PostXmas present advice needed - laptop
by Red 5 stella » Sun Nov 13, 2016 9:15 am

My eleven year old daughter has said she would like a laptop for Christmas and to be honest I'm not sure best places to look, required spec and what is good value.

She has said she will use it for school work, browsing and she wants to be able to play the sims 4. (The sims 4 seems to be a 12 age rating so I think she will be ok with it).

Any ideas much appreciated as I'm a bit stumped.

I was thinking upto £500 but not really sure if that's enough or spec required to be able to play the sims 4 comfortably.

Something like this will keep Sims 4, on medium settings, over 30FPS at 1080p.

Keep an eye out for offers on similar laptops during Black Friday. Any laptop with a 6th or 7th generation Intel processor (the model number will be six or seven thousand and something) will do the job.

Apparently there will be a deal on Dell's website for a couple of cheap laptops on Black Friday...

...might be a 5th gen i3, but for £199 it seems like a pretty decent deal.

Would this laptop be able to run The Sims 4 ok?

New Inspiron 15 5000
It has Intel HD Graphics only but has Intel® Core™ i3-7100U [7th Generation Intel® Core™ i3-7100U Processor (3M Cache, up to 2.40 GHz)]

Your thoughts please?

Should be more than good enough, here's a video of someone running Sims 4 at 1080p Medium settings on a 6th gen i7 and getting 30fps out of it.

The laptop you posted a link to should have better graphics part to the processor and has a lower resolution screen. It should be fine.

Like I said though, that one that's going to be £199 on Black Friday would probably be ok too.

EDIT - If you are interested in what you might get out of that laptop do a search on YouTube for videos, seems like it'll play a fair amount of stuff but anything too taxing (Witcher 3 for example) is probably not going to be playable.
