Windows 8 is basically just Windows 7 but better in all the ways that really matter already.

If you have a illogical aversion to Metro (or whatever you want to call it), its already quite possible to work on Windows 8 without ever having to go near it.

How do I get my most frequently used programs list?

Just pin them on the taskbar

If I wanted to do that, I'd have done it in Windows 7. I don't want a taskbar filled with icons! I want an automatically populated list, like we've had since two thousand and strawberry floating one! I don't want to have to strawberry float about because Microsoft decided my PC should be a strawberry floating tablet instead.

But if you use programs frequently than they would be open on the taskbar most of the time anyway? :? Its just moaning for moanings sake theres plenty of ways you can have quick access to programs you use a lot yet you moan cos theres one way you cant do it!

The metro start page is fine. It's a full screen start menu. Hating it doesn't make any sense.

Hope you can turn the start bar off. I don't need or want it.

Hopefully it will be like the various start options now and you can set the version you want.

I'll hopefully keep my full screen tiles start as I really like now I have it all setup nicely for what I use.

I will continue to use StartIsBack, and pretend I never upgraded from 7.

Fortunately they added a few bells and whistles to 8 that now make it usable in its unadulterated form. Namely, there is a power/shutdown button that you can reach without having to go through several different options and the apps now show up on the task bar and can be closed like normal windows (actually closed, not just hidden from view while they feed on your memory). Still not as convenient as the start menu though.

You should have done it in Windows 7 because Jump Lists on programs are really useful. Complaining about filling the task bar with icons seems a bit strange.

You can add anything you want as a toolbar on the taskbar, for instance if you create a new toolbar and point it at...

%ProgramData%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

...that'll add a toolbar with shortcuts to your programs (as you got in the Start Menu on Windows 7).

If that's not good enough and you are willing to use the Start Screen, then it is possible to get it to automatically appear as just a list of programs at even order it by most recently used.

Those options are available by right clicking the Taskbar selecting Properties and going to the Navigation tab.

Or you could already create shortcuts to any of the power options and put them anywhere you want to (on the desktop, taskbar or in a toolbar).

That'll be until Windows 9 comes out then. Support for Windows 7 ends in 2015. ;)

Windows 9 has been planned for 2015 for some time, although it should be a lot more than Windows 8 with a Start menu. That bit was originally planned for Windows 8 itself.

That's half true, Extended Support (which is what ended for XP this year) for Windows 7 runs till January 2020.

Techradar wrote:Two screenshots of what appears to be the next version of Microsoft's flagship OS, Windows 9, have been published by a well-known leaker.

Posted on myce, the first shows a rejigged Start menu that incorporates tiles a la Metro while the second one apparently shows an app running in Windows mode (rather than full-screen).

The screen captures appear to have been taken on July 14 while the build, called #9795, which was compiled a day before as part of the uip_dev feature build lab, appears to make changes to the user interface.

They have shed more light on what appears to be a rethink of the start menu, although there's no way to prove the legitimacy of the screenshots; even if they were genuine, the features may or may not make it to the final version of Windows.

One-two

The purported leaks come a week after another website, MyDigitalLife, posted a similar picture of the Start menu.

Oddly enough, the pictures appear to be in 4:3 aspect ratio and still show the development version of Windows as Windows 8.1 Pro (rather than Windows 9).

The Verge wrote:Microsoft set to unveil Windows 9 on September 30th

Microsoft is planning to unveil its Windows 8 successor next month at a special press event. Sources familiar with Microsoft’s plans tell The Verge that the software maker is tentatively planning its press event for September 30th to detail upcoming changes to Windows as part of a release codenamed "Threshold." This date may change, but the Threshold version of Windows is currently in development and Microsoft plans to release a preview version of what will likely be named Windows 9 to developers on September 30th or shortly afterwards. The date follows recent reports from ZDNet that suggested Microsoft is planning to release a preview version of Windows 9 in late September or early October.

The early technology preview will give developers a first look at the new mini Start Menu in Windows 9, alongside the removal of the Charms bar feature and several UI changes. Microsoft is currently compiling builds of Threshold ready for the preview that include an early version of Cortana, but it’s not clear if this particular feature will be made available as part of the technology preview.

While Threshold is likely to be named Windows 9, it’s unlikely that Microsoft will name its upcoming Windows release at its press event. Instead, Microsoft is said to be planning an overview of key new features of the upcoming operating system, with a technical preview ready for developers and enthusiasts. Microsoft is also building a separate combined version of Windows RT and Windows Phone, and the company may take the time to detail this work during its press event. Either way, Microsoft’s next version of Windows is nearing completion and the company will be ready to talk more about it next month.

I really hope we get minimalist flat icons instead of those hideous aero icons that were introduced with Vista.

Love the clean look of Office 2013

Image

Basically, all I want is...

- Option to switch between classic and modern start menu
- Option to run all modern apps in a desktop window, and all classic apps in full screen
- A single task bar, get rid of that left swipemenu
- Cortana

Deliver these, and I'll be there day 1.

I hate the capital letters in the ribbon in Office 2013. They offend me.

What's a "classic app"? Programs from the old Windows Mobile platform?

I was trying to distinguish between old Windows XP style apps that run in a window, and the modern (mobile apps) that run in metro.

Here's a screenshot of the next Windows (9?)

Image

See how the Outlook app is running on the desktop in a Window? I was wondering whether they'd make traditional apps run in metro (full screen, swipe down to close) on a tablet in Windows 9.

Windows did not have apps before 8, when they started integrating mobile software.

Apps is just another term for programs.

Microsoft, Apple and Google now refer to programs as 'apps'.

Are they really going to start showing off Windows 9 before they have released a decent touchscreen version of Office for Windows 8? Above all else what MS really need is to get all their divisions on the same page.
