It was a poor conference. I just wanted to see an old game 'enhanced' to see how it's going to impact my library of games - a side-by-side if you will.

I've gone off PC gaming but one of the draws was sticking in your old game into a new rig and getting a new experience... I want to see how this will work on the One X but I guess they have to walk a fine line between showing it off and not making their existing audience fell excluded.

Gamescom is all about games coming in the next 3 months, shouldn't get excited.

Okay, so it has a neat wrapping and a 1 Tb drive, but when you can get a standard Minecraft console pack with a 500 Gb drive for £221... this new price point seems ridiculous. You're only fifty quid away from an Xbox OX  .

I guess the problem is that most people won't be watching the event in 4K, so wouldn't see the improvement. You don't want to give the impression that the enhancements aren't worthwhile.

The price is absurd, you can buy a new XBO S at full price for £220. The Minecraft edition is essentially a painted variant. £80 more would be pushing the upper limit of what I expect you would have to pay for it. £180 is incomprehensible - especially as it puts it in the Xbox OX One price range. I was just going to type that I think it must be a pricing error by Amazon but it really is £399.99 as it's listed on MS's site. http://www.xbox.com/en-gb/xbox-one/cons ... b-redstone

What was that (show?), expected something to sell the X with how the games run on that over S.

The one shinning light, I'm now interested in cuphead.

The pricing of the Minecraft console is just plain stupid. That's completely missing what I perceived to be the target audience, i.e. parents.

Why would you pay £350 for a console that's worth around £200, and probably could be picked up for about £180 at Christmas.

Argos and Sainsbury's make sense (a new Cars game is already exclusive to Argos), but the pricing is batshit crazy. It's now a console for the hardcore collector.

I think the machine itself looks great but making it more expensive than a normal S is sheer madness and completely gouging the fans.
At regular S prices I'd say it was one of the best special editions ever but this is just gooseberry fool.

Microsoft's final sales pitch for Xbox One X falls flat

...It was hard to make head or tail of what Microsoft's Gamescom show had set out to achieve. In an hour and a half of reheated E3 trailers and recaps, there was perhaps one announcement of a genuine exclusive for Xbox: a vertical console stand for the day one edition of the Xbox One X, as unpackaged by Major Nelson in an abandoned office on the other side of the world.

It all brought up the same question that kept recurring again and again - who is this thing for, and what's Microsoft setting out to achieve with the Xbox One X? Its mantra, repeated ad infinitum in official material, is that this is The World's Most Powerful Console, and of that there's little doubt. It's the world's most handsome, too, a beautifully designed and improbably minuscule slab of technology that'd sit proudly under any television set, but while Microsoft's engineers have hit it out of the park, there's the nagging feeling that elsewhere in Redmond things aren't running quite so smoothly.
...At this point in the console lifecycle, Microsoft needs more than prettier versions of multiplatform games if it's to make serious inroads into Sony's considerable lead this generation.

It needs new and exciting games, and just one reason to make the Xbox One X essential - an Uncharted, or a Breath of the Wild, to make the console's case for it. Forza Motorsport 7, as fine as it looks, doesn't quite cut it - alongside Gears of War and Halo, it feels like yesterday's news, and not the shot in the arm that's needed right now.

Have to agree, much in the same way as the PS4 Pro, very little to be forking over for with a wad of cash.

I'm wary of discounting the OX at this early stage. It's interesting that the link you used, Floex, has subsequently been updated by Eurogamer and I'm wondering if they have amended their story since it was first published.

The text quoted above doesn't really give the whole flavour of the article. For example, they also state:

Eurogamer wrote:... You could argue that the PlayStation 4 Pro didn't have its own big showcase game, but given Sony's momentum and success so far this generation, it didn't really need one.

Maybe the small victories will be enough, and there are a fair few that Microsoft can claim. Cuphead looks as astounding as ever, and the early months of 2018 look relatively packed with Ori, Crackdown, Sea of Thieves and State of Decay all flying the flag. There's something appetising about Xbox being the underdog once more, and with Sony resurrecting its villain role from the PS3 days with such moves as its blocking of cross-platform play, it's hard not to root for Microsoft as it stages its own revival. Given how the Xbox One X has already sold out its initial allocation on Amazon UK, maybe they'll all prove to be enough.

I cannot be certain but, from my memory of reading the articles earlier today, I don't believe it mentioned the part about the console already being sold out at Amazon.

There is no question that the OX has stolen the PS4 and PS4 Pro's claim of being "the world's most powerful console"... I wonder if that will be enough to entice the more hardcore PS4 gamers to take a look at it?

My kids would absolutely love one, but they'll have to make do with the less ludicrously priced 500Gb version.

I just got the Switch version of Minecraft so a One S is the best (or cheapest) option for cross platform play.

So far this year, I have eaten NO mince pies.

Just read that article and it's hard to disagree.

So MS have a powerful console. No, the most powerful console to date. Whoop-de-fucking-do. Means nothing without the games to back it up - and on that front PS4/Pro utterly destroys Xbox for range and diversity. And if you have a gaming PC, what's the point in investing in an X1X?

As one commentator below the article says:
Anyone expecting an Horizon, Death Stranding or Zelda: Breath of the Wild from MS are living in a dream world, especially now they're obsessed with games as a service.

Microsoft are so fixated on the power debate of 2012/13 they've totally ignored how the gaming landscape has changed, we're midgen, people want gaming diversity, uniqueness (software and concept with the Switch) and excitement, not higher resolution big budget games.

Still, at least you get a stand to put it on...

I don't recall any real mention of OG xbox game stuff apart from a sentence in passing from the denster-looking guy.

Is there a live showcase today at 8pm BST or is the programme a recorded show?

4K ain't gooseberry fool if you don't have the games. What they're bragging about that has 4k - Witcher 3 or whatever - doesn't mean gooseberry fool. Play Tomb Raider 2 in 4k! It's, like, 2 years old.
Games or bust, and they're still failing.

Looking forward, I would say (in my book) that both platforms are fairly even with their "CONSOLE EXCLUSIVES" - read with a deep American accent. I'm looking forward to Death Stranding, Spider-Man and The Last of Us II on PS, but equally I'm excited about Sea of Thieves, Crackdown and PUBG.

MS have just been too quiet for 2016 and 2017 and PS have been able to amass an impressive collection of exclusives. Maybe they were hoping for Recore and Quantum Break to make more of an impact and that's perhaps why they're pushing these again now. MS are making all the right moves for me at the moment however the move of Crackdown to spring is a big loss.

PUBG is just a timed exclusive.

I didn't know that. That's a shame as it's clearly quite a big draw given the buzz it's creating.
