PostXbox Profiles
by Moggy » Tue Jan 05, 2010 11:46 am

My girlfriends brother got her an Xbox for Christmas (flash git that he is). She now has her Xbox in the bedroom (on a crappy TV) while mine is in pride of place in the living room (on nice big HDTV).

One trouble we seem to have is that it appears you cannot have your profile on more than one Xbox at any one time. She recovered her profile to her new Xbox and now cannot use the one on my Xbox. Is this right or have we done something wrong? I am assuming she can just recover her profile back to my Xbox if she wants to play upstairs but this seems a bit of a pain in the ass!

On a related note, is there any easy way for her to get her game saves from my Xbox to her new one? I have a 120gb hard drive and she has a 20gb one if that makes any difference. Obviously I don’t want to risk losing any of my game saves!

I believe you can only have one "active" version of your profile. Guess it's something to do with DRM for stuff purchased on XBLM. I think the recommended way round it is to keep your profile on a memory unit, and plug it into whichever console you want to use. The memory unit's also the easiest way of shifting saved games around. It's a bit of a faff, whichever way you look at it.

I thought that might be the case. Its probably just as easy (and a lot cheaper!) for her to carry her Xbox up or downstairs when she wants to as the cables can be left attached to both TVs.

Unless she wants to buy a memory unit but I will leave that up to her!

to get her saves you would need a memory unit to transfer the save across.

I have the same set-up as you and it's super convenient to just move the memory card around, you can load your profile straight from the card, you don't have to copy it on to the machine or anything.

I just have a 64MB one, I've never needed anything any bigger though I think you can get 256 and 512 MB ones now.

I got it from HMV for £7.99 about three years ago, and it looks like they cost more than that now, which is a shame.

Yeah, if you're shunting profiles around on a regular basis, a memory card is a must have.

Cheers guys! I have passed the message on so she will need to invest in a memory unit if she wants her saves and easy access to her profile.

As a slight aside, if I saved my profile on a memory unit, would the Sky Player work on the other Xbox (so she could watch crap programmes in the bedroom on the Xbox and leave me to the footy!)? I seem to remember it registers a console rather than a profile but am not 100%.

You can always unclip the hard drive and plug it in upstairs or downstairs if you don't need to use both profiles on the same machine at the same time.
