PostWSJ Rumour - Nintendo to release new upgraded Switch model in 2019

We all knew it would happen but WSJ are reporting that a new version of Nintendo Switch is due to launch in the second half of 2019

https://www.resetera.com/threads/new-switch-model-coming-in-second-half-of-2019-reports-japanese-wsj.72679/

Thoughts? I will be in for a new more powerful model as long as devs utilise any extra power well

Well, this completely kills any temptation I currently had to buy a switch.

It seems unclear what this might actually be and it's still really just a rumour.

This is still a rumour and any new switch is likely going to be a "mini" or cheaper version, probably without detachable joycons and a smaller screen for kids.

I'm expecting 2 new Switches at some point

Switch Pro - runs all games at 1080p in docked/handheld mode

Switch Pocket - 3DS form factor, incompatible with dock and certain games like Mario Party.

This wouldnt surprise me, its also a reasonable idea, they need an answer to the 3ds and this method would provide it.

I think this will be a Switch Pro, like the New Nintendo 3DS for instance. Reason being is that the next gen consoles are expected to launch in 2020 so a Switch Pro coming before them that runs 3rd Party ports better could entice more gamers to pick one up.

I would expect a more kid friendly Switch to launch later in the lifecycle, like 2DS did

It would be absolutely pointless to release a new Switch that wasn't backwards compatible with existing games. Madness.

Likewise I can't see Nintendo caring much another going for 1080p in handheld and docked. People here might have an interest in that but you stick that claim on the box or TV ad and you'll just be greeted with shrugs.

It's more likely there'll change the size of it to make it a bit smaller or maybe increase the battery life and on-board storage.

No one's suggesting that.

Yeah this being an increment in the same gen it would be compatible. It will be the switch 2 that will require you rebuy everything as it is ported over for year 1.

MS and Sony have done it, so it's certainly feasible that Nintendo will release an upgraded model.

Nintendo always try to be different though, this could be something else.

I always have that tinge of irrational panic when you see stuff like this, not wanting my console to become obsolete; not being happy that it's not the best version.

Then I remember how little I've noticed not having a PS4 Pro, and I'm fine again.

I'm not sure this will be as big a revision as some are suggesting. The source there only talks about a better screen and more battery life. That sounds a lot more like the PSP or New 3DS approach to revisions with a collection of small optimisations rather than breaking a fundamental part of the Switch's design by making it portable only and dropping joycons for example.

If we assume a matching form factor to maintain joycon compatibility, that still allows for better battery life, a bigger and higher quality screen (with less bezel), better performance ("docked" performance while undocked is a reasonable shout), and potentially even the dock's chip being built in to the console to allow for dockless TV play.

A 2DS style revision that drops functionality I can see being a revision past this one, possibly along with a home console only version too.

Sounds like the jump from PSVR v1 to PSVR v2. Not fussed, I'm happy with my v1 Switch.

WSJ Rumour - Sun to rise tomorrow.

It's pretty much a certainty that this will happen, and that it will happen next year when the original Switch is 2 years old. The GBA SP came out 2 years after the GBA, the DS Lite came out 2 years after the DS, the 3DS XL came out 2 years after the 3DS.

The WSJ is hardly at Nostradamus levels of prophecy here!

I think that "console upgrades" have now become a fact of life. Manufacturers are taking their lead from the mobile and TV markets, discovering that some folk will buy new kit for even the mildest of upgrades.

I'm a little surprised about rumours of a thinner system / screen... you'd still need the joy-con to be their current size for them to be comfortable to hold, so why have a thinner screen in the middle?

Personally my main design desire would be for much better battery (charge) life. The Lynx and Game Gear used to get so much stick about a battery life of three hours... nowdays we're like "that's okay!". The capability to talk to other players through a headset rather than via a separate mobile app would be a decent development area, too.

I'd like Nintendo to spend time and money enhancing the system software side of the Switch... to make it more Nintendo-y. Themes, friends comms, channels... these all existed on previous Nintendo systems and the Switch feels barebones in comparison. Heck, how can you have a start-up jingle / click that only plays the first time you ever power up the console?!?

You get that click whenever you attach/ detach the joycon from the switch!

But... the first time you ever power up the console, that sequence plays where the Switch logo appears on a Nintendo-red background and the click sound plays. It's quite nice... and still appears at the start of every Nintendo video. However, the console just shows a dull white-logo-on-black-screen with no sound!

And I barely ever detach the joy-con from the console :-).

Absolutely it would have been a better startup. A curious decision on their part.

I haven't docked my Switch for about 4 months  I just have the power cable plugged in next to my bedside table, so the Switch charges overnight.

Handheld mode master race :datass:
