This is what confuses me to be honest. When I lived in Italy I found that people had huge portions of pasta, had pizza slices for breakfast or lunch, kids had nutella on bread for breakfast etc. Lots of fried food everywhere. I also never really noticed many people going jogging, or cycling around etc either. Maybe its in the genes.

I am very slim. I eat massive portions of fresh pasta with meat and tonnes of fresh veggies. I eat entire pizzas in a sitting. The key is to balance that out. If I eat a shitload of pizza, Ill probably swerve the double helping of cake and a litre of Pepsi. At lunch today I ate a KFC Burrito with fries and another portion of the spicy chicken for a snack. Today Ill probably not eat a donut or a chocolate bar.

Its very easy to moderate your body weight if you manage what you put into it.

yeah but were they snacking constantly? when they show fat people on tv (cant remember the name of the show at the moment) they had what id call 'normal' portions for their main meals but then theyd be eating other gooseberry fool constantly.

Agreed. It's the snacks that get a lot of fatties. They think it's hardly anything at the time, but it all adds up.

Metabolism has a lot to do with it. I used to eat around 2,500 calories a day and never deviated off of 11 stone (69.8kg). Upped it to 2,800. Didn't move. Went to 3,000 and got to 11 stone 6. 3,200 and I now sit at I want to be at (12 stone/76.2kg). So on one hand I completely understand putting on weight is different depending on who you are, but at the same time I look at people who eat masses of food and wonder how on earth they do it. 90% of the time I personally was quite content eating the recommended amount of calories.

It's for sure the constant snacking some people do, especially crisps and chocolate bars. Also probably alcohol. I've just always been surprised at how low down Italy is when it comes to these statistics. I know exactly how much Italians love to eat. A lot of it is carb heavy too. Delicious, but carb heavy. When you go for a meal out in Italy, you see how much they eat, so I don't think it's a rare thing as they can eat a lot.

Carbs don’t make you fat... well to be more exact your body wants to store carbs as energy and the last thing it wants to do is store it as fat.

Do they consume a lot of ready meals, sandwiches, kebabs etc?

Don't Italians tend to not eat breakfast and have very little at lunch?

It seems utterly bizarre to me that in the UK and Ireland we want ever increasing investment in our health services but are happy to see governments spend sod all on ways for people to keep healthy.

David Walsh wrote a few great pieces in the Sunday Times about how basketball in the UK gets relatively little funding despite a lot of people playing it and the reason given is that the UK don't do well in basketball at the Olympics.

It's sort of worse, in that participation in sports tend to drop when the professional stuff is on. I remember during in the 2012 Olympics we had a huge drop of at my running club because everyone was watching the professionals compete. It also takes ages to get back to the club as they get out of the habit.

From my experience it was usually biscuits and that kind of thing, bread with nutella if you were a kid. Or if on the go some kind of pastry/slice of pizza rossa. Lunch is usually pretty decent, as lots have long breaks so they have a big meal with family or friends. My gf had to go to loads of offices as a teacher and they'd always have cakes, and big lunches. I'm not a nutritionist though, so maybe all the good quality veg helps *shrug*. Since moving to Germany I've noticed me and my gf have gained weight compared with when living in Italy, and I am positive I ate a crap load more in Italy.

@souljahsstory - not so much kebabs, but they were always snacking. You'd be hard pressed to venture outside and not see the majority of people in a cafe or walking with a snack or an ice cream.

It's a stereotype, but they sure do love their massive sausage in Germany.

I'm trying to shift weight at the moment, I've lost 3 stone in the last 8 months or so.

The main thing I've found is that cooking a quick and healthy meal is a piece of piss. Snacking in a healthy way or cutting it out altogether is far harder. Not a shift would go by at work without someone bringing in donuts, biscuits, sweets etc.

Snacking is my problem too, especially when at work and bored. The urge for comfort food takes over.

Since moving down south I have lost a stone.

Didn't intend to do it, I am just not eating a bacon roll practically every morning and eating loads at lunch.

And I have definitely stopped eating as much chocolate.

This post is exempt from the No Context Thread.

Yep, I work 12 hour shifts which is just the worst thing when trying to diet.
