Postwtf is going on with firefox?
by Ironhide » Sat Oct 31, 2009 2:51 pm

I just started up firefox to discover my homepage had been changed to www.alot.com and I had some sort of toolbar installed, I have no idea where it came from so uninstalled it straight away.

I've checked last nights browser history and found a few pages I know haven't visited (mostly things like alot entertainment and alot videos) but no-one else has used my PC.

Thats an adware virus thing.

Install Spybot Search and Destroy. Close the browser and run Spybot and your normal virus scanner. Select the deepest scan available.

If it doesnt disappear after that, It may be a bit harder to scrub off.

Have you installed any new software recently? Or been to a dubious website or followed a link that lead to a blank page?

Update/re-install/disable/rollback Java. Java causes me the most crashes in Firefox.. if not Flash. It's rarely actually Firefox that causes it but those plug-ins.. a bit like Windows and drivers.

Whenever I get adware or spyware......I just do a full format  I've been doing this since the Vista days, since it lobs everything into the Windows.old folder and I don't really lose any data.

I keep Windows on a separate partition and just reformat with a lightweight XP that installs in about 15 minutes, then install all my favourite apps with a single installer, Ninite.

GG how would I go about installing this lightweight version of Windows?

I can supply information about current partitions if you need them.

You need to download it and install like how is described in that other reformating topic.

Use EASEUS partition manager to create a partition for it.
