That is the quickest I have ever finished an entire bottle of wine.

I now have two ice cubes floating in Jack Daniel's honey liqueur. Life is good.

This is incredible. I am pretty sure you can pick it up from most supermarkets. If you're stuck for a Christmas present for someone into red wine, be stuck no more!!

:toot:

I am now going to cook steak and drink the entire bottle.

Not the same, I know, but this post and a certain cheese thread has prompted me to go out and get this haul. The perils of living one minute from Sainsbury's. Chin chin - God being a grown up is fun!

strawberry floating hell, Pell. That is incredible.

The vintage is a factor but no matter what year, you will always enjoy a CdP. Godspeed, brother :datass:.

I've never really been one for wine but over the last year or two I have acquired a bit of a taste for dry white wine. Still a total noob mind you, I tend to just stick to Chardonnay.

5 years ago I don't think I'd drank more than a glass of wine in my whole life.

Then I went away with some friends for a weekend city break and shared a bottle of Chianti and that was the first time I thought I could actually quite like this. Later on that year we went away again and spent an afternoon in a wine bar and shared a few bottles with some cheese and olives and that really cemented my liking.

It's got to be red. It goes so well with certain foods, tomato based pasta sauces, tapas, fillet steak, French food. I could never go back to drinking lager with these types of food when eating out.

When I first met my, now wife, she didn't drink red wine. I've now got her enjoying it so much that she spent about £400 on a couple of Waterford Crystal tumblers and a decanter. We christened them with a £55 bottle of Amarone.

Once you get over £20 in price I don't think the increase in price reflects the increase in quality. I find it just gets stronger rather than nicer.

Tesco do lots of good bottles which are usually £10 - £15 at half price. Just bought a few bottles of 2007 Gran Reserva for £8 which should have been £15.

If you are paying less than £5, on the likes of Hardys, Jacobs Creek and Blossom Hill you may as well be drinking vinegar. I read somewhere that after you take out the cost of production, packaging, transport and taxes the cost of the actual grapes used is pennies. Like a lot of things you get what you pay for. Obviously if you've never tried anything more expensive then you won't reallise. But if you do, you will when you go back again. It'll be like drinking Rola Cola all your life then trying Coke.

In terms of what wine to drink with what food I just tend get Spanish with Spanish etc. M&S do a delicious Greek wine which goes really well with Moussaka and Lamb kleftiko.

For someone who is not into wine but would like to try my suggestions to enjoy it would be:

Start with a fruity one. Generally I prefer Italian and Spanish to French but Merlot is a good one to start with.

Decant it and let it breath for a while.

When you come to drink it, take a small mouthful, hold it for a moment and then swallow it slowly. It's the complete opposite to how you drink most other things in terms of quenching your thirst.

If I'd have wrote all this this 5 years ago I'd have given myself a slap!

I like wine, but particularly sparkling wine (Cava, etc) but I find it makes me feel awful later on/the next day. I get headaches and just feel generally crap. Think I might be intolerant, if that's possible.

On another note, has anyone tried Chapel Down? It's a sparkling English wine. Sells for about £30 a bottle, I think, but it's really nice.

Wines have sulfites in them which people say is the cause of headaches. Usually most seem to get it with red wine though, although apparently they use less than white (from a quick search). Someone here went to a wine festival in which they made wine without these sulfites. Apparently they cause less headaches. No idea if that's actually true, but I'll be interested in trying them out.

Was just in Florence this weekend for a day trip so had a fair few Chianti classico. Very tasty, and at 4 euros a glass was good value too. I wanted to get a nice bottle to have over Christmas, but I had too much gooseberry fool to bring back without a bottle of wine. I live in Roma so am sure I can find a nice Chianti as it's just down the road from Tuscany.

I've been drinking more wine than usual since I moved here as it's obviously cheaper for decent stuff. My grandad makes wine. He used to always grow his own grapes and do the process himself, but as he's like....80 odd now he buys the grapes from others. It's rather tasty. Quite sweet, but good. He used to make a great white wine, but the grapes didn't grow as often as the red variety.

Interesting. Thanks. Surely some people- including me, perhaps- must be more re prone than others to he aches though or wine would surely be nowhere near as popular as it is.

I think my uncle and his wife drink organic wine. I wonder if that's because they don't contain sulfites?

A former housemate of mine was a big wine drinker and she had two rules when it came to buying it. 1: It couldn't cost less than a fiver and 2: It couldn't be less than 12% ABV.

This thread is much older than I thought .

Have any more of you ventured into wine since 2015?

I've just opened a Pinot Noir from New Zealand. I'm sat here drinking it on my own and I'm about to start a game of Civilization. Absolute bliss.

Still loving wine, I'm actually considering heading out to the shops now to get a bottle of red, such is my thirst.

edit: I caved - went and got a Tesco Finest Argentinian malbec, sipping it now with Football Manager on the laptop whilst the wife watches Loves Island :P

Enjoying a nice red tonight. We had some beautiful wine at our wedding meal, saved a bottle of the white and had it on our balcony in Vegas at the end of our trip along with some wedding cake :datass:
