I genuinely don't understand where people get their Windows 8 hate from.

This.

I can't think of a single reason not to upgrade, it's better than Windows 7 in every conceivable way, every Windows 8 issue has been fixed.

They took Windows 7 and shat all over it. From a usability standpoint it's abysmal. Off screen swipes to close apps :dread:

Windows 10 Launching This Summer in 190 Countries and 111 Languages - http://blogs.windows.com/bloggingwindow ... languages/

Free Upgrade includes Chinese pirated versions of Windows 7/8, unclear if it applies elsewhere -

Microsoft's generosity continues to grow. Reuters reports that the free upgrade for users on Windows 7 and 8 includes all versions -- genuine or otherwise.

"We are upgrading all qualified PCs, genuine and non-genuine, to Windows 10."

I'm still unsure about upgrading as I suspect there will be compatibility issues with software/hardware that I need in order to actually use my PC.

It will apparently be free to pirates worldwide

Microsoft, from some sort of mirror dimension where everything is backwards wrote:“Anyone with a qualified device can upgrade to Windows 10, including those with pirated copies of Windows,” a Microsoft spokesperson told VentureBeat. “We believe customers over time will realize the value of properly licensing Windows, and we will make it easy for them to move to legitimate copies.”

We further asked to make sure that the announcement means the following is technically possible: During this one-year period after Windows 10’s launch, anyone can pirate Windows 7 or Windows 8.x and then upgrade to Windows 10 for free. “Correct; anyone in the world with a qualified device can upgrade a pirated copy of Windows to Windows 10,” the Microsoft spokesperson confirmed to VentureBeat.

So are MS the good guys now? I don't know what's real anymore.

It kinda makes sense, since the people who pirate Windows probably won't pay for it in the first place, so get 'em in through the door and hope you make money out of them via the Windows Store.

Same principal as to why they're making the upgrade free in the first place, come to think of it.

Very forward-thinking approach from Microsoft there.

Not really that forward thinking, it's a win win situation. MS get a gooseberry fool tonne of beta testers at launch as well as a possible revenue stream through the marketplace and the pirates get a new OS, all they have to deal with are the bugs.

It's a good strategy.

They should just auto-upgrade everyone, you go to bed with Windows 7 and wake up with Windows 10.

It's a fantastic OS and I really can't pick fault in my beta, quite excited for full launch.

How stable is the beta now? Worth upgrading now or still best to wait? I haven't been paying much attention to the releases...

Maybe not automatic (I don't think they could do that anyway because they would have to have user agreements ticked off for legal purposes, seeing as it is technically a new piece of software you'll be installing). I was thinking something along the line of having a window pop up and ask if the user would like to upgrade for free, with a list of all the benefits and with Yes being the default option (hide the no option somewhere obscure to reduce the likelihood people will just click it because they could not be arsed installing the upgrade, there will be people with a legitimate reason for not wanting to upgrade but they will be the more technically minded ones).
