A Wal-Mart worker died after being trampled when hundreds of shoppers smashed through the doors of a Long Island store Friday morning, police and witnesses said.

The 34-year-old worker, employed as an overnight stock clerk, tried to hold back the unruly crowds just after the Valley Stream store opened at 5 a.m.

Witnesses said the surging throngs of shoppers knocked the man down. He fell and was stepped on. As he gasped for air, shoppers ran over and around him.
CAUGHT ON CAMERA: WAL-MART CROWD MOMENTS BEFORE DEADLY STAMPEDE

"He was bum-rushed by 200 people," said Jimmy Overby, 43, a co-worker. "They took the doors off the hinges. He was trampled and killed in front of me. They took me down too...I literally had to fight people off my back."

The unidentified victim was rushed to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 6:03 a.m., police said.

The cause of death wasn't immediately available pending results of an autopsy.

A 28-year-old pregnant woman was knocked to the floor during the mad rush. She was hospitalized for observation, police said. Early witness accounts that the woman suffered a miscarriage were unfounded, police said.

Three other shoppers suffered minor injuries, cops said.

Wal-Mart spokesman Dave Tovar called the incident a "tragic situation."

"The safety and security of our customers and associates is our top priority," Tovar said, noting that the victim was a temporary maintenance worker.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with them and their families at this difficult time."

Before police shut down the store, eager shoppers streamed past emergency crews as they worked furiously to save the store clerk's life.

"They were working on him, but you could see he was dead, said Halcyon Alexander, 29. "People were still coming through."

Only a few stopped.

"They're savages," said shopper Kimberly Cribbs, 27. "It's sad. It's terrible."

I'm shocked they kept on going, straight past emergency crews.

Where does it come from
And how was it made?
Who died in the process
And who got paid a starvation wage?
Shopcops protect
A terrifying place
Willing to serve you 24 hours a day
Slick etiquettes
A great masquerade
Fluorescent tubes illuminate milelong aisles
Aseptic floors
Colorful shelves: myriads of products, but all their content is the same
Fooled and deceived
Who made us fall for this sham?
Who made us swallow the bait that we need all that gooseberry fool?
Place your blind faith
In every produce
Don't hesitate or enquire, just follow our rules
No one complains
Customer is king
Why would you bother, just enter the pin
Who made us fall
Fall for the myth
That we would be better off with everything at our fingertips?
No one realized
How somewhere along the line
We have surrendered to the great void in our lives
Overwhelmed by the immense selection
Exerted to cover our inanition
Afraid that there's something that we could be missing
We'd pay any price to buy everything
We stand in line and smile....Celebrate the great emptiness of our lives

To think those people are human like the rest of us. Bunch of fools. I'd hate working in those conditions too, you can imagine everyone barging through the doors being an absolute banana split to anyone who got in their way.

And I thought it was bad enough that plenty of people tend to hang around the front of my Tesco like a bunch of zombies on Boxing Day, asking any staff in the garage when the shop is opening.

The place is shut for all of two days over Christmas, and somehow people can't wait. :|

Those crowds are terrifying, there must have been thousands of people in that carpark and there didn't seem to be any measures in place to stop what happened. strawberry floating savages.

Would I be wrong to say it's manslaughter?

I'm not trying to bring this into a mini argument, general curiosity as to counts as manslaughter.

How exactly would you know who did it? Would you convict the entire crowd?

Unless the cameras show someone pushing this guy to ground and then running over him it'd be near impossible to get a manslaughter conviction. If you look at the picture the crowd was just one big sea of people with seemingly no measures in place to try and manage the flow of people. Wal-Mart are probably liable for not providing adequate protection for their staff though.

I think manslaughter requires a person or people knowing their choice of action is risky and dangerous but choosing to do that action anyway which results in an unintentional death.

So no, I don't believe this counts as manslaughter.

http://gizmodo.com/5099896/more-black-friday-bloodshed-2-reported-dead-after-shooting-at-toys-r-us

There aren't a lot of details yet, but news sources are saying that in Palm Desert, California, two people died after a shooting resulting from an altercation between two teenage girls inside a Toys R Us. The shop was inundated with Black Friday shoppers at the time, and when the girls were arguing, it seems, a male teenager began shooting. The boy, a juvenile, was detained, but it is not clear who was killed. Everyone was evacuted from the store. We will update this post as additional information materializes

Cheers for the answers.

They need to sort out this Black Friday crap, three deaths in stores, two because of strawberry floating shootings.
