Perhaps a wee bit harsh, Moggy! The X is a beast of a machine and what we've seen hasn't really demonstrated the potential. If developers were to utilise that power, the games would look and move far better than on other consoles. I suspect that the infamous "nobody gets left behind" quote is a nice phrase rather than a strict rule; rather like in the days when games would appear on both the Spectrum and the Amiga or the Master System and the Mega Drive... you can play the "same" game but there is no doubting which offers the better experience.

The cost aspect, whilst a reasonable argument, doesn't really stand as a blocking point in the longer term. All new machines cost more and, realistically, on that basis we could suggest that it wasn't worth getting an XBO or a PS4 over the previous gen consoles. Maybe it was a valid point in the first six months or so after launch but, in time, the games showcase the benefits of the newer machines.

About that...

What an odd decision if true given that PSVR seems to be doing pretty well and the X could manage VR easily.

Microsoft have shifted their attention towards Mixed Reality, which they're partnering on with HP, Acer, Asus, Dell and Lenovo.

The Xbone and PS4 played games that weren't available on 360 and PS4. That's the difference.

If XboneX and PS4Pro have exclusive games, then the machines have a point. Otherwise it's £100s extra for something that just makes things a little prettier.

My main issue is that we're in uncharted waters regarding the lifespan of these consoles. We've never seen a mid-term re-release of a console incorporate anything but aesthetic differences (to my knowledge) so the question now is how long are MS and Sony planning on supporting these consoles? The PS Pro is all well and good but it's essentially a slight update and certainly not enough to delay the next generation by much. Does this mean that, in 5 years time* Sony will be releasing a more powerful and undoubtedly cheaper PS5 while Xbox owners are left behind with their Xbonx? Is that risk worth £450 at this point?

*we'll be walking round a zoo.

We're bound to get £350 PS5 and Xbox Two in 2020 anyway.

The launch games for the XBO and PS4 rarely demonstrated technical or gameplay style improvements over last gen titles. In time, developers learn to exploit the new technology and I'm sure that'll happen with the Pro and the X. I feel that both manufacturers will, over time, work to better demonstrate the benefits of the newer machines in a bid to create a competitive edge and garner attention. In the longer term, and particularly as the production costs are lowered, I could see the two "boosted" machines becoming the standard.

Yep, the proper next gen will be coming in the next 3 years or so, which will make these upgrades even more pointless.

The idea of upgrades as per the smartphone market and getting rid of generations isn’t a bad one but that’s not what this is at the moment as they are saying no exclusive XboneX/PS4Pro games.

That might change of course, but at the moment I can’t see the point of them.

They might not have had massive improvements over the previous gen, but they had exclusive games. It was a new generation with games that either couldn’t be played on the previous generation or at least were not made available on it.

This is not the same thing under the current strategy of “nobody left behind”.

As I've said before, there has to be a point where publishers start releasing games that just can't run on the old hardware, the same thing happens to PC.

PS5 and Xbox Two will be the answer to that (complete with Zen CPU and Vega GPU).

I was right about Scorpio's official name having "One" in it and was ridiculed for it, and I'm right about this.

I'm on the fence about getting one of these now. If it came with the elite controller then I would have jumped in on day one.

I only have a 720p (input) TV so I won't get the benefit of the higher output resolutions. It's a lot of money for a faster operating system, storage and load times. It doesn't even look like a premium device (the S looks more expensive to me when they're side by side)

Personally I don't place too much stock in that soundbite. It was a year ago... things change. It would be crazy - for both Sony and Microsoft - to realise these machines and the additional power is not utilised. Over the course of the next year I can see the "boosted" machines starting to take more of a leading role in terms of how they're positioned. Games will start to be showcased on the more powerful machines.. but you will still be able to play a "not quite as good" version on the older machines.

Marvellous.
Did they look at the already high price of entry for VR and decide they didn't want to get involved with those peasants?
PSVR with camera and remotes is about £450 so I can't wait to see what Mixed Reality costs as it's bound to be way more expensive.

The base level ($399 with a pair of controllers) headsets are VR headsets. All mixed reality means is that Microsofts long term belief is that AR and VR will essentially converge.

Here’s a list of games that run at 4K on Xbox One X

Yesterday, Microsoft revealed the Xbox One X, the most powerful console ever created. Since its launch, the PlayStation 4 Pro has struggled to reach the 4K resolution with only a handful of titles supporting it on Sony’s console. However, Microsoft blew expectations out of the water when they announced dozens of 4K games for Project Scorpio…we mean Xbox One X. Here’s a list of all games that we know are going to be 4K. From our understanding, the games mentioned below—barring any changes—will run at 3840 by 2160 pixels (4K UHD) on Xbox One X.

Anthem
Ashen
Ark: Survival Evolved
The Artful Escape
Assassin’s Creed Origins
Astroneer
Battlerite
Black Desert
Brawlout
Chess Ultra
Conan Exiles
Crackdown 3
Dark and Light
The Darwin Project
Dead Rising 4
Deep Rock Galactic
Dishonored 2
Dovetail Games Euro Fishing
Doom
Dragon Ball Fighter Z
Dunk Lords
The Elder Scrolls Online
Everspace
Fable Fortune
Fallout 4
Farming Simulator 17
Final Fantasy XV
For Honor
Forza Horizon 3
Forza Motorsport 7
Gears of War 4
Ghost Recon Wildlands
Halo Wars 2
Hello Neighbor
Hitman
Homefront: The Revolution
Injustice 2
Killer Instinct
Killing Floor 2
The Last Night
Madden NFL 18
Mantis Burn Racing
Metro Exodus
Middle-earth: Shadow of War
Minecraft
Minion Masters: Forced to Duel
Need for Speed Payback
Observer
Ooblets
Ori and the Will of the Wisps
Osiris: New Dawn
Outlast 2
Paladins
Path of Exile
PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds
Portal Knights
Raiders of the Broken Planet
ReCore
Resident Evil 7
Rime
Riverbond
Robocraft Infinity
Rocket League
Sea of Thieves
Shift
Skyrim: Special Edition
Slime Rancher
State of Decay 2
Strange Brigade
Super Lucky’s Tale
Superhot
Surviving Mars
The Surge
Titanfall 2
Unruly Heroes
Warhammer: Vermintide
We Happy Few
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
World of Tanks

We would include games like Call of Duty: WWII, Code Vein, Destiny 2, Far Cry 5 and Star Wars: Battlefront II but the developers haven’t revealed details about the resolution. Given the fact that even a game like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt can run at 4K on Xbox One X, Call of Duty: WWII, Destiny 2 and others should also run at 4K on the console. It’s surprising how in a day Microsoft has over 60 confirmed 4K games for Xbox One X. If we go with some of the rumored titles, then that number approaches 100. The Xbox One X is definitely the ultimate console and absolutely blows Sony’s attempt away!

Not sure about all of them running at Native 4K but we shall see.

Blimey... all those titles will run at 4K? That is pretty impressive and MS needs to make far more of a song and dance about this. The general perception seems to be "Xbox One X has no gaemz!" but it could be that tons of stuff will run in this high resolution from launch.

AC Origins looked amazing on Xbox One X at a 1080p stream of a game running in 4K, would have been interesting to see it running side by side with the none 4K version, but I can understand why they've not done that.

I would also be surprised if these are all Native 4k and 30 / 60 fps but if so...

The amount of money you would have to spank to get a PC running 4k 30 or 60 fps with high to ultra settings would be a fair chunk more than £450.
