PostIs it worth getting a 3DS at the moment?
by Alkaline » Tue Mar 13, 2012 6:54 am

Aloha,

It's my birthday next week and the missus has told me she's planning on getting me a 3DS. This is excited me greatly but I thought I'd do a bit of research before she splashes out. So I've been reading about this second analogue business and I don't like the sound of it, not one bit. I'm guessing more and more games are going to be needing it so I'm just worried that I'm going to get a shiny new object in the palm of my hands and then at E3 Nintendo are going to unveil a brand new model. I've seen the little accessory with the second analogue they're bringing out that attaches to the side, it looks strawberry floating hideous but is everyone just planning on getting that? Should I stop worrying and just enjoy a free 3DS?

HELP ME

There might be a new 3DS with a second slide pad at some point...but on the other hand there might not. So far not many games use it.

Other than being difficult to carry around with you the addon actually isn't that bad, its comfortable to hold and use just quite big.

Is it worth getting a 3DS now? I'd say so. But that doesn't mean there won't be a better model out at some point.

Alrighty thanks. To be honest I was swaying towards getting it, there's plenty of games out I want and I've just seen that the slide pad thing is quite cheap so there's no problem really.

Is the 3D video recorder software update out? Is it any good? Really haven't been following the 3DS much.

There are some good deals around - I just bought the white 3DS/Super Mario Land 3D bundle.

You'll get the video recorder with a system update. It's OK. The camera's a lot better than I expected, but I'm yet to be convinced I'll ever use it.

So far this year, I have eaten NO mince pies.

Having briefly sampled both, I would have to agree with Dblock. No idea if they are comparable price-wise, but there ya go.

I have both. 3DS is not much for me since I don't like the mario series .

Ps vita on the hand is right up alley . Nice graphics . Games that i can relate to and just a cool tech overall.

I asked someone on here and they replied saying that at the moment the 3DS is pretty much:

Also I didn't like the look of the 3DS much when it came out and you can bet the next revision will make this look ugly as sin.

If you don't like Nintendo's first party output and you have and extra 120 quid burning a hole in your pocket then clearly Vita is the way to go.

I'm pleased with mine and I've got some real treats on the gaming horizon.

I don't think the Nintendo FP output is the problem.

It's everything else.

I agree with everything you're saying, but for me personally there's enough FP output to keep me entertained for a very long time, besides which I also have an iPod Touch, a PS3 and an Xbox 360 to support.

Bottom line - I think the 3DS is cheap and it already has some great games with some great looking games coming out this year. When the Vita is cheap(er) and has some games I really want I'll buy one of those too. As yet it has no system seller (GTA would be good).

I'd recommend getting one just now, there's plenty of good bundle offers going about (that Amazon one the other week was crazy). It's got a great selection of games, as well as plenty of releases to look forward to. The circle pad pro is only compatible with two games (three when Kid Icarus comes out in a few weeks) but is by no means necessary to play the games.

I'd say the 3DS is a safer investment than the Vita at this point. The 3DS has some really good games coming this year, the Vita is very much an unknown quantity at this point. It has some really good games already, but there isn't much announced beyond Sony's first party games.

I hope games like Bioshock, Assassin's Creed and COD are good though. But those three are the main third party games on the horizon beyond ports of existing games.

Plus the Virtual Console on 3DS is pretty good.

It's well worth picking one up now. The last 12 months - not so much.

Thanks for all the help people. If I put a hundred and odd of my own money towards it I could go for the vita but it doesn't really interest me at the moment. We were going to go shopping for it in Manchester on Saturday but I'd probably get a better deal online wouldn't I?

Are DS games compatible with it?

I'm getting rather moist with excitement now.

Yup, all of them. DSi games have region locked functions, but there wasn't really many DSi only games and since if you got them you would get them from the same region (probably), you'll have no problems.

Put it this way: the 3DS has more games worth playing on it right now and has an epic looking 2012 coming up.

If you want a good Mario Kart game, a fantastic Mario Land game, and haven't played/feel like replaying Ocarina of Time, then absolutely. If none of those things appeal to you, look elsewhere.
