‘The X-Files’ Revival: David Duchovny & Gillian Anderson to Reprise Roles on Fox

“The X-Files” gang is getting back together for a six-episode limited series that has formally been given a series order by Fox.

David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson will be back as FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully. Series creator Chris Carter will be at the helm for 20th Century Fox TV and Ten Thirteen Productions. Production is set to begin this summer although Fox has not yet set an air date

“I think of it as a 13-year commercial break,” Carter said. “The good news is the world has only gotten that much stranger, a perfect time to tell these six stories.”

The “X-Files” revival follows last spring’s return of “24,” as a 13-episode limited series. NBC has joined the mania for resurrecting series with built-in audience awareness with its plans for the “Heroes Reborn” miniseries next season.

“X-Files” is a natural, as the show about FBI sleuths investigating instances of paranormal activity is tailor-made for social media obsession — even if it hails from an earlier TV era. “X-Files” had a nine-season run on Fox from 1993-2002. It spawned two feature films, 1998’s “The X-Files: Fight the Future” and 2008’s “The X-Files: I Want to Believe.”

Fox Television Group chairmen Gary Newman and Dana Walden shepherded the show on the studio side during its network run. The pair have made no secret of their interest in bringing it back. The new episodes may well spark renewed interest in the show from SVOD platforms, just as the “24: Die Another Day” episodes spurred Fox to cut a rich pact for the entire series library with Amazon Prime.

Earlier this year, Newman and Walden confirmed early plans for “The X-Files” revival at the Television Critics Assn. press tour.

Now official, the duo commented: “We had the privilege of working with Chris on all nine seasons of ‘The X-Files’ — one of the most rewarding creative experiences of our careers — and we couldn’t be more excited to explore that incredible world with him again.”

They added, “‘The X-Files’ was not only a seminal show for both the studio and the network, it was a worldwide phenomenon that shaped pop culture — yet remained a true gem for the legions of fans who embraced it from the beginning. Few shows on television have drawn such dedicated fans as ‘The X-Files’ and we’re ecstatic to give them the next thrilling chapter of Mulder and Scully they’ve been waiting for.”

Fox Confirms ‘X-Files’ Reboot Talks

Following the success of Fox’s 24 limited series, the network is looking to bring back another iconic drama series, The X-Files. Fox TV Group chairman Gary Newman today confirmed chatter that the network is in talks for a new installment of Chris Carter’s cult supernatural drama, which starred David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson. Newman went on to say he was “hopeful” about the outcome. Carter hinted at a possible reboot in the summer, acknowledging he had had conversations with Fox and 20th Century Fox TV, the studio behind X-Files. The series already spawned a movie franchise, and there also has been a fan campaign to extend that franchise with another movie.

http://deadline.com/2015/01/x-files-reb ... 201352465/

After the panel, when Newman spoke with reporters, I asked him what the progress was of a potential series, and who would actually be attached. “What I can say is that if this happens, it’ll be with David [Duchovny (Mulder)] and Gillian [Anderson (Scully)] reprising their roles,” Newman said. “[X-FILES creator] Chris [Carter] is interest, both David and Gillian are interested. Scheduling is very difficult. David has his show, Gillian is doing something in the UK. I really don’t know how fast it can happen, but there are ongoing conversation happening.”

Part of me says :datass: but the other part says :dread:.

A series would definitely be better than a movie - but will they ever address the whole 2012 invasion thingy?

'Oh yeah, we were totally wrong on that.'

Alternatively...

'Yeah that was total carnage... lol.'

It happened and we won, but everyone got amnesia and assumed there was a huge storm instead.

Jupiter is in your sun sign this week, making it pretty crowded in there, what with Jupiter being the largest of the planets and all.

I was going to say they should leave it alone, but then I saw that Mulder and Scully will be in it and so I'm all for it!

Get Vince Gilligan to write a few more episodes and it'll be a sure winner.

I watched the old show a few months back. Man, Mulder is such an irritating dick these days.

I'd rather have a Californication series about an X-Files Reboot with Hank Moody writing / playing Fox Mulder.

Is this a first reboot ever for having the same actors for the main roles?!?

Gillian Anderson is still awesome and sexy as she was. She was excellent in Hannibal.

Can it be called a reboot if it's the same cast and continuing the story line?

Plot twist - Everything after that episode in season six where Mulder and Scully were trapped by a hallucinogenic fungus was actually still part of the fungus trip and never actually happened. They wake up, the last three seasons never happened, retcon and reboot from there.

Maybe they'll have Scully Jnr as their child mascot.

I've always been semi-interested in the X-Files. Is it something I should go out of my way to watch? What should my expectations be?

When its great its outstanding (season 3-5 at its peak) but it meanders about before falling off a cliff in its final seasons.

Same as me. Although I was too scared to watch it when I was young (lol) and I never went back to watch it. I've seen the odd episode here and there, but not all of it.

Season 1 is alright.
Season 2 is ace.
Season 3 - 5 is some of the most consistently well delivered sci/fi horror ever put to screen.
Season 6 is pretty good, but the mytharc episodes are starting to get nonsensical.
Season 7 is where even the monster of the week episodes becomes patchy (some are still good though).
Seasons 8+9 is where the cast gets a bit epileptic and no one can seem to agree on who is meant to be the sceptic that week. Even the story ideas that would have been golden episodes in an earlier season are wasted. Avoid.
