PostXbox One "sales" Thread - Gaming revenue up 64% & hardware revenue up 49%.
by Monkey Man » Sat Nov 23, 2013 2:03 am

Gaming revenue increased $1.3 billion or 64%, driven by growth in Xbox content and services. Xbox content and services revenue increased $1.2 billion or 65%, primarily due to record engagement, including strength from third-party titles, as stay-at-home guidelines continued. Xbox hardware revenue increased 49%, primarily due to an increase in volume of consoles sold.

Microsoft has announced record engagement figures for gaming services including Xbox Live and Xbox Game Pass.

Xbox Live active users approached 90 million and Game Pass subscribers topped 10 million during the company’s third financial quarter ended March 31, 2020.

“People everywhere are turning to gaming to sustain human connection while practising social distancing and we continue to deliver new exclusive first and third-party content to attract and retain gamers,” Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said during the company’s earnings call on Wednesday.

“We saw all-time record engagement this quarter, with nearly 90 million active users of Xbox Live, led by the strength on and off-console.

“Xbox Game Pass has more than 10 million subscribers and we’re seeing increased monetisation of in-game content and services.

“And our Project xCloud gaming service now has hundreds of thousands of users in preview across seven countries, with eight more launching in the coming weeks.”

Microsoft’s third quarter gaming revenue declined by 1% ($14 million) year-over-year to $2.35 billion.

Xbox hardware revenue fell 20%, “primarily due to a decrease in price of consoles sold”, while Xbox content and services revenue grew 2% ($33 million)
, “primarily due to increased engagement following stay-at-home guidelines, offset in part by a high prior year comparable primarily from a third-party title”, most likely Fortnite.

Microsoft has closed out the fourth quarter of its 2019 fiscal year with year-over-year decreases in both its game and Xbox businesses, declines that come as the next generation of consoles looms on the horizon.

For the quarter ending June 30, the company reported a $233 million decrease in game revenue, down about 10 percent from the same period last year. That makes for just over $2.05 billion in game revenue, down from $2.29 billion during the same period last year.

Microsoft’s earnings report calls out a 48 percent year-over-year decline in Xbox hardware revenue specifically, noting that the shift was mainly due to a decrease in consoles sold during the quarter. Xbox software and services, meanwhile, fell by 3 percent year-over-year, offset partially by a rise in subscriptions. Microsoft notes that it had a strong Q4 in that category last year, which likely also contributed to the year-over-year decline.

However on a yearly basis, the company saw an increase in game revenue. Its games business as a whole saw $11.39 billion for the 2019 financial year, up from $10.35 billion in 2018. Monthly active Xbox Live users have also increased over the last year. As of June 30, 2019, Xbox Live has 65 million MAUs, up from 57 million at this same point last year.

Q1 2018 -

Image

----------------------------------------------------------

The first week sales of Xbox One X is over 80,000 in the UK, GamesIndustry.biz can reveal.

Retailers have shared data that reveal that Microsoft's new super-powered console has sold as many units in its first week as Nintendo Switch did in March (hardware figures are up-weighted 20%. Xbox One X raw data is at 67,000).

It's first week sales are also well ahead of PS4 Pro, which did a little over 50,000 back in November 2016. Indeed, it took PS4 Pro four weeks to reach the same number.

Of course, stock shortages of both PS4 Pro and Switch will have impacted the performance of those machines.

The majority of sales were for the special Project Scorpio version of the machine.

It's a pleasing performance for Microsoft, which has had a quiet year in terms of new Xbox products so far.

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2 ... first-week

Gaming revenue increased slightly, as growth in revenue from Xbox Live and video games was offset in part by lower Xbox hardware revenue. Xbox Live revenue increased 17%, driven by both higher volumes of transactions and revenue per transaction. Video games revenue grew 66%, driven by sales of Minecraft. We acquired Mojang AB, the Swedish video game developer of the Minecraft gaming franchise, in November 2014. Xbox hardware revenue decreased 17%, mainly due to lower volumes of Xbox 360 consoles sold.

No more shipment numbers other than for special occasions -

The second metric that's changing is the addition of Xbox Live active users that replaces the Xbox console unit metric. Console sales will continue to be provided in other earnings materials when they are a driver of changes and revenue and operating income.

The addition of Xbox Live active users demonstrates the opportunity that we see to extend our gaming assets beyond the living room to PCs, tablets, phones and other form factors with Windows 10 and is more aligned to our long-term opportunity.

Xbox One sells better than PS4 in Latin America in 2014

Latin America is now the second fastest growing gaming region in the world just behind Asia Pacific but ahead of North America and Western Europe. This year we expect revenue generated by home console software sales to exceed $1.2 billion and account for around 30% of total revenue generated by video games software in the region. Console hardware revenues are expected to exceed $3 billion this year across Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo.

Looking back to 2014 we can see that Latin America was the third largest market for console hardware revenues with total sales amounting to $2.8 billion, just behind North America and Western Europe who saw revenues of $5.1 billion and $4.7 billion respectively. In Latin America the Xbox One was the best selling next generation console in 2014 through official sales channels.

Computing and Gaming Hardware revenue increased $591 million or 44%, driven by higher Surface and Xbox Platform revenue. Gross margin increased $417 million, and benefitted from the mix shift to Surface Pro 3 and Surface 3.

· Surface revenue increased 117% to $888 million, driven by Surface Pro 3 and Surface 3 units sold. We launched Surface Pro 3 and Surface 3 in June 2014 and May 2015, respectively.

· Xbox Platform revenue increased $86 million or 10%, driven by higher volumes of consoles sold, offset in part by lower prices of Xbox Ones sold. We sold 1.4 million consoles in the fourth quarter compared to 1.1 million consoles during the prior year.

· Computing and Gaming Hardware revenue included an unfavorable foreign currency impact of approximately 6%.

. Xbox Live transactions revenue increased $205 million or 58%, reflecting increased users and revenue per user.

1.6m Xbox's shipped last quarter -

The firm said the 30% growth in the Xbox Live service was “driven by increased users and deeper user engagement” and contributed to company wide revenues of $21.7 billion. Xbox Live users increased by 18%.

Xbox Platform revenue decreased $306 million or 24%, driven by a 20% decline in console volume and lower prices of Xbox One consoles compared to the prior year. The firm moved 1.6 million Xbox consoles during Q3 compared with 2 million year-over-year.

For the nine months ended March 31, compared to the same period in 2014, Computing and Gaming Hardware revenue increased $499 million or 6%, primarily due to higher revenue from Surface, offset in part by lower revenue from Xbox Platform.

Xbox Platform revenue decreased $471 million or 8%, driven by lower prices of Xbox One consoles compared to the prior year, as well as a decrease in second and third-party video games revenue.

Microsoft sold 10.7 million Xbox consoles during the first nine months of FY15, which is a 100,000 unit increase compared with 10.6 million consoles during the same period in 2014.

Computing and Gaming Hardware gross margin, which is the difference between revenue and cost, increased $479 million or 55%, mainly due to higher revenue. Computing and Gaming cost of revenue was flat. Xbox Platform cost of revenue decreased $138 million or 3%, mainly due to lower cost per console sold.

For Q3, Computing and Gaming Hardware revenue decreased $72 million or 4%, primarily due to lower revenue from the Xbox Platform. Microsoft said part of the decline was due to “unfavorable foreign currency impact of approximately 4%.”

Cost of revenue decreased, primarily due to a $265 million or 27% decline in Xbox Platform cost of revenue, driven by lower volumes and a lower cost per console sold.

Despite the lower Q3 sales of Xbox consoles, and rather flat nine-month sales, revenue for company’s Device and Consumer business, which houses Xbox, grew $9 billion or 8% to $1.3 billion over the last nine months, thanks to Surface Pro, Xbox Live, first-party video games, Minecraft, and Office 365 Consumer.

For Q3, the Device and Consumer division reported $456 million, an increase of 25%, partly due to higher revenue from Xbox Live, first-party video games and Minecraft.

Xbox Live and other store transaction revenue increased $144 million or 32% thanks to Xbox Live transaction revenue. First-party video games and Minecraft revenue also increased, mainly due to sales of Minecraft following the acquisition of Mojang.

For the nine months, store transaction revenue, which includes Xbox Live, increased $315 million or 25%, primarily due to growth in Xbox Live transaction revenue, driven by increased users and revenue per user.

First-party video games and Minecraft revenue increased $305 million or 83%, mainly due to sales of Minecraft and new Xbox titles released in the current year.

http://www.vg247.com/2015/04/23/xbox-li ... inancials/

Devices and Consumer revenue grew 8% to $12.9 billion, with the following business highlights:

· Xbox console sales totaled 6.6 million units, with strong holiday season performance

• Xbox One became the best-selling console in the U.S. in November and December and weekly average sales during these months outpaced Xbox 360 by 50 percent at the same point in its lifecycle.*

• Xbox One also sold more games throughout November and December in the U.S. than any other current-generation platform.*

Sales of both next-gen consoles were up sharply week-on-week in the UK last week as retailers offered some great Black Friday deals.

Overall games hardware sales (both consoles and handhelds) soared past 300k units, a retail source has told MCV. Home console sales in the UK are at this point double were they were at the same stage in 2013, although the handheld market is down by almost a third.

Both the PS4 and Xbox One saw sales double week-on-week, with Xbox One again just edging ahead of its rival.

The gap between Xbox One and PS4 continues to narrow, with Xbox One deals a more visible presence than either PS4 or Wii U both on the High Street and online this weekend.

http://www.mcvuk.com/news/read/black-fr ... oo/0142152

Xbox One has smashed the one million sales barrier in the UK, MCV can reveal.

It’s hit this number after out-selling PlayStation 4 for three weeks in a row, UK retailers have told us.

The resurgence in Xbox One sales has come on the back of a number of blockbuster game launches, including Sunset Overdrive, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare and Halo: The Master Chief Collection.

Microsoft has also bolstered its hardware line with a special White Xbox One and a 1TB Call of Duty-branded machine, while retailers have been running a number of promotions.

“We’re seeing fantastic momentum with Xbox One having sold almost 10 million units to retailers worldwide,” said Xbox UK marketing director Harvey Eagle.

“This momentum is reflected in the UK, particularly over the last three weeks, which is extremely encouraging as we approach the Christmas shopping period. People buy consoles to play the best games, and Xbox One is home to the best games. Halo: The Master Chief Collection is one of the highest rated next-gen console games released, Sunset Overdrive is the highest rated new franchise on any next-gen console and Forza Horizon 2 is the highest rated driving game on any next gen console.

"We have an excellent line up of games to look forward to in 2015, including Quantum Break, Fable Legends and of course Halo 5: Guardians. With some great deals to be had on the high street, now really is the best time to be an Xbox One owner.”

Despite its recent sales success, Xbox One still has some way to go before it topples PS4, which shot past 1m UK sales back in September.

The real challenge for Xbox will be whether it can maintain this recent sales momentum during the weeks when it does not have a major exclusive game launch.

10m shipped, selling more than PS4 over the last 2 weeks in the US -

Xbox One Sales on the Rise

The past few weeks have been incredibly exciting, marked by a series of highly-anticipated game and bundle launches and the most affordable prices yet for Xbox One. We are humbled by the positive response to our new offerings and grateful for the support from our fans.

Yesterday, we celebrated the arrival of the iconic Halo franchise on Xbox One, as Halo: The Master Chief Collection launched to millions of excited fans and an impressive Metacritic score of 89. Sunset Overdrive was recently named by IGN as the “Game of the Month” for October. The new Xbox One bundles, which feature some of this holiday’s most anticipated games including Assassin’s Creed Unity, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, and Sunset Overdrive, hit store shelves with a limited time offer of $50 off any Xbox One of your choice. Starting as low as $349 in the US, the Xbox One is more affordable than ever this holiday season.

The response to this wave of blockbuster game releases and new bundles has been amazing, and sales have skyrocketed since the new price took effect on Nov. 2. Compared to the previous week, Xbox One sales in the US have more than tripled, which is exciting as more and more friends will be playing together this holiday. As we head into the busy holiday season Xbox One led generation 8 console sales in the US for the past two weeks. Shortly, we will have sold in to retailers more than 10 million Xbox One consoles.

Almost one year ago, I had the honor of shaking hands with hundreds of fans at our Xbox One launch in New York City. We have listened to your feedback and have worked hard to deliver hundreds of improvements to Xbox One, celebrated the launch of amazing new games, and sought ways to offer more value for you. As we reach this milestone, I remain awestruck by your passion for games and your support of Xbox One. Thank you for an incredible year.

Microsoft reported Q1 earnings on Thursday, and it's looking pretty good for the company across the board.

The company said that total Xbox console sales were 2.4 million, growing 102%. However, Microsoft didn't specify how many were Xbox 360s and how many were Xbox Ones.

It also noted that the Xbox One was released in 28 new markets.

Xbox Platform revenue increased $104 million or 14%, driven primarily by increased console revenue. We sold in 1.1 million consoles in the fourth quarter, as we drew down channel inventory, compared to 1.0 million consoles during the prior year.

Microsoft’s Xbox One has been the best-selling games console for four weeks in a row, MCV understands.

The machine has benefited from a £30 price cut, while the launch of Titanfall last week caused a surge in console sales of 96 per cent.

But retailers have told MCV that PS4 remains in control, and that Xbox’s recent success has been aided by shortages of Sony’s console.

In fact, a fresh supply of PS4s last weekend caused a 72 per cent rise in sales.

MCV understands that Sony is preparing to release extra stock into the trade for this Friday’s launch of Infamous: Second Son, which is PlayStation’s big hope for the quarter.

http://www.mcvuk.com/news/read/xbox-one ... ol/0129972

The company sold 7.4 million Xbox console units into the retail channel, including 3.9 million Xbox One consoles and 3.5 million Xbox 360 consoles.

-Xbox One was the leading console in the U.S. for the month of December according to NPD Group

-3.5 million Xbox 360 consoles sold

Surface

-Revenue and units more than doubled sequentially with improved Surface RT sales and the introduction of Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2

Gross margin

Launch of Xbox One contributed to gross margin decline

D&C Hardware revenue increased $1.9 billion or 68%, due primarily to $1.2 billion or 54% higher Xbox Platform revenue. Surface revenue was $893 million for the three months ended December 31, 2013. Xbox Platform revenue increased due to the release of Xbox One. We sold 7.4 million Xbox consoles during the second quarter of fiscal 2014, compared with 5.9 million Xbox consoles during the second quarter of fiscal year 2013. Surface revenue increased due to higher number of units sold, including sales of Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2.

D&C Hardware gross margin decreased $351 million or 46%, due to a $2.3 billion or 111% increase in cost of revenue, offset in part by higher revenue. Xbox Platform cost of revenue increased $1.6 billion. Surface cost of revenue was $932 million for the three months ended December 31, 2013. Xbox Platform cost of revenue increased due mainly to higher volumes of consoles sold and additional costs associated with the release of Xbox One. Surface cost of revenue increased with higher volumes sold, including sales of Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2.

@geoffkeighley
Xbox says it won't be updating sales numbers again until Jan 23 w/ earnings announcement. Not sure what that means for NPD numbers.

PS4 and Xbox One posted incredible sales figures in the UK, with Sony coming out on top.

PlayStation 4 has sold 530,000 units in the UK in just five weeks, according to ERA (using Chart-Track data), while Xbox One has sold 364,000 units. It's a significant gap between the two competitors, although both numbers are significantly higher than any previous console launch.

PS4 hardware sales generated £181.8m on the UK High Street, while Xbox One made £144.5m. Together, that means the UK market made over £326m from next-gen console sales.

ERA director general Kim Bayley said, “Games continues to deliver digital sales strongly, but it was disappointing that Xbox One and PS4 came so late in 2013 and then huge demand meant stock sold out quickly. Retailers will be working hard in 2014 to maintain the sales momentum of these two great new pieces of kit.”

That's cleverly worded by Microsoft. Everyone knows Playstation 4 only sold 1 million units in the US so Xbox is the winner!

I weep for the state of the world when people glory in spending £425 on a box that exists largely for Microsoft to capture biometric data that they can sell to advertisers.

I can't speak for everyone else, but I bought mine to play games on.

Shouldn't you have chosen a console that has games, then?

That's what it says.

Completely irrelevant, they sold as many as they had to sell, if they'd put all their stock in the US they would have sold over a million in the US in all likelihood.

It's not irrelevant, some people want to know how many they sold in the US.

What's the problem? Oh right.....

I'd guess the vast majority of that would be in the US, anyway. Something like 600,000 units. Most of the other territories probably had tiny releases.

It's sad how few people seem to get this. At this stage in the console's lifecycle demand outstrips supply. It's entirely the same with the PS4. At this stage it's about who can produce more, and one would assume that would be Sony, given they're a more traditionally hardware focused company. It's swings and roundabouts for those blindly supporting a console. I'm sure the PS4 did sell more in the US, otherwise surely Microsoft would have highlighted US sales in their press release, but Microsoft are supplying 13 countries, and so far the PS4 is available in two(?). There's very little to read into anything, but there are already some amusing reactions from 'supporters' ;).

Fairly sure Canada has PS4s too. Not just the US. Sale report said they sold 1 million in NA but I'm not sure if that includes Mexico.

This. Let's say both Sony and MS had the same amount of consoles for launch. Sony offered up all of those consoles to North America/Canada, whereas MS distributed them amongst 13 territories. And both sold out.

Doesn't mean gooseberry fool.

We'll see how they're selling 6 months to a year down the line.

Does every console really need a separate thread to track how they're selling
