I've also spent quite a large chunk of time arsing about on side quests and general exploration so I get the impression my characters might be slightly above the level expected for this stage of the game!

it was the same for me, though i think that was due to the inn system making level grinding so much easier

Just saved my game for the first time in a while - I'm now at 57hrs and still on chapter 4!

I think I need to push the actual story forward a bit more now as I'm hitting some road blocks in side quests where I need additional field skills that don't seem to be provided by any of my blades - I notice a few of my blades have got skills which are apparently unique to them, is this a common thing?

Yeah, Chapter 5 has really opened out some of the field skills so I'm having less issues with not having the right blades.

43 hours in and mid point in chapter 5. Think Rex is around level 43. Still so much to do.

Early stages into chapter 4 and only just learned you can switch main party members to control ">,> I would have stuck with Nia much earlier if I knew this.

Okay cool. I need to bond with some more core crystals really - I've built up quite a collection! Is there a limit to how many blades you can bond with - just wondering whether I need to get shot of some of these crystals or if it's worth bonding with all of them?

You can? How? Can you change mid-battle?

I've never switched from Rex but I assume you just change the party order? Don't think you can switch mid battle.

You can't change mid battle. Out of battle though, just go to the menu, the characters section, then press X to bring up the party order. You can change the party order there, whoever's in slot 1 you'll play as.

yeah theres a limit to how many blades you can have, but you can increase the limit and part ways with any common blades you dont need

I’m one chapter in and feel a little bit overwhelmed with the combat and blades. What should I be focusing on getting to grips with now? It’s putting me off diving back in at the moment.

How many characters in your party?

Only 3 I think.

Ok. First thing, only focus on Pyra as Rex's blade and Drormach for Nia. It's worth upgrading their weapon skills for Topple (Rex) and Break (Nia).

In combat you have two gauges, cool down ones on X, Y and B which are your driver arts and a charge up on A (which is your special and has 3 or 4 levels). You will automatically hit the enemy in 3 hit bursts and do some damage. This will slowly charge up your special. But, hitting one of the other face buttons just after an auto hit will trigger that driver art and if you get the timing right a blue flash will occur and your specials bar will go up much quicker.

With regards specials, what you're aiming for is a set of I, II and III that link across the chart that appears in the top right corner after you trigger the first one. An ideal set to concentrate on is Fire followed by Water followed by Fire. This means Rex doing level 1, Nia level 2 and Rex on 3. Each level needs to trigger before the gauge at the top of the screen runs down. If it does, you're back to level 1. Triggering a special resets your specials gauge.

In order to determine if Nia can do a level 2 then look at her portrait that'll appear on the right of the screen. Once her specials level hits 1 then an orb will start circling it. Level 2 will have 2 etc. You can then trigger her special using the appropriate trigger (if she's the third character then right trigger).

The trick is to trigger your level 1 special when Nia has one orb circling her potrait. Then hold off her level 2 special until you've charged your gauge a bit. Trigger hers too early and you won't have time to get your gauge up to level 3. Too late and the timer will expire and you're back to level 1.

Getting these linked combos opens up chain attacks but I'd leave those for the time being.

Thanks for this Rex! Will give this a go next time I play.

My single favourite part of this game is Wulfric. His affinity quest videos are strawberry floating hilarious.

Just got him, hes pretty great so far I have to say, wonderfully over the top.

Im now 25 hours in and I feel like I have a handle on things, story is progressing, all the menu options are unlocked and I feel like I get the combat somewhat, really starting to hit my stride with it.

Only recently got Wulfric myself - although I can't remember at what point hist core crystal activated so I may have been able to unlock him earlier if I had been paying attention!

I need to put a bit more time into managing my blades - I've been pretty guilty of just focusing on each characters main blade at the moment (i.e. Pyra, Dromach, and Poppi) and not really putting much time into developing others.

On to chapter 5 now, and another new location!

Definitely develop the other blades, theyre essentialy for doing combos and ensuring you always have arts at the ready to build up your special meter.

Just hit chapter 7, felt 4 was a bit of a slog but 5 and 6 have just raced by to the point where I need to go back to develop those locations as I barely scratched the surface.

Oh and don't concentrate entirely on Pyra for reasons...
