So let me get this right...Halo ODST can look like Halo 3 and Conviction's gameplay has been done umpteen times before...you know, wonder about, go up stairs, through door, shoot people, get to point A, then B etc...but Uncharted 2 looks generic?

:fp: at this argument.

Uncharted 2 and Conviction were the two best games of the show for me, though I still haven't seen the Scribblenauts showing.

Most out-there prediction (particularly based on the pisspoor conference showing): Wii Sports Resort for GOTY. You heard it here first.

By the way, I reckon those awards are pretty much bang-on or nearly there, with the exception of Best Racing Game, which I think should have gone to Forza 3.

90% this.

Forza 3 and NFS Shift certainly looked amazing but the fun Split Second is what I am looking for.

There's a bit more to it than that now, coolie. I'm not going to pretend Conviction is some kind of revolution, but the way its going about its stealth/combat mechanics with more rawness and finesse was pretty impressive.

Oh yeah...I mean I can't stand Splinter Cell (played a couple for a bit on XBox and really didn't like them) but Conviction really stood out for me.

My point was that I can't see why people were singling out Uncharted 2 as being generic when ODST and Conviction are also...well...generic. Impressively so but still generic.

ODST is set in an open world (well city).

Conviction looks significantly better than the last game graphically and is doing different stuff with the story and has new gameplay mechanics.

Uncharted 2 is Uncharted set in a different location, it literally (from a SP perspective) appears to be doing nothing significant thats new in terms of gameplay and while it does look better than the original, its not a massive leap. Which isn't to say it doesn't look amazing.

Granted Uncharted 2 is bringing multiplayer as well, but from the beta, although its good, its not really special as far as I'm concerned.

Well, in fairness, I think only Photek actually called Uncharted 'generic'. I think it's basically what Hugo said. While Uncharted 2 does look amazing and the co-op is a great addition, in terms of gameplay it's more of the same. Which is not a bad thing by any means, but perhaps makes it a stretch to name it best in show.

Although it's worth pointing out that Uncharted was hands-on, whereas most of the other contenders people have mentioned were not. That's quite possibly a big part in the thinking behind it being game of the show.

I don't understand the excitement for Uncharted 2 either. It doesn't look like anything that hasn't been done before quite a few times already.

Yep, it was me! 8-)
Halo3 ODST, Modern Warfare 2 and Splinter Cell where handson on too I think.
I honestly don't see what the fuss is about any of these games to be honest, apart from ODST which excites me because I love Halo. I fully understand why other people aren't excited by it though.

ODST was with the Firefight mode. Modern Warfare 2 and Splinter Cell were not, developer walkthroughs only.

It was proper, fully-working playable code but you weren't allowed to actually play it yourself, rather taken through it by the devs. No matter how much you begged to have a go yourself.

Surely best in show means, the best game played overall and the one they are most looking forward to? If so then why are people down on Uncharted as best in show? Seems strange that people want best in show to not be a sequel :|

Personally its not that it shouldn't be a sequel as such, just that something new goes a long way to making a game more exciting.

What games at E3 matched that criteria, in your opinion?

If I say NSMBWii and Spliner Cell Conviction does that answer the question in the way you want?

Also Heavy Rain of course.

Lots of games did. I can't actually think of a more straight sequel from a SP perspective than Uncharted 2. Its not that thats a terribly bad thing for the game, just that it dampens down my enthusiasm for it.

Of course, yeah - I was just interested in your opinion. Not that I agree with it, though
