That just seems like a missed opportunity for Sega as not all newcomers will want to jump in with episodes 5 and 6. I understand that a disc release might be too risky but they could easily add subs and put it on the online store. I saw that 1&2 got an upgrade to PS3 in Japan but there are no subtitles. I will wait to see what happens but if it isn't coming West then i might start with Yakuza 3 on PS3.

Do it. Do it. Do it. Do it. Do it. Do it. Do it. Do it. Do it.

Don't wait. Just jump in with 3. If you don't want previous games spoiled then don't watch the *thorough* re-cap.

Good man. So, far pretty slow in terms of real action, but interesting as always. I think for us westerners theres that added uniqueness because of the japanese setting.

I know it's going to be great because I loved Yakuza 1 to 4 to bits. (I've not played Dead Souls though :fp: )

Almost failed Karaoke with Saejima because the song was Rouge of Love. Anyone that gets to that point will know exactly what I'm talking about.

Since I want more Yakuza, I've went ahead and started Yakuza Dead Souls. My main worry because it'll be different from other Yakuza games, it might feel... less Yakuza-y. But as soon as I can unlock shops my worries are gone.

The only thing I don't really like is the combat (it's bit fiddy) but it's not too annoying enough to stop me enjoying it.

Still playing as Saejima. Over 30 hours clocked. I'm unsure how I feel about Saejima's hunting side missions; while they do offer a change of pace to regular Yakuza gameplay, it's ultimately shallow and lacks the depth of variety provided by other minigames the series has featured. Kazuma's taxi driving had more variety and purpose, even Saejima's own Dojo training from 4 was more fulfilling due to the layers it had.

However, I do love the atmosphere of it. Much like 4 the pacing is superb and allows ample time to breathe between action-heavy sequences. Kazuma segment ends on such a ludicrously high action point that to then slow it down is a ballsy yet necessary move made by the developers. It stops it from becoming over-saturated and builds the appetite for action once again. I'm in the final part of Saejima's story (I presume) and it's building up once more, beautiful.

It wasn't good enough to be given a EG award but the review, which I have only skimmed here and there, seems very praise worthy. They not only call it Shenmue's "true heir", but that it's the best Yakuza yet.

Yakuza 5 review
Shenmue's true heir.

Yakuza is the true heir to Shenmue and 5 is the greatest entry yet, stuffed with combat, minigames, and endless distractions.

Consider me hyped. I've went ahead and bought Yakuza 5 ( ) but I'm not playing it until I've beaten Dead Souls & possibly after Christmas (since I want to go back to Xenoblade Chronicles X when I've beaten Dead Souls) Nearly end of Part II Chapter 4 on Dead Souls.

So far my favourite Yakuza games in order: 1 > 4 > 2 > 3 > Dead Souls. It took me a while to decide which is my favourite, but it honestly has to be original because the story was really, really good and it was reason I got into Yakuza in first place. It also made me cry way more than others did; 4 is best for the gameplay (I love that I'm able to play as different characters), 2 has funniest side-quest ever plus first one to include different city which I really liked. Trying to think what I like best about 3, other than the fact it's really good game.

Dead Souls is fun side game, I also like how it's not *too* gory either. Was worried including zombies would mean that, but it seems I don't need to worry about it.

Yes!

Sev  I'll be playing it next year too.

3 is only your 4th favourite?! :deadtome:

Well, I haven't played 1 and 2 and so will take your word for it on those.
I just loved the Sunshine and 7 Mysteries of Downtown Ryukyu missions in 3 so much. It was those (and the combat and exploration of the city) that got me into the series and remain firm favourites.

I may even try Dead Souls for myself once I get the PS3 up here again. I know I'm not in for a traditional Yakuza combat experience so am aware of what I'm getting into, and so don't expect to be too disappointed with it.

You really should play first two games! They're amazing. ESPECIALLY SECOND ONE - mainly because of that sidequest.

People who have done it will know what I'm talking about.

I think it's Jp-only sadly, and Wii U isn't region free.

If I were you I'd pick PS2 versions up assuming you have means of playing them. I don't think they're expensive either.

I would stick to the PAL PS2 versions too. If you had played them before or want to stick to a guide I would suggest the JPN only release on PS3. Yakuza 1 & 2 on one disc. You can probably pick it up on eBay for £10.

Ta for the advice guys. Greatly appreciated!

And speaking of Yakuza 1, here's some new comparison footage of Kiwami: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b2yvfh8 ... be&t=3m26s (skip to 3m 26s if video starts at beginning for you.)

EuroGamer must have amended their review, as I just checked the site and Yakuza 5 now has a 'Recommended' award
