I really wouldn't bother. There are very few rare blades that are that unique they can't be replaced by another blade.

The only things stopping my save file reaching such heights are a job, children, wife and a ridiculous habit of buying other games that I don't have time to play.

Same here.

I've put the game down after about 130hrs but I could easily see myself doubling that if I had the time. There's plenty of blades I've still not got, side quests to complete, named monsters to defeat, upgrades to earn on weapons, characters and blades etc. And that's all before even contemplating NG+

Ah, Xenoblade.

Is this game really that good? I keep dismissing it due to the combat system which seemed unintelligible to me in the promos etc. Then i see the time people are putting in to it and wonder if i am seriously missing out....

I can't speak for others but personally the combat system is the best part of the game! There are quite a few systems at play in the combat, but it does a good job of drip-feeding these to you so it doesn't feel too overwhelming.

Thanks of for response. I guess i have heard so many conflicting reports i am left a bit confused. Will add it to the "maybe" pile. More research needed.

Definitely the combat system is the highlight. There is no way I could have put the 125 hours into the game if that bit wasn't top notch. It does have many layers but it takes 15-20 hours before you even get a handle on the basics and it then adds bit by bit over the next 60-80 hours. You actually get a tutorial for a new method of attack right at the end of the game. But none of the extra stuff is essential, it just makes battles more efficient and improves the rewards you get at the end of it.

By the end of the game, you'll be managing driver arts whilst chaining blade skills along with cancelling auto attacks to power up your chain attack without a thought and you'll have no idea how you got to that state.

See that does sound interesting - the fact that you really master something over time. I thinks its the fact that it takes 20 hrs to get a handle on the basics that concerns me. I can see me getting really annoyed that i'm failing to understand the mechanics. But that's my problem.

Are the side quests etc engaging? Again, i'm guessing they must be given the amount of time you have invested....

Like I said though, you can trot along quite easily just using auto attack and the occasional blade art. You can win most battles without even changing blades unless you're on your own or you pick a fight with something x levels above you. It's almost like a fighting game, you learn the timing of the attacks, the combinations of attacks to raise the meter, you stack your blades so you can go break - topple - launch - smash easily, you pick your blade elementals so that you get the right orbs and then you unleash a massive chain attack. And you really only do this to speed up the battle or get extra loot/exp. But it's so satisfying.

Side quests vary from standard JRPG tosh to some quite interesting ones (particularly the blade specific stuff).

Yeah it is surprising how well you get to grips with the various facets of the battle system over time. Also they don't throw all of it at you straight away so you get time to learn and master each element as it comes online.

It's also perfectly possible to enjoy and complete the game without ever getting the most out of these aspects - there are many viable tactics, for example I never really made much of the "break - topple - launch - smash" sequence which Rex mentions. I knew it existed and how to achieve it if I wanted but I was busy having success with other approaches so never needed to tailor my party for that.

Just started this today. The voice acting :slol: Hope the battles get a bit more interesting as it goes on... If you're targeting an enemy/they're targeting you, does it actually matter where you're standing to attack each other? Tried to move out of range of one of those krabbie things, but it still damaged me despite being miles away... Not the biggest fan of the autoattack, but I'm expecting the different blades and stuff will give it a bit more excitement soon enough.

The voice acting for some characters is actually pretty good, I think! I love Nia's voice actress, and Pyra's is at least better than the squeaky-voiced Japanese gal.

That said, the Ardanian Soldiers, even after being patched, are still the 'best'.

As for range, yes you can get out of it, but it depends on the attack. Some may still hit.
