Microsoft has sent me round the houses with an update (1709) I simply cannot install (I'm still using a bog standard laptop for the time being) - what strawberry floating incompetence.

First I partially start downloading it, only to be told there isn't enough space on my internal storage, so I stick it on a USB. It downloads and prepares to install, only to then notify me there isn't enough space. So I free up some more space (about 3.5GB is required, it says). The whole process then appears to start again. Blah, blah, blah...preparing to install again...only to be greeted with another message telling me there again isn't enough space to install (despite having spent all this time actually downloading it) and I require another 1.63GB. Except I can't free up more space, as there's practically nothing left for me to uninstall.

So many things have annoyed me about Windows 10 over the years, and this is just yet another. The fact Windows 10 is sold and promoted by Microsoft themselves on brand new computers that can't run it, that the programing is so bad it can't figure out how much space is on a HDD at the start of the whole process, that it's so difficult to turn off updates telling you how wonderful Skype/Microsoft Edge is whenever you dare use something else...

You should just free up some space.

It's fitted with a 27.8GB SSD, and of that there is realistically only 4GB of inbuilt storage to play with. The rest is taken up by Windows 10, drivers, web browsers, and MS Office.

You could remove Office and use the browser based versions.

Or delete all the partitions on the drive, format and install Windows 10.

Incredibly, removing Office (990MB) and both Chrome (362MB) and Firefox (139MB) wouldn't be enough either.

For some reason the latest Windows 10 update is enormous.

Is it feasible to fit a more adequate SSD?

Yeah it's isn't windows 10s fault you have a ridiculously small SSD. Companies really shouldn't make devices with such crap levels of storage.

Aren't you also meant to always keep something like 10% empty so it's able to work optimally?

This is the point where it’s revealed to be a Sony laptop and then we all act shocked

It's a HP Stream...from the MS Store. Retails for about £200. A proper povo student laptop. The Aldi baked beans of computers.

In which case having Office installs is missing the point of the device.

That device is called a "stream" for a reason, you are meant to install basically nothing and use OneDrive storage with Office online, or Google Drive storage with docs, sheets etc.

It was designed to utilise "the cloud" and show that you can have a cheap device and be productive by "embracing the cloud"

Basically, stop using like it is a proper device and use "the cloud".

Office was already installed on the machine - a year of 365 was one of its main selling points!

Hp stream isn't upgradable. Maybe you could get away with an SD and install to that basically it's gooseberry fool.

Just had a message pop up on the Action Centre saying 'unfortunately this computer cannot be upgraded to the latest version of Windows 10. 8GB required.'

Oh, so NOW you tell me. That feedback. :datass:

It was a temporary measure before I bought a Macbook...but it's just ended up a little less temporary than planned.
