Genuinely hope they never sell 25m worldwide if it means you'll sleep for eternity.

My threads are more expensive than the others so it's not a fair comparison.

Gaming revenue increased slightly, as growth in revenue from Xbox Live and video games was offset in part by lower Xbox hardware revenue. Xbox Live revenue increased 17%, driven by both higher volumes of transactions and revenue per transaction. Video games revenue grew 66%, driven by sales of Minecraft. We acquired Mojang AB, the Swedish video game developer of the Minecraft gaming franchise, in November 2014. Xbox hardware revenue decreased 17%, mainly due to lower volumes of Xbox 360 consoles sold.

No more shipment numbers other than for special occasions -

The second metric that's changing is the addition of Xbox Live active users that replaces the Xbox console unit metric. Console sales will continue to be provided in other earnings materials when they are a driver of changes and revenue and operating income.

The addition of Xbox Live active users demonstrates the opportunity that we see to extend our gaming assets beyond the living room to PCs, tablets, phones and other form factors with Windows 10 and is more aligned to our long-term opportunity.

Original Story: Microsoft has announced the results of its first fiscal quarter for the current year. The company has not revealed how many consoles it shipped, which is a change from past reporting practices.

Update: Microsoft will not be using console shipments as its primary metric for success beginning with this quarter, we have been told. The company is more focused on engagement, leading it to choose Xbox Live usership as its leading statistic.

While that doesn't mean we won't hear about console shipment statistics, it won't be something we should expect to see every quarter. Microsoft also indicates that the 39 million Xbox Live users reported today are more narrowly defined now. We've been told that this metric now reflects users that have logged in within the past month. No differentiation has been made between gold (paying) and silver (free) members.

Why won't they just confirm what the install base is? Surely investors want to know this.

Focusing on active users fits in better with the services model the company is adopting under Nadella. They need to back that up by showing their interest in PC gaming lasts beyond Windows 10 launch window.

Not really related to Xbox, unless you count the fact it's what powers Cortana, but this is the first quarter where Bing has been profitable for Microsoft.

18m sold apparently

If this is the case it's still tracking ahead of Xbox 360, not too shabby.

It's probably a lot higher than 18 million.

If they are gauging 18 million Windows 10 activations for Xbox One then surely that doesn't take into account all of the people who still don't bother with online and who don't even own Windows 10?

So Windows 10 activations means anyone who is using NXOE.

It's possible that there are people out there who aren't using NXOE but I can't imagine there are many, and you have to connect your Xbox One to the internet at least once to get the thing up and running.

I don't know where she's getting her figures from though and whether or not she's just guessing.

Aaah right. Didn't know they would be able to track through NXOE. Also forgot you had to connect to the internet for a one off time.
