Fair enough! Well I nailed mission 3 (evacuating a VIP) so perhaps I am getting the hang of it. Felt good!

Anyone got any tips?

Get as many rookies promoted as you can, as soon as possible - injured soldiers take ages to heal so you'll need a backup squad (or two).

Also, bear in mind the game is difficult, don't expect every mission to go well.

Awesome thanks. I'm definitely getting better but it's amazing how quickly a mission goes to gooseberry fool if you make one mistake!

I played a little bit of XCOM on the Vita the other day, and it holds up incredibly well. Runs at a crawl, but that hasn't stopped me for enjoying it.

Except for when you move your last soldier and run into a group of enemies, who then swarm around you before their turn even starts

The fight against ADVENT continues when additional resistance factions form in order to eliminate the alien threat on Earth. In response, a new enemy, known as the “Chosen,” emerges with one goal: recapture the Commander. This expansion to the 2016 award-winning strategy game of the year includes new Hero classes to counter the “Chosen”, new enemies, missions, environments and increased depth in strategic gameplay. Requires XCOM 2 to play.

Looks interesting, hopefully it'll have a similar amount of extra content as the original games Enemy Within expansion did.

So I've been giving this a go at the Standard / Veteran difficulty for a about a week now. I've put in 35hrs into it. Restarted 4 times. My goodness, THIS. IS. HARD. Usually I get to a certain point, get introduced to a new enemy type, they decimate my squad and I start again. For instance, on my most recent restart, I was balancing the books, making good progress with my research, etc. and then I met Mutons for the first time. I had three Cpl. Rangers in my squad at the time, so sent them in to blade attack. It killed the first one instantly. I shot its armour stat down, then send another one in to blade insta-kill and it deflected and killed my soldier again. There was no warning. No way to prepare a strategy on the fly. Lost two of my most promoted soldiers and a third quickly after. I managed to get a lowly rookie out of the mission and persevered up to the Black Site mission.

When I got to the first Black Site, I thought I could take it on as I had tier 2 armour and guns but this time around the game chucks in some of those teleporting enemies and the armoured ADVENT soldiers - WTF? These weren't there last time round when I got to this point... the enemies scaled up! Again... no warning.

I felt with XCOM (on the 360) you could be reactive. A new element was introduced and you could formulate a strategy to cope with it and it felt good doing so. I Ironman-ed the game first go on standard difficulty. It felt challenging but fair. This one seemingly wants you to fail a few times along the way. However, with each go taking me 8 hours to get back up to the point I got mulched at, I may just play on Rookie difficulty until all of the game's mechanics are known to me.

Don't melee attack mutons or berserkers unless you really have no other option available, snipe those feckers from afar.

So been playing this for the first time today, having loved the other installments. And I'm playing blind knowing nothing but the general guerilla warfare premise.

I have had the toughest time so far! I did the usual naming all 10 peeps after real life friends and decorate their armour and that for over an hour. Then I become so attached that no one is allowed to die. Ever. And I'm playing ironman style.

I'm doing okay until the first terror mission which I'm ill-equipped for. I creep around killing, getting damaged and rescuing people. Get 4/6, double turn my gf over to get a dude who ends up being faceless, which I didnt know was a thing, as more units appear. I then have my two mates roll incredibly on low odds to finish it off. The new units then flank her and she is down to two health and again manage to flank and wipe them all out...just.

Then I go on to do the first blacksite. I set up an ambush for 5v5 and turn it to 3v5 immediately which feels epic, but two stun guys get very close to my snipers. Clear house and the turret, hack the turret on the other end and position ready by the doors for the objective.

A robo dude turns up, blows two of my guys up immediately and one gets killed (well it didnt say anything so I figured he just got critically wounded). Oh and the turret hacks back against me. I somehow manage to get the upper hand, have my 1st sniper pick up my fallen friend and lug him towards evac. Fight and kill the guards at the back as he makes a hero carry and get them to jump home. We take the objective, reinforcements show and we wipe them out. Then more reinforcements show and we cant reach evac before they land as you cant go through the window we are using. This one ends up being a long protracted 3v3 affair as the guys keep overwatching and we can't get good line of sight, low on ammo and all low on health. We somehow break the deadlock and I ship my final 3 home, only to find my earlier friend was indeed dead the whole time.

Close with a sombre journey home and then all my troops on their knees as all of them were extremely wounded.

Emotionally drained to say the least!

And made the finale tonight. Absolute slog. My crew just got thinned out as the level progressed, a friend dying off in each major encounter. In the end, the odds were insurmountable and I lost the fight.

I'll have to load it up again some time next week and finish the final level but need to mourn my crew before then...

I've haven't played this one but in the last X:COM you could view a memorial of your fallen troops to the sound of bagpipes, gets you right in the feels :(

I do write Eulogies for fallen comrades. But...

you don't return to the Avenger when you fail the final mission. You either reload the save or quit, so can't write eulogies

I've been playing this for a week and was finding it really tough and was considering giving up, but I decided to try watching someone play it on YouTube and got a few pointers and doing much better than last time. Simple things really, like consistently using grenades to destroy their cover if you can't flank them, for example. I was more using them for group damage. I still reload saves like a bastard, but don't need to quite as much.

Playing War of the Chosen.

Ok. I hate this game and I love this game.

I hate this game as it stresses me the strawberry float out but I love it because that stress leads to procedural narratives in almost every mission. On one mission we were surrounded by zombies, out of moves and the last soldier only made it to the evac point because his best friend inspired him. On another, we were out manoeuvred and outgunned, and one rookie distracted a horde while two veterans made good their escape.

Those missons were filled with "Oh for strawberry float's sake..." moments for sure, but it's the narrative sense of drama that stays with you. I can't remember a single mission in the original XCOM2 that was half as tense, simply because this time I wanted my men to make it out, or was intent on getting that cache of materials. They've fiddled with the mechanics in a way that makes every moment to moment decision more meaningful.

The Chosen are good too I suppose, in a Nemesis-lite sort of system.

I still hate it, but I love it too.

I can't wait to eventually get this and name my initial batch of troops after all the brave heroes in Predator and Aliens. And watch them all die.

What a difference a day makes. Last night's session was a complete bust, partially due to my inexperience with the game's crushing difficulty and partially due to poor mission design.

The first relates to the Black Site missions. These were always hard, but now the Chosen show up too. I wiped (and reloaded) 4 times before managing to scrape through, then reloaded again to save all my guys. By the end (this took about an hour and a half) I felt utterly frustrated and completely drained.

Secondly, I did a Guerilla Op to destroy a comms relay. Fine. I did, and the timer stopped. The "Neutralise All Enemies" objective remained however, and persisted long after all the aliens were dead. Why? Because this map included the Lost who constantly spawn. I killed swarm after swarm and the objective wouldn't complete. I went online, read that apparently one "permanent" Lost might have spawned somewhere else on the map and that was why the objective wasn't firing. So I spent about 20 minutes scouting the (giant, multi-story) map trying to find one enemy whilst also fighting off infinitely respawning enemies that look exactly the same as the enemy I was trying, and failing to find.

In the end I reloaded the whole thing. Over 2 and a half hours with the game and I achieved next to nothing except a headache.

This has been enhanced for Xbox One X btw.

In other news, why is this game so f**king hard? I'm playing on normal and its ridiculous. One difficulty spike was switching a PC off or something on a train so you only have so many turns or its too late. The amount of enemies just to get the train was hard enough but when you switch if off a heap of other enemies come at you.

I don't remember those aliens being stupidly powerful in the previous games. Not only can they bring soldiers back from the dead, they can mind control my own players or panic them making me not able to use them for a round or 2. I had one stage where I literally couldn't do anything cos 2 were mind controlled and the other 2 were panicked. I mean, F*CK OFF!

I barely got out with 3 alive... Poor Francis.
