I haven't finished Axiom Verge but I have to say it's great. Well worth buying if you've not played it elsewhere and like Metroidvania styled games.

ID@Xbox Games Soar Into GDC

Yesterday, I shared details on the exciting progress we’ve seen with the ID@Xbox self-publishing program for independent developers. It’s an incredible time for the industry and this week we’re thrilled to offer a sneak peek at some of the games coming soon to Xbox One and Windows 10.

Between the GDC Lobby Bar and a press preview event Microsoft is hosting today, there is a lot for fans to be excited for – and this is just a tiny sample!

2Dark (Gloomywood) [Xbox One] – 2Dark is a unique mix of stealth, horror and adventure. In 2Dark, you guide former detective Mr. Smith in his quest to find and free his kidnapped children in the sinister and macabre town of Gloomywood.

Adventure on Clover Island (Right Nice Games) [Xbox One] – Adventure on Clover Island is an action platformer game focused on platforming, fighting enemies, exploring, large bosses and humor. You will be focused on melee, close-range combat and mechanical enemies.

Anamorphine (Artifact 5) [Xbox One] – Anamorphine is a first-person surreal exploration game where you experience the memories of the main character after an unknown trauma. You play as Tyler, who is ¬finding himself as he hits rock bottom. Discover what happened to him by journeying through Tyler’s memories of his relationship with his wife Elena and her depression.

Beacon (Monothetic) [Xbox One] – Beacon is a sci-fi themed Action Roguelike. You play as Freja, a highly skilled pilot for the private military sector who’s crashed on an unidentified planet. You must fight your way through randomly generated levels, attempting to find your ship’s Beacon to escape the planet.
Below (Capy Games) [Xbox One] – Below is a top-down perspective adventure game about exploration contingent upon the character’s survival. You are a warrior exploring the depths of a remote island.

Candle Man (Spotlightor) [Xbox One] – Candle Man is game with unique low-light gameplay. An attractive story that takes place in a dreamlike world, it features beautiful dynamic lighting effects, light & shadow based challenges and puzzles.

Chambara (Team OK) [Xbox One] – Chambara is a local multiplayer stealth/death-match game with only two colors. This enables you to seamlessly camouflage yourself with the environment, empowering you to sneak, search, and ambush each other in dramatic and stylish duels.

Coffin Dodgers (Milky Tea Studios) [Xbox One] – Coffin Dodgers is set on the mean streets of a retirement village. You have to help save one of seven old retirees on your very own “pimped-up” mobility scooter, battling the Grim Reaper and his zombie army who are out to harvest souls.

Deliver Us the Moon (KeokeN Interactive) [Xbox One] – Deliver Us the Moon is a space survival/exploration game that takes place in a future earth, where our resources are almost depleted. In this apocalyptic scenario, where the major powers of the world cannot agree on what the best course of action to take to help humanity, the WSA (World Space Agency) decides in secrecy to send a lone astronaut to the moon to discover each country’s research in order to pool it together and figure out a way to save mankind.

Element (Flightless) [Xbox One] – Element is a real-time strategy space game for people who don’t have time to play real-time strategy space games. You are escaping a decaying solar system. You must visit each planet, mine enough element and defeat the enemy to progress to the outer planets and beyond.

EVERSPACE (RockFish Games) [Xbox One, Windows 10] – EVERSPACE is a 3D shooter that takes an in-depth look at the beauty of space while sending you to exotic destinations. You’re a space pilot, and you must get your cargo to your destination without being shot down by enemy ships. Through a series of levels and upgrades, your missions will challenge both your skills and your ingenuity as you explore the universe one flight at a time.

Flight Simulator (Dovetail Games) [Xbox One, Windows 10] – Take to the skies in the World’s favorite flight simulator! Take off from anywhere in the world, flying some of the world’s most iconic aircraft to any one of 24,000 destinations.

Her Majesty’s SPIFFING (Billy Goat Entertainment Ltd) [Xbox One] – Her Majesty’s SPIFFING is a quintessentially English 3D adventure game full of jovial puzzles, impeccable manners and plenty of humor (that’s humor with a ‘u’… a second ‘u’). Set in a fictional future you assume the role of Captain Frank Lee English (an astronaut and a gentleman), tasked with a mission set by none other than the Queen Herself. Your mission is to scour the galaxy in search of new worlds to claim for a Galactic British Empire!

Human: Fall Flat (No Brakes Games) [Xbox One] – Human: Fall Flat is a quirky, open-ended physics-based third person puzzle and exploration game set in surreal, floating dreamscapes. Your goal is to escape the dreams of falling by solving puzzles with nothing but your wits and physics.

Jotun (Thunder Lotus Games) [Xbox One] – Jotun is a hand-drawn action/exploration game set in Norse mythology. In Jotun, you play Thora, a Norse warrior who died an inglorious death and must prove herself to the Gods to enter Valhalla.

Kerbal Space Program (Deported V.B.) [Xbox One] – Kerbal Space Program is a multi-genre game where you can create your own space program. You must build a space-worthy craft, capable of flying its crew out into space, without killing them. At your disposal is a collection of parts, which must be assembled to create a functional ship. Each part has its own function and will affect the way a ship flies (or doesn’t). So strap yourself in, and get ready to try some Rocket Science!

Kingdom (Noio and Licorice) [Xbox One, Windows 10] – Kingdom is a 2D, pixel-art, sidescrolling strategy/resource management game. You control a king or queen that rides back and forth, collecting coins and using those coins to spend on various resources, such as hiring soldiers and weapon smiths, building defenses against creatures that can attack and steal the king or queen’s crown (which will end the game), and otherwise expanding your kingdom.

Kyub (Ninja-Egg) [Xbox One, Windows 10] – Kyub is an action/puzzle game that can become extremely challenging. There are more than 80 levels to master. Even the strongest players will find that the logical but devious puzzles will take many hours to solve!

Manual Samuel (Perfectly Paranormal) [Xbox One] – Manual Samuel is a comedy physics-based adventure/survival game. After a meeting with Death, you (Sam) are offered a deal: to live for 24 hours manually, or have your immortal soul tortured in Hell for all eternity. Choosing the more favorable option, Manual Samuel is the story of that one day in which you have to control every one of your bodily functions, be it to breath in and out, move your limbs, blink, work, kiss and even use the restroom.

Perception (The Deep End Games) [Xbox One] – Perception is a new narrative horror adventure game where you play a young blind woman using your extraordinary hearing and razor-sharp wits to unravel the mysteries of an abandoned estate that haunts your dreams.

Pit People (The Behemoth) [Xbox One, Windows 10] – Pit People is a fast-paced, turn-based, co-op adventure game from the legendary creators of Castle Crashers, Battleblock Theater, and Alien Hominid. Dogged at every step by a mysterious and power-hungry narrator, you’ll need to rally your troops and steel your wits if you hope to survive a hostile world filled with sinister robots, deadly vampires and brutally adorable cupcake people!

Pixel Galaxy (Serenity Forge) [Xbox One] – Pixel Galaxy puts a major twist in the shoot ’em up genre. Not only does it take away your own ability to shoot, but it compels you to collect enemies as both your shooters and shields, to grow your ship into any shape you want.

R.B.I. 16 (MLB Advanced Media) [Xbox One] – Make the play with your favorite Major League Baseball team and win the World Series! R.B.I. 16 features enhanced lighting and graphics, revamped defensive AI, improved batting system, and the ability to sim through games in Season mode. Track your season stats by team, player and league leaders across multiple seasons.

Rivals of Aether (Dan Fornace) [Xbox One, Windows 10] – Rivals of Aether is a fighting game set in a world where warring civilizations summon the power of Fire, Water, Air, and Earth. Choose a Rival to bring into the battlefield and manipulate the powers of the classical elements and animal movement. Untangle the mysterious conflicts of the planet Aether in Story Mode or take your combat skills online and challenge your friends across the world.

Rocket Fist (Daniel Snd) [Xbox One] – Rocket Fist is a multiplayer arena that plays like a cross between dodgeball and billiards. You can hold one Rocket Fist at a time and only get one shot to throw your punch before having to run, hide and dodge to pick it back up! The matches are fast and intense, so players can rotate in and out quickly and it’s entertaining to watch.

Shadow Complex: Remastered (ChAIR Entertainment) [Xbox One] – The beloved Shadow Complex (a side-scrolling spy game from 2009) is back and has been remastered for its 2016 release! There will be new graphics, achievements, and challenges.

Sniper Elite 4 (Rebellion Interactive Limited) [Xbox One] – Sniper Elite 4 is the next installment in the chart-topping shooter series. You must fight alongside the brave men and women of the Italian Resistance to help free their country from the yoke of Fascism, and defeat a terrifying new threat with the potential to halt the Allied fightback in Europe before it’s even begun. If your mission fails, there will be no Operation Overlord, no D-Day landings, and no Victory in Europe.

Song of the Deep (Insomniac) [Xbox One] – Song of the Deep is a Metroidvania-style action-adventure game following a young girl’s quest into the unknown to find her missing father. Combining discovery, skill, and suspense with an unforgettable narrative, this underwater journey will challenge you to explore, experiment, and skillfully navigate a vast ocean landscape.

Stikbold! (Reign Bros) [Xbox One] – Stikbold is a glorious and intense sport, which will put your friendships to the test with fast-paced, hard-hitting and occasionally hilariously unfair gameplay. Go on an exciting co-op adventure through the charming story campaign, or test your skills against friends and family, in the definitive battle of the living room.

Subnautica (Unknown Worlds) [Xbox One] – Subnautica is an open-world exploration game without weapons. You crash-land on an alien underwater planet and you must figure out how to survive, discover the reasons you’re here and make a critical choice about finding your way home.

SUPERHOT (Superhot) [Xbox One] – SUPERHOT is the first person shooter where time moves only when you move. See the bullets crawling towards you as you carefully plan your steps and aim your gun. Enjoy the mayhem that is unleashed as you put that plan into motion. Dodge bullets. Take out your enemies. One step at a time.

Swordy (Frogshark) [Xbox One] – Swordy’s core gameplay is physics based combat. It is “easy to learn, but hard to master”. You are able to get a real sense of weight and cohesion because of the physics interactions. It just feels good to swing a sword, to throw a hammer, to get a good swing on someone and see the juicy outcome of characters flying, weapons and coins dropping and blood splattering.

The Mean Greens – Plastic Warfare (Virtual Basement LLC / Code Headquarters LLC) [Xbox One] – The Mean Greens – Plastic Warefare is a unique take on a third person shooter which bridges the gap in player groups based on its appeal to all ages. Through capture the flag, foosball, and attack and defend inspired levels, you can select from your arsenal of weapons to combat your way to victory. So zipline your way to success!

The Turing Test (Bulkhead Interactive) [Xbox One, Windows 10] – The Turing Test is a first person puzzler that explores the phenomena of consciousness and challenges the meaning of human intuition. You take control of Ava Turing, an engineer for the International Space Agency (ISA), and progress through a narrated story of introspection and morality whilst uncovering the hidden mysteries of Europa. Delve into The Turing Test’s human interaction puzzles and arm yourself with logical and methodical thinking.

The World to the West (Rain AS) [Xbox One] – World to the West is a top-down action adventure game, set in a land of ancient civilizations and corrupt colonies. You will traverse everything from lush, dangerous jungles to sinister ruins, meeting challenges head-on using your wits, brute force and clever technology.

Thimbleweek Park (Terrible Toybox) [Xbox One, Windows 10] – Thimbleweed Park is an all new 2D point & click adventure game about two washed up detectives investigating a dead body found in the river just outside of town. It’s a game where you switch between five playable characters while uncovering the dark, satirical and bizarre world of Thimbleweed Park.

To Azimuth ([bracket] games) [Xbox One] – To Aziumth is a David Lynch style alien abduction mystery where you take on the role of Susannah or Nate in their search for Eli. Each character has their own separate story, though the narratives of each intersect and intertwine in many ways. To Azimuth is, at its heart, an adventure game. Much of the game will entail exploring environments and rummaging about to look for pieces of information and clues, many of which will be locked behind environmental puzzles rooted in real-world logic.

Tumblestone (The Quantum Astrophysicists Guild) [Xbox One] – Tumblestone is an action-puzzle game where you can race your friends in multiplayer or challenge yourself in story mode. Solve progressively more difficult and creative puzzles, help a sausage make friends, and find out what happened to the Tumblecrown.

Warhammer: End Times – Vermintide (Fatshark AB) [Xbox One] – Warhammer: End Times – Vermintide builds is a first-person shooter video game. Set in the End Times, you can team up with three other players to fight against the Skaven, a race of rodent-like monstrous creatures, in the city of Ubersreik. At the end of each match, you are given the opportunity to roll dice, which determine the weapons they will receive.

Worms WMD (Team 17) [Xbox One, Windows 10] – Worms W.M.D features a fresh, brand new look 2D cartoon-inspired worm as well as gorgeous hand drawn landscapes. For the first time ever you will be able to use exciting new vehicles and even enter buildings which will add new strategic elements of gameplay to the traditional wormy warfare.

Out 11th May -

Announcing the ID@Xbox Game Fest!

We’re very proud of the progress that we’ve made with the ID@Xbox program, which enables qualified game developers of all sizes to unleash their creativity by self-publishing digital games on Xbox One and Windows 10 with Xbox Live. Today, to celebrate the amazing success and bright future of ID@Xbox, we’re kicking off the ID@Xbox Game Fest – a month-long celebration that’s designed to show off the breadth of amazing content offered by independent developers on Xbox One.

“Since the days of the original Xbox, I have been a huge fan of independent games that bring us incredibly creative and unique experiences you just cannot find anywhere else,” said Aaron Greenberg, General Manager of Product Marketing, Xbox. “The innovation of great games coming from developers in the ID@Xbox program is incredible, from big hits like ARK: Survival Evolved and Rocket League, to discovering totally new experiences like Oxenfree, The Flame in the Flood, and Superhot.”

Each week in May, we’ll be highlighting a new batch of very special games, including some brand-new releases that we’re super-excited to show you. Each week’s selection of ID@Xbox titles will feature a specific theme, along with additional creator spotlight content and special discounts for our fans. Here’s a tease of what each week will bring.

May 3-9: Discover. ID@Xbox has hosted a number of memorable, outside-the-box games, like The Park, Beyond Eyes, and Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime. And that’s just the start. It’s time to broaden your horizons – discover new experiences, new creators, and new ways to play!

May 10-16: Play for Free. Everyone loves free stuff, and Xbox One is home to many top-notch free-to-play titles, such as Smite, Warframe, and ROBLOX. We’ll show you some of the best games from independent developers that you can play for free right now, to get the most bang for your non-buck.

May 17-23: What’s Next. The Xbox Game Preview program has already featured a number of acclaimed titles, including Layers of Fear (which has since graduated to a full release!), The Long Dark, and The Solus Project. We’ve got more games coming to the program, and this is your chance to get early access to tomorrow’s future indie hits, engage with developers, and help shape the next wave of awesome games

May 24-30: Best of ID@Xbox. Finally, we’ve got some great deals on some of the best ID@Xbox games and bundles. Most of these indie standouts need no introduction – we’re talking stuff like Rocket League, Rogue Legacy, The Escapists, and The Banner Saga. If you’ve never experienced them, we’re going to be offering you plenty of incentive to pick some of these modern classics.

“The last year has been awesome for ID@Xbox developers. Just recently, ID@Xbox devs occupied four of the top five slots on both the Top Paid and Top Free charts on Xbox One, which is pretty rad! It’s amazing to be able to celebrate some of the successes developers have had with the ID@Xbox Game Fest, and I’m also really excited to be able to resurface some really great games that I hope people will take the time to check out, such as Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime and Lifeless Planet,” said Chris Charla, Head of ID@Xbox. “Looking at the titles we’re featuring in the ID@Xbox Game Fest, it’s hard to believe so many great titles have come through ID@Xbox over the past couple of years. I’m stoked to go back and replay some of these titles, and check out any gems I may have missed!”

Check back here this Tuesday, May 3, for more details on what’s in store for our first week of the ID@Xbox Game Fest – and keep your eyes on Xbox Wire throughout the month for all kinds of content that highlights how awesome all of our independent developers (and their games!) are!

Cloud Powered Record Breaking MMO Age of Ascent Ported Easily on XB1 via UWP, Will Have CrossPlay

You may not have heard of it, but Age of Ascent is certainly one game of a kind. UK indie developer Illyriad Games believes in epic, truly massive MMO games and that’s exactly what they set out to do with Age of Ascent.

In order to do that, they leveraged the power of Microsoft’s Azure cloud. During recent presentations at GDC 2016 and Build, they talked about reaching 50K concurrent players in a single battle, something that no other game has ever achieved before. Obviously, we were immediately interested in knowing more and we reached out to the developer for an interview.

CEO James Niesewand was very happy to talk at length about Age of Ascent and the technology behind it. We’ll start our coverage with an exclusive reveal: the game has been ported to the Universal Windows Platform and will be available on Xbox One, with full crossplay functionality.

Q) Have you ever considered whether to release Age of Ascent on consoles, like PlayStation 4 or Xbox One?

I’ll probably get spanked by the Microsoft PR department for mentioning this – as I don’t think this is public knowledge, yet…. But if you freeze-frame at 1m33s on this video (a video produced about a month ago by Microsoft themselves, I hasten to add)… I think it’s pretty clear, and you can reach your own conclusion

Image

Q) Will there be cross-play with PC and if so, will it be with both the Windows Store and Steam versions?

Yes, the universe will be concurrent, shared and ubiquitous. The xbox players will play with the Windows Store players, the Steam players, the iOS players, the Android players, as well as the native web Chrome/Firefox/Edge etc players. One universe, shared by all.

Q) What was your experience developing for the Xbox One? Did you have any troubles using the esRAM module?

It’s been very easy via UWP to port to the Xbox One. We don’t have access to esRAM via UWP, so that’s not been a concern or a help/hindrance at all. The simple fact is that if the game can be played on a $200 Chromebook, it can be played on an Xbox one without access to the specific hardware abilities of the device. Universality is the name of the game for us.

Q)Did you have to tone down the graphics or scale of the game on Xbox One at all? Can you tell us the target resolution and frame rate?

No, we haven’t had to change the graphics or scale in any way. Most of the hard-stuff-concurrency-scale of AoA is handed off to the cloud anyway; so the actual device that renders the game world matters fairly little. As mentioned earlier, a phone without a dedicated GPU might struggle a bit – but we’ve tested AoA on a 950XL cellphone, casting via Continuum to a 1080p TV at 60fps… and that worked fine! We target 60fps at 1080p, with a minimum playable baseline at 30fps (any resolution). We’ve had players playing on 4k+ super-widescreen custom rigs quite happily sending us videos of their PvP combats at 60fps, whilst playing the game in Chrome (!) – which is great to see. Depending on hardware etc, ymmv. We’ve always felt that players should be able to control their rendering environment directly. The software shouldn’t fight the hardware unnecessarily. The most important thing to a player (in the fast-paced depths of an epic PvP combat) is that the framerate stays up there and that their control inputs and rendering outputs match the simulated shared world physics engine at par value with everyone else in the same gameworld. And if a player is on a specific device that can’t do X or Y thing as well (be that lighting fx, shadows etc) then they should be able to dial that down to a setting that satisfies their hardware – if they find it’s getting in the way of playability. We will, of course, provide recommended settings for each devices’ capabilities as far as we can ascertain them – but players should have the control to override these up and down, as they wish.

It's a bit of a quandary for MS at mo, I mean I think they had it in one of the windows on the right hand side when it launched but not continuously, if they added more tiles people would complain, usually one of them is showing what games are free with Live the other 2 are main games or DLC. It was in the 'New Releases' list on front page of store.

They've been looking at ways to solve showing the smaller games and indie games off as they are hard to find at mo. I think having an Indie option in store at top would go some way, and also releasing them on the same day would work well, like every Wednesday which they did on 360. I believe they wanted that but then folk complained that they had to wait for games that were ready to come out, I still think its a little too sporadic at mo.

EX-LIONHEAD DEVELOPERS BRINGING SECRET FABLE CARD GAME TO KICKSTARTER

IGN can reveal that Lionhead was secretly developing a free-to-play, Fable-branded digital card game, Fable Fortune, for 18 months before the studio’s closure - and now it’s headed to Kickstarter.

Flaming Fowl Studios is a new indie developer co-founded by Lionhead veterans Craig Oman, Mike West and Marcus Lynn and set up to finish the game its creators started. Microsoft has given the team its backing to continue to use the Fable license but, now without a publisher behind it, Flaming Fowl has turned to crowdfunding to complete the project.

The game begins its Kickstarter campaign tomorrow, Tuesday May 31 at 3pm BST / 10am ET / 7am PT. The team hope to raise at least £250,000 in four weeks, with multiple stretch goals planned beyond that.

Flaming Fowl expects Fortune will be ready for a closed beta within a few weeks of the end of the campaign, an open beta on PC and Xbox One in October, with a full release to follow late in 2017.

So, what is it?

Fortune will be immediately familiar to those who play the likes of Hearthstone - with players choosing from eight planned deck-altering heroes and aiming to reduce opponents’ health to zero using a variety of spell types - but comes with its own twists.

According to West, the team’s ethos is “improving the genre”, which includes using a more engaging 3D art style, offering a full online co-op mode against AI “bosses” using themed decks, a leveling system for cards used regularly, and Trophy Cards, extra units or spells offered to the player who plays second.

It equally looks to appeal to fans of the series from which it takes its name. Drawing on characters, locations and even in-jokes from throughout Fable history - including using lost character concepts never before seen in the games - Fortune aims to be a full translation of Fable to the CCG format, British humour and all.

It even builds familiar Fable-like elements into its game’s structure - completing mid-match “quests” like casting certain types of card or spending enough mana will allow you to make a good or evil choice, transforming your hero, their powers, and even morphing certain cards into new forms.

The game’s design is far from complete, however. “We’re looking to build this game with the fans,” explains West, “and then potentially morph and change things about the game over time. This is our starting position - we need to find out what people want from a CCG, and we’re ready to talk to them.

West brings up the possibility of adding limited, draft-style play, 2v2 PvP modes, single player campaigns and more. Kickstarter backers will gain access to closed forums where those discussions can take place.

ID@Xbox Games Descend on GDC 2017

It’s an exciting time for the ID@Xbox self-publishing program for independent developers and this week, we’re on the ground in San Francisco for our fourth Game Developers Conference. Since ID@Xbox’s inception, we’ve seen more than 450 titles launch through the program, with incredible engagement from fans. In fact, in 2016 alone, tens of million of gamers played an ID@Xbox title on Xbox One or Windows 10, totaling more than one billion hours of gameplay.

With a press preview event being hosted today, the team has even more in store for 2017 and beyond. Here’s a quick peek of ID@Xbox games at GDC:

Developed by Beep Industries and published by Microsoft, Voodoo Vince debuted in September 2003 as an Xbox exclusive. This quirky puzzle platformer set in the magical underbelly of New Orleans is only playable on the original Xbox, which has sadly meant that fans have lost access to an old favorite over the years and many people have never had a chance to try it at all.

This will change on April 18 when the wisecracking voodoo doll fondly remembered by a generation of gamers comes back to life courtesy of a sprinkle of Zombie Dust. Voodoo Vince: Remastered, an HD remake for Xbox One and Windows, will be a $14.99 download on Xbox Live, the Windows Store, and Steam.

Voodoo Vince: Remastered features:

- Classic puzzle platforming gameplay that has been preserved exactly as it was in the original
- Gorgeous high-def visuals: 1080p resolution with 16:9 aspect ratio and updated rendering and visual effects
- 60 fps gameplay -- Voodoo Vince plays like butter!
- Select soundtrack updates and remixes by the game's original composer, Steve Kirk
- Xbox Live integration and achievements with Xbox Play Anywhere support
- Rumble/haptic feedback
- Loads of Snark-ariffic, sarcastic humor
