Back compat seems to be high on the agenda (especially with this 'Netflix' style games service they've been touting). I'm going to take a bit of a punt and say there will be a 360 emulator built-in (wishful thinking, perhaps).

They've already said Scorpio will support the same Xbox 360 games that the current Xboxone supports. Or are you talking about something else entirely?

It's just pure speculation based on how they seem to pushing back compat to the fore again. It could be something they've built in this time (after all, the 360 could play all original Xbox games). Given how popular this seems to be with the public, it might be another PR success for MS (which would make a change from the Xbox One launch).

Um... thats oddly confusing, the OS has the emulator in it, no idea what Built in means. You realise that every game that is back compat has to be greenlit by the original dev's? Because they licenced the game to 360 not Xbox One, it's also the reason certain racing games take a while to tie up the various deals and advertising. They can't put a magic 360 chip in and run the games verbatim because of licensing issues and things like companies having remasters.

Also, the X1 OS emulator runs the games better than 360 and they'll run better again on Scorpio. I can't tell if you don't know what you're talking about or not. Btw 360 ran a select number
Of OG Xbox games not all. Xbox One runs about 350+ 360 games and at a higher frame rate.

Could 360 games that run better on Xbox One run even better on Scorpio or are the improvements down to the emulator which will be the same on both*?

*I have no idea how this stuff works.

No it couldn't. Much like the Xbone, it could only play certain titles.

Also performance varied wildly, unlike on XB1, as the emulating was done on a game by game basis.

Emulator was updated with each game and with it most problems on earlier back compat games more or less vanished, even GTA IV had a patch from rockstar recently. Halo Reach was unplayable when it first arrived, runs perfect now.

We are talking about the Xbox 360 running (original) Xbox games.

There's no need here for you to jump in to defend the Xbox One BC capabilities. ;)

Is there anything stopping Xbox One from running original Xbox games? Just just nerd to emulate the Xbox 360 emulator, right?

Licensing.
Microsoft's original deal with Nvidia for the Xbox wasn't great from their point of view and they had to pay Nvidia a fee to run Xbox games on the 360. On top of that their emulator had to be built to work around technology Nvidia had patented for their GPUs which is why performance differed so much between games. It's incredibly hard to work around which the near non existent state of Xbox emulation on PC shows.

Also, the original Xbox Live service has been shutdown.

Looks like I may have made a mistake with 360 and OG back compat

But the same still stands about my speculation for Scorpio functionality. It would be another score for MS if it were to happen.

I seem to remember the fat PS3 having near total PS2 compatibility. Would be great going forward if a company (Sony or MS) could say that any Xbox / PS game will work on thier latest console (licensing issues aside).

As Bear said, it is not really feasible for them to offer Xbox compatibility anymore.

MS could work on full 360 compatibility but it would only add extra cost to the Scorpio console. Far more likely they will continue with the BC updates as they are doing now.

As I've never played any xbone games the ability to play all the games I've missed in an enhanced state is great news.
They will all be available via Boomerang so it should be pretty easy to get quite a lot of gaming right away.

The backwards compatibility stuff is great but I'd love an updated version of Spelunky. The 360 version was excellent once but it's not up to scratch anymore.

The original PS3 sold in the US did, it had extra hardware for this. I think the launch PS3 in the UK only had software emulation though. Adding hardware for emulation just adds cost though.

The problem with backwards compatibility is that most of the time, the games can only be enhanced based on the source material, unless someone is going to spend time making changes. A good example of this is Dishonoured and Dead Rising - the definitive versions felt just like old games (graphically) to me. Maybe if you run the "new" version side by side with the old version I'd see the difference.

Kind of odd how the PS3/Slim can play 98% of PlayStation 1 titles (including demo discs) but PS2 compatibility was all over the place.

I still don't understand why current-gen console's don't play CDs.

I'm mainly just thinking of the exclusive stuff like halo 5, Halo Wars, Gears and the Forza games which I expect will get Scorpio treatments.
I may also try Destiny 2 just to see how they use the extra grunt on a franchise that by design needs to be a consistent experience for all.
