For the longest time I pronounced sporadic 'spor-o-dic.'

Tres embarrasent.

EDIT: Oh, and espresso as 'expresso'

I woman I worked with once couldn't pronounce 'testosterone'

She would say 'teresterosterone'

I only found this out when we were talking about words we had trouble saying, and not for any other reason relating to me or my masculinity.

But we did use to make her say it after that.

Also, someone said 'brolloci', instead of 'broccoli', which is pretty awesome. They knew it was wrong, just couldn't help it.

I pronounce 'th' like 'f'. So 'three' and 'free' are both the same.

Didn't even realise I did it until about a year ago. Now it annoys me but it's too ingrained to change.

Loads of people do that, but it's less a mispronunciation than a misunderstanding of what the word describes. If you couldn't knock back an espresso in two sips nobody would call it expresso.

It's not too late! I didn't figure out how to pronounce 'th' properly 'til I was 20. It took a few months of consciously trying to change how I spoke, but after that it stuck and I started getting it right without thinking about it.

I think this is why I now get them both mixed up with each other. Because I was the same as Drumstick but then I tried to force myself to pronounce the "th". And now I get them mixed up instead.

What worked for me was just calmly correcting myself. Say "...so I'll need free, sorry three, sandwiches, and then...". If you hesitate or show embarrassment people will tease you, but if you just get on with the sentence like it's totally natural then no-one will notice, and I think it helps your brain understand what it's supposed to say (if that makes sense?). Five years on I do still mix them up now and then but it's pretty rare.

Cool, I've learnt how to say it properly but I have to stop and think everytime, it never comes naturally in conversation. I'll keep practicing!

It's not easy for sure, and it was definitely frustrating at times. Gotta try to stay positive! Good luck sorting it out, never actually knew it was so common, so interesting to see others here dealing with it.

See my problem is that I struggle to even hear the difference, almost like a kind of linguistic relativity

Interesting, do any of the "th"/"f" folks here struggle more with it on particular words?

I can see how "three"/"free" might be an easy one to fall foul of, but surely it's not the same with all words that use the "th" sound? I can't say as I've heard anyone using the "f" sound when say words like "the" or "there" etc.
