This all sounds rather promising so far. I decided to go with a Windows phone a couple of months ago (Lumia 735) and I prefer it to my old iPhone in almost every way. The main issue people seem to cite is the lack of apps and this move should hopefully put an end to that. I also love the idea of using my phone as a portable desktop.

Have MS committed to a final release date yet? I've toyed with the idea of installing the Insider Preview but I don't want to inadvertently brick my handset.

Microsoft weren't kidding when they said Windows 10 would be the same OS across all devices.

That's a really good idea (assuming it works properly!).

Is task view and multiple desktops new? I just noticed it yesterday after an update and it's brilliant. Very much like having multiple desktops and much better than alt-tab.

I don't the sound of "continuing service" sounds ominously like they're going down the subscription route with future OS's.

I would imagine it will be like android or iOS you just get the is as part of the device and they will make their money from the services they provide.

Spot on, Microsoft are merely aligning Windows with Android and iOS.

The days of getting a new OS by taking a box off a shelf in PC World are long gone. Many of the new features in Windows 10 could have been delivered as small updates to Windows 8.

I guess I'm just being overly cynical.

Do not worry, you may be right on the business side of things, seems Enterprise will have a lot more focus in 10, and that already is subscription only

The subscription thing will worry me if it becomes the only way to get a Windows license. Apparently profits for Office 365 over traditional licenses are a net 80% increase. Just looking at that number you know someone is getting screwed.

I actually use 365, however I have not paid a penny for it as I got it free from the college I go to for evening classes. Also, I see a lot of tablets coming with free subscriptions to the service so it might be possible keep going for quite a feel before actually having to buy MS office again.

I subscribe to 365 and it is brilliant, we also use it at work as it works out far cheaper for organisations of our size over traditional office licensing.

In the business world the 1TB OneDrive is a massive benefit, it means that you can effectively bin off a load of file server infrastructure and use OneDrive as your "home drive" locations. You then pay a bit extra and can add in the cloud based SharePoint and you no longer need shared drives and can use e-form and SharePoint workflow to automate paper processes, then you can bit intranets etc. as it can do that too, your data is now in the cloud so for "file users" you don't need a VPN service which means less of a need for huge internet pipes. Its huge.

Leveraged right it can bring you massive savings to your business, but done wrong it doesn't do much at all. To a business it is so much more than just Office.

Cortana - Not just for Windows.

Microsoft has just announced that Cortana will be spreading her fingers to more pies by jumping to Android and iOS devices.

Currently Microsoft's Halo based virtual assistant is exclusive to Windows Phone - this marks the first time any of the key virtual assistant programs have adapted onto other another OS.

Dedicated apps are launching in the Google Play Store and App Store giving you the same abilities as Windows Phone including reminders and flight tracking.

A few features don't make the jump to the platform as the app can't tap into the OS as easily, so you'll lose hands-free activation and options to launch apps directly.

Fair play to Microsoft. They could have kept it as Windows exclusive, and nobody would have cared, but by making it available on different phone platforms, it increases the number of users than can access all the syncing features.
