really all about - getting one over on Apple & Google in the tablet/phone space.

Looking good so far, I'd like to see more of how the standard view works with a touchscreen first.

A Tablet/Laptop hybrid (slide out keyboard) at the right price would interest me next year.

Well, it's not finished. Another 12 months worth of development at least.

Plus MSN Messenger & Skype should be intertwined by then.

Linux distros always need 12 months worth of development at any time.

I'm never going to have Windows on a touchscreen device, so nothing in that video looked good to me.

Adapting an existing touchscreen OS to fit a tablet.... yeah you're right that makes no sense

This is a good step for MS. Microsoft were trying to get everyone using Tablet PCs years before Apple. The problem was it just the desktop OS, which although waaaaaay more powerful than Apple's and Google's effort, it wasn't designed for touchscreens and was a tad fiddly.

This new OS seems to have the best of both worlds, a full OS at the backend for real applications coupled with an interface designed for touchscreens. Still though, I want to use a mouse and keyboard on my desktop so I'd just flick back to the nice Windows 7 esque interface I saw when they launched Word. :lol:

I think for that sort of user the addition of ARM support could be the biggest change as it should lead to a decent improvement in battery life.

... so the same it's always been?

PC Gaming still has a ton of players, but even 10 years ago the majority of computer usage was by businesses and families to use for browsing and the like.

I've been keeping an eye on this since the first bits of info slipped out. Windows 7 is almost perfect :wub:

I just hope they work on the Media Center portion of the OS and let you customise it a bit more than you can currently.

XP was an anomaly. Between 1995 and 2001 we saw, what, six desktop Windows OSes? Even discounting NT4 and 2000 as enterprise products, that still leaves Windows 95, 98, ME and XP. Assuming 8 makes it out next year, it will have been roughly three years since Windows 7, the same three years between 95 and 98, more than the two years between 98 and ME, the two years between Vista and 7, and even more than the one year between ME and XP. XP Service Pack 2 could easily have been sold as a whole new OS too if MS felt they could get away with it.

I'm mainly a Linux user at home, and currently use an Android phone and an iPad, but I think Windows 8 looks superb. It's all so well thought out, and the side by side multitasking feature is ingenious. Having the entire traditional desktop available is just the icing on the cake, and should make it fantastic for convertible devices like the Asus Transformer.

Interesting that we are moving closer towards a single OS for mobile and desktop devices. Makese sense given the rising power of mobile devices and the convergence of their functionality with that of home computers. Mobile devices are probably going to be much wider used in future, so it makese sense of desktop systems to become gradually more similair in how they opperate purely for ease of use.

Not sure if I like that trend but it's not like we can do anything to stop it.

I don't think we're actually losing anything. The phones are just gaining more "high-end" capabilities, and the desktop is just learning to accommodate lower power devices.

Even with all this, the feature I'm most looking forward to is the ability to mount ISO files without using other software.
