The watershed moment for me was 2014. Messi could have been the player who won the World Cup for Argentina in Brazil. The home of his country’s greatest rivals. Instead he was a passenger for the semi and final. In the biggest games of his international career. He choked.

He doesn’t need to win the World Cup bit he does need to turn up for one.

He hasn’t.
That’s why he gets the criticism and that’s why - at this level - he isn’t on a par with Maradona, Pele, Zidane et al.
At this World Cup - he cetainly isn’t on a par with Ronaldo.

He got Argentina to this world cup and got them to the final of the last one but fairy nuff.
