Working in the States

Hey y'all.

I work for IBM at the moment in the UK, on a 9 month placement. I had a meeting with my manager t'other day and asked him what the chances are of me working in New York for 6-8 weeks. I told him I was willing to sort everything out, regarding visa's, flights and accomodation and he's setting me up with the office in Manhattan.

I was just wondering, does anyone have any experience in applying for work Visa's to the States? Are there any sites that clearly show what you need and what you can't have?

Any help would be great, thanks.

I know nothing about this.

With that in mind, which UK office are you with? Not the Development Labs in Hursley, by any chance?

I found this - http://www.workpermit.com/us/employee.htm - Their office across the pond will probably help out as well

My gf worked in Florida for a year. She had to go to the US Embassy in London to get her work visa.

It might be different if you're only going for a few weeks though.

My friend worked in the US recently for about 4 months, and he had to apply for a visa and pay for a health insurance policy.

Both cost a fair bit, (like a few hundred £) and for the Visa he had to go to london and meet with someone from the states to make sure he wasn't a terrorist or some gooseberry fool!

This may have just been for the work he was doing, you may be different (he worked in a resturant)

Thanks for the help guys. It's still a few months away but I need to do all this stuff myself, my work will only help from a contract side, so it's good to know roughly what channels I need to go through.

KP - I work at Hursley, where we do all our Techy gooseberry fool. If you're interested - and I know this sounds weird - I could potentially arrange for a tour if you want to come all the way down to Winchester.

That's a lovely thought Jango! But, it's not necessary! :D I asked because I've been down there for a couple weeks already on a work experience placement. I was a utility coder in a technical writing team.

I was lucky enough to be on at the right time to experience Scott's Summer Marlarkey -- were you there, perchance? We might have met! EDIT: Ah, no, this was over a year ago, you wouldn't have been there. Shame! :(
