Sorry, it's been so long this I've bought one.

Get a play and charge kit and gives you a battery and mini USB cable;

Thanks - that looks promising. I can charge the controller when the XB1X is in standby mode, too. It looks like the best alternative to a wired controller. Still odd that there doesn't seem to be a reliable wired XB1X controller around, though...

I think it also works if you plug it into a PC.

That's because plugging the Xbox controller in with any standard micro-USB to full-size USB cable will turns it into a wired controller. It automatically switches from wireless signal to wired connection when plugged in, no battery required for wired either: https://support.xbox.com/en-GB/xbox-one ... controller

By Jove, you're right! I just tried out the extra-long USB cable I use with my PS4 controller and - would you believe it? - it works! You just saved me from another misguided Amazon purchase! :toot: GRcade to the rescue yet again! Thanks - very grateful.

You can take the batteries out too when using a USB cable if you prefer a lighter feeling controller. I do find that micro USB connection is a bit gooseberry fool though... move the controller a tiny bit and you can get disconnects (maybe it's my cable)

My Xbox One X has died. :cry:

It's been coming for a few weeks to be honest. I've been getting regular messages popping up to tell me 'There is a problem with your saved games', and then being instructed to clear the local save games. It's been very annoying, really. The number of times that, after making some good progress in a game, that message has popped up and I've had to replay the same bits again :dread:

Then, the last few days, it's all gone completely tits up. The console won't restart automatically following the local save games clearance, numerous error message codes, freezing during gameplay, I've spent the last few evenings more or less constantly unplugging and plugging in the damned thing.

Anyway, Xbox UK customer support have been ....fairly mixed. The initial agent was adamant that a repair wasn't an option, and all that was needed was an offline update. So, despite my protestations that this clearly wasn't a software issue, I set about downloading the update from their website.

Four strawberry floating hours later, it had completed downloading (and I have a pretty speedy internet connection) and so I copied it over to a memory stick and plugged it in.

Less than a second later, the message 'Something went wrong' appeared.

Anyway, there's a new console now in the post to me, which is due to arrive tomorrow.

I called off his players' names as they came marching up the steps behind him....All nice guys. They'll finish last. Nice guys. Finish last.

I didn't think Saves were saved locally on Xbox's...

Hope you have most of your games on external drives man. :dread:

Saves are stored both on the hard drive & cloud.

Yeh it needs to be local to be usable

Sounds like the drive has gone. Good that another console is on the way.

Yeah, I think it must be the drive itself, although the first agent I spoke to on the phone was determined that it couldn't be.

The second one though, who I spoke with via online chat, couldn't have been more helpful really. So it's a rapid replacement service where I just send the busted one back in the box the new arrives in.

@Photek I was pretty worried each time I had to reset it about losing games etc. Never been so grateful for the awesome power of the cloud!

Gnomes Garden is £2 in the sale. And I’m going to buy it.

Unfortunately, having downloaded and tried playing Dragon Age II on XB1X back-compat, I have to report I immediately ran into a few bugs. One early real-time cut-scene insisted on replaying itself, whilst the game itself seems strangely broken in places with jarring cuts between sections and some questionable animations. The image quality is noticeably improved over the 360 version, but imo this just serves to highlight the game's overall deficiencies. A real let-down.

I found that after a relatively short period of time, the usb connector/socket on the official controller "got loose" and i would regularly lose connection. I would try different usb leads but it wouldnt maintain connection.

I bought this;
https://www.argos.co.uk/product/8247566
PDP Xbox One Controller - Blue £25.
Felt a bit light at first but i got used to it. Had it about a year now and its still good. IMO It plays exactly like an official controller.
