WSJ Rumour - Nintendo to release new upgraded Switch model in 2019

If this does happen I can see it just being either a revision (like the DS Lite was to the DS) or a cheaper version without the dock and the joycons are permanently attached.

However if it was a more powerful version I hope they keep supporting the standard Switch alongside it, I bought a New 3DS and the only exclusive game I can recall was Xenoblade Chronicles 1. If it is more powerful I can see it being limited to docked play only as well, or the Switch will discharge unbelievably quick (unless they manage to magically pack a load more batteries into it).

Personally I'd like them to keep the power levels the same all the way through the Switch's lifespan and just release a more powerful Switch in a few years with whatever the latest chip from Nvidia is.

If it’s more powerful I very much doubt it will have exclusive games, I would expect games to run better on it but it will be the Switch equivalent of a PS4 Pro/XBone X

I'm going in expecting a Switch SP/Lite situation. I think it's too soon to expect anything more powerful. Better screen, better battery life and just overall quality tweaks would be nice. Not sure if it's already been mentioned but it's worth noting the Switch having already been hacked probably plays a part in this updated model too.

That's a good point re the Switch being hacked, maybe a minor hardware change (processor wise) to make it harder going forward.

I'm not arsed about handheld gaming, so as unlikely as it is, I'd really like Nintendo to release a screenless version that's intended only for home use i.e. connecting to a TV. Hopefully, this could be significantly cheaper. At the moment it's just too expensive for me to justify paying for functionality that I'm not going to utilise.

Obviously, it makes the Switch name a little bit redundant, but if Nintendo can go from a 3DS to 2DS, which is a situation where the USP of the original product was removed to produce a similar but functionality-reduced version of itself, then I don't see why they couldn't do it here.

I think you hold the power button down for a few seconds and then you get an option to do a power off.

I don't think I've ever used it myself!

If you hold down the console power button for a few seconda, a menu pops up and you can select a full power down.

But, to keep things exciting, it only seems to work sometimes. Occasionally it powers right off but sometimes I pop it back into the Dock and I can see it power on again. It's weird.

I would of thought it's inevitable that there's a new model of Switch as I thought I read it had been cracked by hackerz and the only way to stop cheating online and general hijinx was a change in the physical hardware because it couldn't be patched out?

If this is the case Nintendo now are probably trying to find reasons to make people upgrade but not alienate original customers if they don't [all the while patching the hacks in the original machine].

Surely in the UK the correct form is to use a cricket bat?
We don't want the machines to become culturally confused as that would be just awful.

Xbone = American = baseball bat

PS4/Switch = Japanese = Samurai sword

Spectrum/Amstrad = British = cricket bat

CDi = Dutch = fierljeppen pole

Glad to hear these rumours are coming out already, it’s what I’ve been holding out for. I wanted to get a Switch at launch, but having been badly burnt by the WiiU I was just about sick to the back teeth of Nintendo’s gooseberry fool so was not ready to invest in a console that looked as though it was too expensive and gimped out of the box.

I don’t care about any graphical improvements (not that I think it’s at all likely) so, as others have already said, if they fix the storage and battery life problems I’ll almost certainly jump on board. If they drop the price to £300 with a game or a controller that’s actually useable, I’m there day one.

For a thin device the only way to include a bigger battery is generally a thinner screen assembly. It's actually three parts, led, lcd and digitiser so make one of those thinner and you can fit more battery. This it the reason phones aren't getting any thinner.
