PostX-Box wireless adaptor problems (laggy)
by Gandalf » Thu Oct 29, 2009 10:49 am

Guys,

I've recently moved my 360 from downstairs backroom (I ran a network cable into the back of the router) to upstairs back bedroom and have bought the 360 wireless adaptor (official Microsoft one) but problems have started. It took over three hours to run two updates and now I find on-line play, particularly CoD4, unplayable due to lag. I've checked the strength of the signal (three green bars out of four, upstairs) so that should not be an issue. I brought the console back downstairs earlier and connected it up to where I used to use it (I had four out of four bars) but it was still completely laggy. I rang Rubix to see if he was having any issues (with local area) but there isn't anything wrong. My broadband speed is 100.0 mbps so it isn't that.

Am I missing anything? Any tips would really be apprieciated.

Thank you.

Like I said I can't really understand the problem you are having, your connection sounds ok and your speed showing on your pc seems fast enough. The only thing I can think of is maybe your wireless router isn’t great because your PC is connected directly to your router (if I remember correctly) which is why your PC is running quicker.

Hopefully one of the other guys can suggest something I am not thinking.

I would recommend an external hard drive.

Seriously though sounds like the wireless adapter is broken. Have you bought it recently (if so get a replacement and try that) or has it worked ok in the past?

I was originally going to say gooseberry fool on its tits….

If your internet is fine then it can only be the router. Try plugging the Ethernet cable back in and see if it runs smoothly then (just to be sure) and then send it back.

Of course I really don’t know what I am talking about so you might want to wait for somebody who does. ;)

But it could be the wireless signal, sure its reading as strong but that doesnt mean its quick!

It might be worth trying a new cable but there is a lot of hassle sending it back and waiting for a new one

It must be something to do with the signal, I used to stick the network cable directly into the back of the router, I had a strong signal and was regularly picked my machine to host a game as it was the strongest signal.

So basically were saying the adaptor is strawberry floated and I need to send it back?!

You broadband speed isn't 100mbs is it? or is that the maximum your wireless router can transmit?

It is possible in ragards to COD 4 it was a host issue, have you tried other games?

I was surpised it was that high. Mine averages 10-12mbs. Is there a way to check on your console?

This is going to sound slighty odd but is your 360 in a cabinet of some sort? I've recently had problems with lag but moving it out of the cabinet has sorted it.

Clicking on the 'Local Area Connection Status' tab (bottom right of screen) tells me the speed of the connection and that it's 100.0mbps.

The make of the router is Netgear WGR614, came with the cable package.

As regards to the cabinet question, it's by the side of a bedside drawers. My only concern is that it's next to the airing cupboard, the water heater wouldn't cause that much difference, surely? Saying that I took the console downstairs where it was originally connected (which is about 12 foot away from the router and I still had lag????

To get your speed try;

http://www.speedtest.net/

Wait for the begin test animation to load up and click that rather than the advert. Try a few test locations - UK, Europe, perhaps USA and you'll get upload, download and ping speeds.

Do you have a laptop you can do the same test wirelessly from the same room?

Lag on COD is usually due to having a high ping, on a bad day my ping is about 100ms which is far too high. It should be alot lower maybe about 10-20ms.

Nice one.

Tested it a few times (Brum, London and Paris) ping ranged from 10-26, Download is around 9.85mb/s.

So that's not bad is it??! :?

This is what I was on about when I called you about NAT settings, it should be open for a better connection

http://forum1.netgear.com/showthread.php?t=36409

the solution to your problem is pretty simple, just log into your router's web configuration and go to WAN Setup under Advance and set the NAT Filtering to Open, and you would have no more problems with XBox Live.
