Could age be a factor in perception, here? Young people can perceive certain higher frequency noises that adults cannot.

I can hear both depending on what one I am looking at / wanting to hear

I hear Laurel, but I can hear '...anny' in a sort of crackly whisper at the end of it. Can't for the life of me hear the full word, though.

I tried messing around with the audio a little and I guess that's exactly what's happening.

Aye. The idea is that different people are more sensitive to different frequency ranges. You probably happen to be dead in the middle, which means you can hear both.

A priori I would expect young women to be the most solidly "yanny" group and older men to be the most solidly "laurel" group. Would be interesting to see some statistics and learn whether that's actually the case!

The nature of this reminds me of the Marilyn Monroe-Albert Einstein illusion, which uses low- and high-sharpness to put two images in one, kinda like how this is low- and high-frequency sound.

Close-up it looks like Einstein, and far away it looks like Monroe.

It's a mess of a sound really but I can certainly understand why someone would say they hear "Yanny".

Nothing in there even comes close to sounding like "Laurel" to me!

Other than being dead for several years, quite a lot I'd say, he was a bit 'special'

This thing is nuts. At work I hear yanny, my mate heard laurel. Come home and try it here, now I hear laurel. Come back 5 minutes later and it's back to yanny, then immediate on a second play it's back to laurel.

Thinking about it at work I was wearing different headphones.
It is consistently Laurel on the Bluetooth headphones I wear for music to and from work and was consistently yanny on my wired ones at work.

The very first time I heard a weird combination of 'Yaurel', now I can't hear anything but Laurel after repeated listening.

I can only hear Laurel.

My wife says she heard it as Yanny this morning but can only hear Laurel now.

 Check out "The One" over here!

I still can't get anything other than Yanny out of it, and I've listened on multiple devices now!

Ffs. It was "Laurel" at work and I got irritated that this was a stupid internet thing and made fun of my colleague who heard "Yanny".

Back home after dinner and all I can hear is Yanny.

Just listened again and all I can hear is Laurel. Stupid human body.
