Basically a more niche version of the travel thread but I'll be going away again later in the year for two weeks and have no idea where to head so curious for suggestions.

Mine was Croatia, thought the coast was absolutely stunning and it was all so nicely contained in a geographically small space. The islands were beautiful, there were historic cities and varied things to do and it essentially only had one backpacking route which is great as it means you meet the same people repeatedly.

Australia's east coast was great too although the bus journey's were killer and the lack of culture got to me after a while. Thailand was a bit too similar to Magaluf style partying in the really touristy areas for me, and pretty poverty stricken in the properly out the way places.

Where've you been that's great? Help me out :shifty:

For 2 weeks, assuming you want somewhere inexpensive, I'd recommend Sri Lanka.

It's fairly cheap, has beautiful beaches without the Brits abroad element Thailand has, lots to do inland such as Sigirya Rock, Polonnaruwa, elephant safaris and hiking at places like Adams Peak. Plus it's not too big and while the transport links aren't great, you can get about a fair bit within 2 weeks. The train rides can be especially beautiful too. Wouldn't recommend spending much time in Colombo, but otherwise it's a good fit for a 2 week trip.

My favourite backpacking trip would involve hotels and a hire car.

If Rocsteady is freezing to death in the woods, then I am happy with just an ok hotel.

Replace the hire car with easily accessible public transport and I'm sold

If you don't have a Nespresso machine in the room you may as well be in a cave.

Years ago, when I was backpacking across western Europe. I was just outside Barcelona, hiking in the foothills of mount Tibidabo. I was at the end of this path, and I came to a clearing, and there was a lake, very secluded, and there were tall trees all around. It was dead silent. Gorgeous. And across the lake I saw a beautiful woman bathing herself. She was...crying.

Took me a moment. Very good.

Rocsteady, South of France can be pretty good, more on the East bordering Italy. Some beautiful locations, and enough small towns dotted around that you'll be able to find accommodation if the situation demands. Spent about 7 weeks in that area last year. Am actually in Northwest France right now. It is also really cool, but I reckon I still prefer the Southeast.

'Course, France is more expensive than other countries, if you don't know how to shop smart (stock up on bread, it's cheap, delicious and fucken everywhere).

USA. Wasn't quite backpacking per se(I had a suitcase) but six weeks of moving from hostel to hostel for "university research"* purposes. Every single night would be spent with a few beers and whoever happened to be passing through on that particular night - Icelandics, Croatians, Australians(loads of Australians), Kiwis, English, one Scottish, some Canadians and a ton of Irish. Genuinely the best time I've had, would go back and do it all again in a second.

* please. It's incredible I finished that degree.

Don't think it counts as.backpacking but Croatia is also my favourite holiday. After a few days on the mainland in a hostel, I then spent a week kayaking around the islands away from all the touristy bits. Sea was amazing, weather was perfect, and the food was made with ingredients from the garden, or fish caught that day. It was incredible.

A bit more of a back packing holiday was when I took my motorbike around Europe. Just me, my bike, a tent and no plan other than a rough idea of the countries I was going to try and visit. Went through France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Monaco, then France again. Really great experience.

Aw man, the fish in Croatia. Tried my first oysters there and they blew my mind.

That sounds class, sort of what I'd be looking for as well got a little more money now so could afford to do more expensive places. How did you get about down there?

That's cool, I was told years back that the hostel situation in the U.S.wasn't the best. Which state(s) were you in?

The US is my big plan for next year, want to drive the big sur and go around California a bit after hearing how incredible it is (pretty sure from folk on here).

Thanks man I'll bear that in mind, did run into a couple of folk in Thailand who had just been and were raving about how great the place was.

You could head to the South Pacific. It's gorgeous, friendly and reasonably cheap (although costly to get there).

The Cook Islands, Fiji, French Polynesia.... All stunning.

Aitutaki is probably the most beautiful place I've ever been, just incredibly relaxing.

I'm not sure if two weeks is enough to do it justice, but if you get a chance to go you should.

I called off his players' names as they came marching up the steps behind him....All nice guys. They'll finish last. Nice guys. Finish last.
