Anyone do this/ up for giving it a try?

After years of weightlifting with minimal stretching my body's like a rod and I keep tearing muscles so figured I'd finally do something about it.

Classes round here are limited, expensive and rarely in English though so resorted to watching YT videos such as this and doing the positions alongside the woman:

Checked with my sister who's a yoga instructor and she said it's still a decent way to learn although obviously not ideal, imagine it'll be fine for most of the folk on here.

So, anyone else partake? Up for doing some series of videos and progressing alongside one another?

Even if you're not into other sports there's plenty of benefits to it: http://www.nhs.uk/Livewell/fitness/Pages/yoga.aspx

I've done a few hot yoga classes with my missus and I must admit I felt pretty great afterwards. The problem for me is a) the price and b) there's nowhere within 10 miles of me that does it.

a) can be solved with a limited visits voucher which you can often find on Groupon but the travel is the killer for me. When we lived in Hove for a short while there were two places within walking distance. If I did live in walking distance I'd absolutely attend a couple of classes a week (as long as I had a voucher).

Really got into yoga a few years back. Stopped when I moved to Glasgow, recently picked it back up. In fact I'm heading to a class in fifteen minutes!

The thing is there are so many different variations that you do need to find the style that works for you. Similarly, you need to find an instructor that works for you. I lucked out with the classes I go to in Cardiff, they offer a variety of styles but the Vinyasa is my favourite. All about deep stretches, flowing movements and strong holds. It really puts me through my paces and I enjoy it a lot. However, I tried a Vinyasa in Glasgow that did nothing for me, so it can come down to luck.

Wouldn't mind getting into doing more at home. Motivation is a killer for me though.

I did some 'yoga for strength' earlier in the week :slol: It was a bit farcical, tbh. Not because of the yoga itself, but due to the fact I was following instructions on YouTube and often found myself facing away from the screen and so it was a bit difficult to see what I was supposed to be doing. Ended with giving it up and going back to regular workout. Will try and get used to the positions, then try again.

I do a bit of ashtanga yoga.

The only downside you may get following along with videos is you wont get the instructor correcting you. Some corrections can be very subtle.

I have found out recently that when I try to do down dog that my left wrist pops kinda up and out a wee bit...no idea why :dread:

Its not sore but feels strange and me thinks its not good to keep doing it...

Mark Robberds has some good yoga videos:

Pilates supremacy. :datass: (apparently that's better for someone like myself who has had sciatica / herniated disc).

Otherwise known as Bikram Yoga. You'll sweat more than Denster in a nunnery.
