Mauro Icardi, who scored 29 goals in 34 league appearances this season, misses out.

that is bizarre - is, for example, Lanzini better for country than he is for West Ham? :dread:

I rate Lanzini, I reckon Klopp would make him even better. :shifty:

As well as scoring a lot of goals and being one of the best strikers in the world?

I heard on football weekly ( or the totally football show) that the Argentina team and Icardi had a falling out ages ago hence why Icardi is never involved with the National team.

Edit: just looked it up and it’s more hilarious than I thought. The rumour is that because he married the ex wife of Maxi Lopez ( who is close friends with Leo Messi and hates Icardi) he will never be picked for Argentina

With Kane, I am guessing he is just the first name on the team sheet, that said is anyone else 100% playing every game if fit?

What have either of those got to do with being captain?

Not a lot, but as we know by now the captaincy is a load of nothing anyway. I've heard that Kane is a vocal figure in the Spurs dressing room, though, and has demonstrated leadership qualities. As long as he's not on corners or lace-tying duty I don't give a gooseberry fool if he's captain or not.

I agree it doesn't really matter but I'd have thought someone like Henderson would be a better fit.

The more I look at the squad the less optimistic I am about our chances. Such a lack of creativity.

We're not creative enough, we're not positive enough.

It's bad news for the English game.

Nothing in football works as predictably as the England team for this long, which is why I think they might surprise for once. Surely at some point they have to spring a surprise?

Yeah but the surprise will be Tunisia winning 5-0.

Please can we have Kane taking corners as well so that everything - pressure of being our only good player, the captaincy, first choice penalty taker, main source of goals, and corner taker - is on him. :toot:

I can't remember the last time I thought to myself "wow, the captain really made a difference in that game!". Was Beckham captain for the Greece qualifier in 2001?

Struggling to see past Germany winning it again tbh, although Neuer being out all season could be an issue.

I don't fancy Brazil at all, I just don't think Neymar has the character to lead a team to this trophy and ultimately the onus is on him, too much I'd say considering the talent they do have. Would like to see Argentina win, they should get to the semis and from there it requires something we haven't seen from Messi yet. France are good but can anyone actually see them winning this?

I also think Spain are being massively overlooked, particularly considering the form David De Gea is in, if they manage to score the goals they can still dominate the very best.

To be fair he'd get just as much criticism if he said England have no chance of winning it.
