i think MS would rather have the gaming world talking native 4k over checkerboard.

personally. playing the stunning Horizon and Uncharted on Pro, i can't imagine 4k native games being noticeably different on X and i'll probably only know there's a difference when DF tell me.
but we shall see soon enough.

I agree. It would damage their USP if it used checkerboarding unless absolutely required for 30fps. I also imagine it must be simpler for developers if, more or less, Xbox One fidelity games can be ported over to One X / 4k / 30fps+ quite simply - must be a bit of nightmare at the moment for developers with five current standards in the console sphere.

Could be a perfect storm for X1X, 4K Tv's are now very affordable and despite pretty much everyone saying it's not gonna sell at that price, it's off to a good start.

The Xbox One X probably isn't for you. Unless you have a really big 4K TV: https://www.theverge.com/2017/8/25/1620 ... escom-2017

The Xbox One X is powerful, yes, but from the evidence on display at Gamescom that power is largely going toward rendering Xbox One-level graphics in 4K resolution. And to be honest, I think that’s a waste.

Funny coincidence as we were just discussing this in here.

Microsoft's Xbox One X is still a tough sell. Being the most powerful console ever isn't enough: https://www.engadget.com/2017/08/24/mic ... -gamescom/

It's really not getting much positive press whatsoever. But then, neither did the Switch...though I think that was even more downbeat.

I wish that both the OX and the Pro placed a lot more focus on ramping up processing performance and 1080p picture quality rather than targeting 4K. It feels like both machines are aiming for a pretty small sector of the market in the hope that the mass market will catch up at some point.

I think this is coming at the right time for the market MS is targeting, as 4K TVs are becoming more common and are a lot more affordable now, and Xbox fans have had generally worse performing multiplatform games so far this gen so many of them are ready and willing to upgrade. There are of course benefits to the Xbox One X even if you're stuck on a 1080p TV, such as system wide super sampling, faster loading, games being able to hit their maximum frame rates and resolutions where the older Xbox One would falter, and there are higher quality assets in some cases too etc.

One thing I may start doing just for fun is renting the same game on both PS4 and Xbox just so I can test them both and see what the differences are and if I've completely wasted almost £800 by buying a Pro and OX.

This may backfire and give me immense buyers remorse but strawberry float it I'd have only wasted it on cake anyway so never mind :toot: :toot: :toot: .

I trust you'll be using two fifty-five inch 4K HDR screens (side-by-side) for the optimal comparison, Peter? Dat commitment :datass: .

Errr, just to make it fair I'll be using an LG from 2011 :shifty: .
I have a larger LG set from 2012 as well but the brightness is strawberry floated and it's like playing everything at about 3 in the morning :fp: .

I'm planning to buy a new TV in either the black friday sales or early next year as I'm after a QLED or OLED but I'm unwilling to pay more than £1200 as I'm a cheap bastard.

i couldn't see much difference (if any) between the same games running on PS4/X1, I'm assuming I'll not notice much between Pro/X1X.

the difference for me was that my 4K TV made the same games running on X1S noticeably better than those on X1. while some PS4 games looked worse (Far Cry Primal/Everbody's Gone To The Rapture) on Pro through the same TV.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digit ... er-ps4-pro

Comparison is based on X1X native 4K, PS4 Pro 4K CB, PC highest settings:

Image

HDR display support for more vibrant and accurate color representation technology
Spatial audio support, including Dolby Atmos, for true 3D audio
Enhanced texture resolution for Lara Croft, NPCs, and environments, leveraging additional memory offered by the Xbox One X
Improved anti-aliasing for immersive realistic details
Improved volumetric lights
Improved reflections
Increased use of TresFx hair physics
Enhanced foliage
Upgraded polygonal detail
Amplified texture filtering

4K resolution is native on Xbox One X while PS4 Pro uses checkerboard rendering; the biggest difference can be probably found in the enriched visuals mode, though, since Xbox One X manages to keep a full 4K pixel count through temporal reprojection while PS4 Pro has to dial down the resolution to 1080P.

Finally, the high frame rate mode also holds up better on Xbox One X: whereas during the final chapter PS4 Pro’s version of Rise of the Tomb Raider hovered around 50fps or so, on Xbox One X frame rate is pretty much locked at 60fps even in these more chaotic sections of the game.

Eurogamer wrote:Microsoft discontinued the original Xbox One after it released the Xbox One S, it has confirmed.

The Xbox One S, which launched in August 2016, effectively replaced the original Xbox One. Any you see available to buy will be from shops clearing stock or second hand.

"As is typical for the console industry, we stopped manufacturing the original Xbox One when we introduced Xbox One S," a Microsoft spokesperson told Eurogamer.

It means the original Xbox One was discontinued two years and nine months after it came out in November 2013.

The Xbox One has struggled in the face of stiff competition from Sony's PlayStation 4 and now the Nintendo Switch, with analysts reporting the Xbox One has sold less than half the 63.3m sales of the PS4.

The console hit the wild with an impressive number of launch titles, but no exclusive killer apps. Microsoft-published games such as Crimson Dragon, Dead Rising 3, Forza 5, Killer Instinct and Ryse: Son of Rome all failed to convince the early adopter audience to go with the Xbox One instead of the PS4, which came out at the same time.

Even before the Xbox One launched, Microsoft was criticised for the forced inclusion of the much-maligned Kinect motion sensor (which bumped up the price), as well as its ill-advised policies around game authentication and pre-owned titles. It didn't help that the console was underpowered compared to the PS4.

Now, with the troubled Xbox One launch behind it, Microsoft hopes to challenge Sony once again with eye-catching Xbox One S bundles and the more powerful Xbox One X, which is due for release in November.

I must be missing the point of this piece of news. Impressive how they've managed to pad out what is a 2 line piece of information into such a long article...

I'm also not sure I see a problem with them stopping making the older version.
The S is a better console all round and cheaper to manufacture so it seems like a logical decision.

Isn't that really old news?

In other news I have to buy a £40 adapter to use my Kinect on the £450 Xbox One X :fp: Microsoft are such a bag of dicks, why don't they just use USB connectors and protocols instead of strawberry floating their customers in the ass constantly.

Is it the same connector that you needed for the Xbox One S? They did a program where if you registered both the consoles and the kinect to your Microsoft account they'd send you the adapter for free - If there's enough bad press they might do it again for the X (or they might be doing it regardless)

(the xbox one S adapter program ended in March, so maybe we need to kick up a fuss and see if they do another one...)

I'm not sure what the S uses as I held off from upgrading to that one and I'm still using the POS OG version. Hopefully they do that for the X too, although I will probably be one of the only people who needs one
