This was much funnier when it was Lehman Brothers employees getting strawberry floated over*. :(

*Disclaimer 1 - yeah, I know, Lehman Brothers employed non-rich people too... but it was funny when it happened to the 6-figure-salary brigade.
Disclaimer 2 - this situation isn't actually funny at all, but I can't be bothered to rephrase the sentence

Games and Stuff.

If you can read this, you're too close.

I don't like the way the media are reporting the Woolworths story. They just said an end of an era as two of the UK's biggest names go under. Woolworths hasn't gone under. I'm quite confident that it will be sold onto someone else by the administrators.

I jolly hope so as unemployment is not the fun filled happy time people imagine.

While I don't go into Wooloworths that often, and can't remember when I last bought something from them, I do always think of them as the place to get pick 'n' mix. Guess I'll need to find another place for that. My parents bought my N64 from our local Woolworths too I think. The real shame is that this comes so close to Christmas for the workers.

I'm guessing that Woolworths were hoping that the up turn in sales would have bouyed them over another year. I imagine that some one will buy the brand but there is going to be a lot of pain for the workers. Also Woolworths have been against the wall for years, this is no real surprise to be honest.

Also I'm in the financial s**ter as well although I think I can get out without calling in the administrators.

Sorry to hear about your problems Peter Crisp

Hopefully most Woolworths stores can at least get through the next few weeks, if only for the workers sakes.

I hope so, I'm re-writing my CV at the moment actually. Gonna send it out regardless of what happens.

I think the real headline here is the shoddy writing on the BBC.

Someone who needs sacking wrote:Our business editor says that Woolworths has been something of a lame duck retailer for years, losing market share against intense competition.

"Government policy is not to prop up lame ducks," our business editor said.

You what? Who writes like that?

Peter, do what happens when all business go under. Start a rumour that you're all not getting paid, then walk out with anything of value.

All the people who have posted in this thread saying its a good thing woolies could be going under are strawberry floating selfish idiots. You wouldn't be laughing if it was your job that was on the line.

If Woolworths does go out of business then it's gonna have a knock on effect, Zavvi are supplied by EUK, EUK is owned by Woolworths, so that will be Zavvi strawberry floated unless they can find another supplier. Tesco, Asda, Morrisons and Sainsburys are all supplied by EUK as well, so there goes all your cheap new release games. And yes, I do work for woolies.

We don't really have anything of much value to steal which is a worry in itself.

It is a shame. Feel for you guys who work there.
I'll always remember them as the company that gave me my first job, way back in '99. Christmas Temp. Ah it felt great to be treated like gooseberry fool.

On the other hand I did get several consoles off them. Bought my Gamecube from them back in 2003 I think, then last year I got my PS3 when they did the £400 deal (60Gb System, 2 games, 2 Blu-Rays and an extra pad. 8-) )

They're just another high street retailer loosing out to the supermarkets. The trouble with Woolworth, I think, is that you are never quite sure what they stock - I'd often go in looking for something but find they didn't have it, or I couldn't find it. In the end a toys / kiddy clothes / fairly-selection-of cd/dvd/game and pic-n-mix shop doesn't really cut it anymore. They should have ditched everything else and just become a handy kiddies clothes shop.
