Didn't EA already confirm the Next Box will launch in 2013?

I expect to see one next E3 tbh.

Hmm, 360's release was the death knell for the original Xbox.

Personally I believe killing support for a last-gen format is the best thing to do. Sony supported the PS2 somewhat because they already a massive install base and so it made sense to release games like GT4 and God of War 2 on it. Besides that some of the games, including those, were too far along the development cycle to refer development to the PS3.

It doesn't mean XBOX360 couldn't have a long-tail, just do what Sony did and release the console in new territories at a lower price. It worked a treat for the PS2. That way westerners get great new content on a next-gen platform and those smaller, less equipped markets get last-gen at great prices.

The xobx didn't sell that well though. The gamecube had like 20 millions sales and the xbox was only a few millions about that, the ps2 has a good 100 million over them. There are too many xbox 360 users for people to just kill the console off.

The main reason MS rushed out the 360 and subsequently killed off the original Xbox was that they had very little control over the cost of the Xbox's individual components. AFAIK the GPU deal with Nvidia was losing them a massive amount of money. They have complete control over the 360 and as time passes it is getting cheaper to manufacture so I don't think it will be dumped in the same manner.

I think coolie is spot on about the 360 eventually becoming Microsoft's cheap, entry-level console in untapped and developing territories.

The xbox lost them money right the way through due to them cocking it up too, they didn't have a reducing cost model even though they had to reduce the price.

[edit] Shminkey said it better above.

The 360 has got cheaper and cheaper for them so it makes sense to support it.

Kinnect will have already had a good run by E3 2012 and I don't think the machine will come out in 2012 even if it is announced at E3 unless they move Halo 4 onto it as why would they have such an important game on a system they are just about to upgrade? I'm really looking forward to the next wave of machines by Microsoft and Sony to see if either go down the power route so we can see just how much bang for buck is achievable but I think Halo 4 holds the key for Microsoft.
I agree that the machine won't be killed off like the first xbox and I have a feeling they will keep producing them with hardware revisions for at least another 5 years.

MS didn't announce the Xbox 360 until 6 months before launch, if my memory serves me right.

Built using CryEngine 3, it'll apparently focus on branching paths, exploration and sandbox gameplay.

That doesn't sound like Timesplitters. Don't ruin it!

Ugh, it really doesn't. I don't get the point of digging up an established IP if you're going to have a whole new team behind it (yes, I know some of the old team are at Crytek) and go in a whole new direction. Might as well develop it as a new series.

It's like a reboot that no one wants.

At least the MS conference will be worth watching next year. Helps explain why this year's was so bad.

Nah, they'll follow Nintendo's lead and spend the whole conference revealing the new controller. Which, as this console will probably keep using Kinect, is nothing.

I hope that any reveal is not clouded by the fog of console war that are bullshots and unreal-time footages.

I'd be happy with the exact same controller as 360 but with micro-USB charging instead of AA batteries.

I have heard rumblings that Halo 4 will be a launch game for the Nextbox. So E3 next year reveal and then release next Christmas?

Seems plausible.

This would indicate we'll see no in-game Halo 4 footage for another 12 months though, which is an awfully long time. :(
