Tunisia - so very nearly typical performance and result but last minute goal meant it wasnt

Panama - not typical as battered a crap team for a change.

Belgium - didn't matter.

Columbia - typical last minute equaliser but definetly not typical shoot out.

Sweden - comfortable QF win. Not typical

Croatia - take the lead in the first half and look comfortable. Not typical.

Second half - TYPICAL!

Everyone knows the only tournament which matters if the Uefa Nations League, in which we will play Croatia again.

I agree with Gary. Must be something up with Kane as during the only England games I actually watched, this and Sweden, he just wasn't doing much.

This.

Can we not petition someone to ban ITV from showing England games?

It was a good World Cup.

But obviously we’d be disappointing as we probably won’t get a better chance for a while to get to the final. Croatia are a decent team but they not a international giant like Brazil, France or Germany. Going out to those teams we been used to it.

I am by no means an expert, but from my observation every England game I watched this year they always seemed the more robotic side, technically very good but often lacking the raw instinct to take advantage of opportunities on the fly the same way other great teams do. This is why they rely so much on set pieces to score and cannot find the net in free play. Maybe that is because the current squad is so young and don't have a great intuition yet, I don't know.

I think Spurs rushed Kane back too quickly from his injury late on in the season, he's been poor since then...

My criticism of the squad selection was always the amount of defenders and lack of defenders. I still don't understand why Cahill and Jones were there when he could have had Wilshere, Shelvy even Drinkwater who might have been able to create something.

If he was carrying an injury he shouldn’t have been playing - that’s terrible management and a complete lack of trust in the likes of Vardy, and also a complete lack of a plan B from the management.

It’s too early and we don’t have enough knowledge to criticise yet but if any player has started over another one while carrying a significant injury, that’s atrocious.

Yeah that’s not a bad assessment.

Think Alli was given too much game time in the tournament in general. It’s difficult to have a pop at Southatgate’s faith in selecting the same team given how far we got, but I don’t remember him being much more than a passenger for the whole tournament (goal aside). At least Lingard looked like he was capable of finding a pass or beating a player at times, Alli seemed to preoccupied with appealing for fouls every time he lost the ball.

Drinkwater isn’t getting in any squads. He refused to join the squad for a friendly.

It wasn't really though, was it? I mean, it wasn't, really.

It was disappointing, gutting, a little sloppy at times. Even despite not being a great team ourselves, we had it well within our capabilities to see the game out at 1-0.

But it wasn't pathetic.

One shot on goal in 120 minutes is pretty pathetic, in my view. When you’ve got 20 and 30 goal a season EPL strikers against Dejan Lovren and a keeper with a dodgy hamstring, you need to be doing a hell of a lot better than that.

Surely it's at least two? The goal and Stones' header off the line?

Absolutely gutted but England didn't play well most of the night, although the ref was really poor.

It's even more of a shame because this feels like the last proper World Cup. The next one is ridiculous and taking place in the winter and the one after that will have 48 teams and resumably a really weird group stage.

In the predictor league at work I went for France beating Croatia in the final right at the start of the tournament. I think it would win me about £50 if that came in. Massive and quite amazing achievement by Croatia too. Has any team played 360 minutes in knockout ties to reach a final before?

I dunno, stat popped up after about 117 minutes and I don’t think they had another shot after that.

The state of Bilic.

Of course, we weren't creative enough, no-one is going to argue against that. But we weren't pathetic. We were threatening and our pace did worry them, just we couldn't finish these attacks off into something clinical. Our one shot was arguably the most clear-cut in the entire game. Had Kane scored (he should have), we might have seen the game out with one shot. Would it still have been pathetic then, to only have one shot in 90 minutes?

Pathetic is conspiring to give away an easy victory, of not giving enough effort, of horrendous mistakes, of not caring enough etc. Being sloppy in attack at times is not pathetic. Croatia aren't mugs, and back in the group stage many were tipping them as dark horses. Lovren is capable of playing well, he was part of the Liverpool side who got to the CL final. It's not pathetic to get knocked out by a side who have him in their defense or a keeper who had a slight niggle in the last game. It's ridiculous to think so, in my eyes, and merely reactive to the scoreline and defeat.

No-one's happy about how we struggle to score in open play, least of all me. This isn't breaking news though and has been going out throughout the tournament, so I'm not sure what's so pathetic about it now we have been beaten by a team that is, probably, a little better than us.

We were also 22 minutes away from actually seeing the game out. Whether we would have or not is moot, but we were fairly comfortable first half.

At least Giggs has put in the effort to get dressed for the occasion.
