Would you pay for a next gen patch for current games?

Anything to do with games at all.

Updates or remasters? They are different, very different in fact.

I mean an update as in "updated visuals", a newer iteration, which a remaster also is. Contemporary aesthetics and changes in attitudes towards what looks good, particularly for example changes in lighting engines that eradicate prebaked effects or aren't recreated the same can spoil the look of a previous game.

Well in the world of PS4 Pro and Xbox One X's the upscaled games receive usually a resolution increase and nothing else, a few have faster frame rates (Witcher 3 is a joy to play) but remasters are made as you said by different teams. I liked Bioshock remasters but the sound issues are odd, still, Bioshock 2's visuals are jaw dropping as the details missed in original are crips and clear in remaster, again, it was as gorgeous on PC.

I watched an hour of footage of Alan Wake on PC the other day, I mean it's great on Xbox BC but good lord its gorgeous on PC. I'd love a remaster.

I didn't think this deserved a new topic so decided to resurrect this instead.

They seem to think next gen will be Christmas 2019.

Personally I would be unlikely to pay to play the game again as I have enough of a backlog list as it is.

However, I think if the developer is having to complete additional work (wages, overheads etc) to produce the upgrade and this is beyond the original remit of the game then yes, they should be entitled to charge something for it.

2019 seems early if they want to go digital only, which I believe is what both Sony and Microsoft will be aiming for with their next machine.

I don't see any prospect of a download only console.
The UK has a pretty decent infrastructure overall but there are still millions of people for whom the prospect of a 100GB download for a game would be pretty laughable as that would take days of pretty solid downloading.
Lets say I buy a PS5 with 2 games that's possibly 200GB of downloading just to play game 2. I can easily see that taking the best part of a week for some and that's assuming games on next gen are the same size they are now they may get bigger due to the upgraded graphics and better physics due to better CPU's in the new consoles.

It depends on how much of the market they are willing to cutoff by going download only but I'm fairly certain it's going to happen next time around.

I think the best option would be to have 2 versions of next gen. One with a Blue Ray drive and one without.
I'd buy the machine with a drive simply because I rent games with Boomerang.

No

If PS5 and Xbox Two are based on X86 architecture then I expect them to be backwards compatible as standard.

All the PS4/Xboxone content tied to your PSN/Xbox Live account will work just fine on PS5/Xboxtwo.
They might even play PS4/Xboxone discs. There won't be PS5/Xboxtwo discs though.
