My tips for levelling up would be to make sure you take on monsters that are slightly above you in level (EXP seems to scale based on the relative level between you and the enemy), use blade combos to build your chain attacks and then make sure you finish the enemy using your chain attack as this gives a multiplier to the amount of EXP you receive. Oh and there are also accessories you can equip which increase experience received as well.

Oh, so I should be saving my chain attacks until it will finish the enemy off?

I think that's the best idea. You get an overkill bonus which might (and I'm guessing here) be linked to weapon points or bonus exp.

I think it's linked to both, but yes it definitely boosts EXP.

I try to save my chain attack until the enemy has basically no HP left - basically after they've killed it then every attack your blades do during the combo increases the bonus % - if you've added several orbs to the enemy using combos then you can easily get a 200-300% bonus!

Plus, if you're attacking a group then overkill damages the other enemies.

Thanks to an easy grinding spot in the upper levels of Mor Ardain I managed to get my party up to around 60 before I wrapped up chapter 7. The Chain Attack Kills definitely helped speed the process.

What's the best way of seeing an enemy's weakness? Do you need to attack with different elements until you use the right one before it shows up next to the enemy's name at the top of the screen?

Don't think so, If it has a weakness then the symbol appears in the health bar. Maybe not all enemies have a weakness?

Elemental orbs-is this right-

If I get to level 3 with a final fire attack in a blades combo, the enemy will gain an elemental orb (where do I see this by the way? I haven’t observed them yet) and have a resistance to all future fire attacks until I break it with a chain combo? And the best way to break it is use an opposite element special, eg water for fire, in a chain combo?

Yes - completing a blade combo will attach an orb to the targeted enemy. The element of the orb will be determined by the element of the last blade used in the combo. The orbs appear as balls which float around the enemy (red for fire, blue for water etc.)

You can burst the orbs during a chain attack, multiple hits are required to burst an orb but you do double damage if you attack using the opposite element to the orb. It gets slightly more complicated once you have multiple orbs on an enemy: attacks will always target an orb of opposing element (if one exists) otherwise it is random as to which orb an attack will target. Basically you should always try to attack using opposing elements where possible.

If you manage to burst an orb then you get to do another round of attacks, you can keep this going for as many orbs as you are able to burst.

I only got a handle on the orb stuff recently, I wsnt sure what put them there as sometimes Id do the chain attack and there would be none, sometimes there would, the type didnt match, it was a bit confusing. But I love it when you figure stuff out in this game and something clicks.

Great, thanks.

Basically, combat is all about building up attacks and doing things in the right order isn't it? I think I'm finally getting my head round it.

I'm still unsure with how bonus exp accumulates? Is it story related? Because when I was grinding my party up several levels I didn't get any.

As far as I know it accumulates from everything, story missions, side quests, merc missions. All you need to do is rest at an inn to cash it all in. It could be that you just got unlucky and the bonus XP you got wasnt enough to make anyone level up?

Ah so it's tied activities rather than just beating up monsters? That makes a bit more sense then, because I went up around 5 or 6 levels didn't receive anything >,>

This game when I’m alone:

> big battles with fire and lightening
> powerful speeches and life lessons on fighting with honour and virtue
> running through wonderfully crafted works and towns to epic musical score

This game when other people are in the room:

> anime boobs all over the place
> gratuitous shots of Pyra’s ass
> blushy-crushy.....

Have literally started pausing and waiting to be alone, the risk is too great.

Haha, I feel your pain Tomous, although I think the problem is that a lot of the things in the second list actually occur at the same time as those in the first list.

I was playing some of this last night and there were a couple of "powerful speech" type moments, both of which were somewhat undercut by some dubious camera shots. At one point the camera literally just hung there looking at Pyra's ass - ostensibly to show her clenching her fists but we all know what the director of that scene was really thinking! Shortly after this was another moving scene, in the middle of which they choose to have a shot of Mythra making a gesture with her hands which is basically an excuse to linger on her chest for a long time. :fp:

It's a brilliant game, but it would gain plenty by toning down the anime bullshit.

It is pretty gratuitous at times but I cant say I pay much attention to it, maybe Im just desensitised after 67 hours of it.....

Oh indeed, it doesn't put me off too much - it's just slightly embarrassing to play if anyone else is going to catch a glimpse of it!

I'm up to 75 hours now, just completed Chapter 5. I'm enjoying the gameplay so much but all my meandering and following up on every side quest has resulted in my team being so overpowered now that the story itself is providing very little challenge. I think the final boss on Chapter 5 was about level 40, my lowest levelled character is 58 :fp:

I have some side quests ont he docket that I cant clear for various reason, I plowed through chapter 7 without doing any side stuff really, Im gonna focus on some more side stuff now, especially any blade related stuff.

Yeah I think I need to do the opposite to you Rax - focus on the main story for a bit!

I think I just found the battle system so enjoyable that I spent a large amount of time just fighting as much as I could, particularly as most of my previous experience with JRPGs had been with old school turn based stuff. I also like how even near the start you can wander off into areas that were populated with much stronger enemies - that was like a red rag to a bull for me, "what you want to put me off going in there because those guys are 10 levels above me? We'll see about that!"
