My favourite genre is: RPG/JRPG

It's my favourite because: Lots of reasons. The worlds tend to be vast, which I'm able to escape/lose myself in. I love collecting items/weapons/armour/etc and upgrading them, as well as levelling up my character. I find the genre frequently has some of the best music in videogames. I also love the 'epic' feel of a lot of them; long, involved plots, memorable characters, interesting battle systems (JRPGs), and the feeling of putting lots of hours in to build your character/party and overcome the odds. Sure, the plots are generally quite cliché and tired, but all the stuff I love outweighs that.

My favourite example is: Probably Final Fantasy VI. Pretty much has all of the above; wonderful music, memorable characters, large/involved world, etc. Some great moments in there.

Your turn.

My favourite genre is: Racing/Driving

It's my favourite because: I'm not entirely sure why, to be honest. For a long time I was casually interested in racing games while playing other things, dabbling with Gran Turismo, Burnout, Colin McRae Rally etc, but certainly over the last few years I've been gravitating more and more towards the genre as a whole. It's odd, because I'm not really all that good at them either - I played Forza 4 online with a group for a while in weekly races that were fairly casual drive-what-you-bring affairs, going through each car class on a particular track. I'd come dead-last a lot of the time, but still managed to enjoy it. I think it's the fact that even if you're at the back, you can still DO stuff; for example in CS I tend to get about 20 seconds of game then another minute to minute and a half of being dead and watching everyone else. At least I can still drive, practice lines, improve braking zones etc., even if at the back. I like everything from sim games like Assetto Corsa to super-arcadey games like Drift Stage, Outrun, Motorstorm and the like. I even had a wheel at one point, but barely used it as it was too much hassle.

I have also branched into doing liveries and race designs in games that allow it. This started in Forza 4, where I did a handful of designs, mainly replicas from other games and the odd historical replica:

From there I branched out into doing some on PC, which involved learning how to use Photoshop, which I still don't fully understand, but came out with some more detailed replicas:

My favourite example is: Probably Forza Motorsport/Horizon as a brand as a whole. The DLC is quite gouging, but the balance between Motorsport and Horizon provides a great environment for simply doing stuff with cars, and they've covered pretty much all the bases, from circuit racing to the open road, from tinkering under the hood to graphic design, all in one package. Shame it's not on PC

My favourite genre is: FPShooters/FPAdventures

It's my favourite because:
Ever since Doom I've fallen in love with the genre because although you do control an avatar of sorts, putting you in the actual person seeing out is closest I get to feeling I'm the person involved.

My favourite example is:
Too many to choose from, even GTA V is up there with the very best and I play that exclusivley in FP. Notable mentions to Half-Life 2, Halo 3, Skyrim, Left4Dead and So many more but my favourite is Bioshock. I adore Rapture and to be honest, having an Irish voice guide you is something I loved, not least cos it was a Dublin accent that was used, the novelty never wore off and Art Deco is my favourite type of architecture bar none. Stunning game that oozes atmosphere.

Generally...

My favourite genre is: Stealth

It's my favourite because: I've always enjoyed approaching enemies in games in a "tactical" sneaky way, so ever since the release of Metal Gear Solid 1 I've found the stealth genre offers me exactly that.

My favourite example is: MGS1 I suppose, although the recent Splinter Cell titles have done a great job of intertwining both tactical stealth and action.

Favourite Genre: Adventure platformer
It's my favourite because: Colourful, fantastical worlds with memorable and oft-wacky characters inhabiting them, wide open for you to explore every nook and cranny for enough shiny collectibles to satisfy even the most magpie-like of players. The all-ages appeal they mostly share encourages feelings of nostalgic joy while the gameplay itself blends the skilful, trance-like appeal of platforming with more cereberal puzzle solving elements and of course the more mindless but satisfying action and combat. Games in the genre often also manage to include all manner of other gameplay elements - to take my favourite example below, there are racing, on-rails shooting and Tony Hawk's-like jetboarding segments, along with a wide assortment of other mini-games.
My favourite example is: Jak II

Could easily have said action-adventure instead to be honest, with either Uncharted 2 or TLOU as the favourite example. Hunting action too, with all the PSP and Vita entries in that genre.

Favourite Genre: Action/adventure

It's my favourite because: It can borrow from other genres without losing focus, see driving in GTA, platforming in Uncharted, shooting in Gears of War, stealth in MGS, puzzles in Tomb Raider.

My favourite example is: Uncharted 2/GTA V/Metal Gear Solid V

Favourite Genre: Real Time Strategy

It's my favourite because:
I could go on for days, even weeks about how good a great RTS game is and why. To keep it brief I think the best way of explaining it is that for me, nothing beats the ability to go into the start of a game on an even footing and have every single action, every single button press lead up to your eventual loss or win. You have to play fast, but efficiently and you need to constantly switch focus from your units, to your base to build and you always need to be checking your resources and supply count to make sure your resource count isn't getting high and you're not going to get supply blocked. There's a huge adrenaline rush you can get from seeing your army slowly move over the map taking ground and taking names as they push and when your opponent eventually ggs it's one of the best feelings you'll ever recieve from gaming.

The initial building, the harassment, the push, the final stand of your enemy. Every moment is a total rush. There's so much depth in a great RTS game and there's so many builds, so many counter builds and so many tactics you can employ in the split seconds of the game to change the outcome of the entire game. One good vulture runby and suddenly you've got a lead, but if you waste your chance they can rebuild and eventually come back and take the win. It's a true battle of minds. You're beyond playing just the game, you're playing your opponent as well. There's a huge amount of mind games in a great RTS. Even doing something as simple as faking a building or faking an expansion can tip the balance in your favour if they don't work it out.

My favourite example, nay favourite game of all time is:
StarCraft: Broodwar. The perfect RTS.

Favourite Genre: 'Metroidvania' (hate that term, but most people will know what it means).

It's my favourite because: I not only enjoy the backtracking and accessing areas I couldn't previously with newly acquired skills/items; but I also really enjoy accessing areas I shouldn't be in via sequence breaking and/or glitches. And games of this ilk allow that desire to flourish.

My favourite example is: Metroid Prime/Super Metroid/ALTTP

Interesting topic, Lotus, although I've found it difficult to pick a single genre!

Favourite Genre Football.
It's my favourite because Every game feels different; I enjoy the fact that there are reasonably simple rules but that these allow for a kaleidoscope of outcomes.
My favourite example is Pro Evolution Soccer 2015 (Konami, PS4).

To add a bit of perspective, my favourite football titles over the years include:

> International Football (C64) - this persuaded me to save up for the machine. The ball could hit the cross-bar and (gasp!) it had a shadow!
> Kick-Off (ST / Amiga) - Wow. This was fast, furious and addictive. It was a bit pinball-y but, once mastered, offered months of fun.
> Goal! (Amiga) - The *real* Kick-Off 3 by Dino Dini. Better graphics, improved gameplay and excellent new game modes.
> Man Utd Europe (Amiga) - Krisalis Software delivered some fun, side-on gameplay but there were certainly a few quirks.
> FIFA (Megadrive) - The original game was an amazingly playable title that shook up the market. The start of a legend... albeit one that has only occasionally resonated with me personally.
> International Superstar Soccer (SNES) - Konami struck gold with this; tremendously additive with a hint of strategy.
> Sierra World Cup Challenge (Amiga) - This arrived out of nowhere and, whilst time has not been kind, it enabled tremendously fast, 3D-style gameplay in an unofficial World Cup tournament. It was *fast*, though!
> Goal Storm (PS1) - Whilst one Konami team were developing ISS, another were working on this pre-curser to Pro Evolution Soccer. It's aged badly, but packed with unintentionally funny moments. That commentary!
> ISS Pro (PS1) - Konami moulded Goal Storm into a more strategic game... the early signs of PES are showing through here.
> ISS 64 (N64) - Legendary. In my view, the ultimate arcade-style football game. Fast, fluid and fun.
> Pro Evolution Soccer (PS1) - Konami continued to develop this slightly more strategic armof their football franchise and this, for me, changed everything. Slick play, realistic movement, great replays... a true classic.
> Pro Evolution Soccer 2013 (PS3) - I feel that this is when PES returned to the beloved gameplay of the earlier versions. I've enjoyed 2013, 2014 and now 2015. Each has been beset by launch teething-troubles, but in the long-term I've gained huge enjoyment from them.

So many great titles... I've had lots of good times with them .

Relegation candidates include Gazza II (ST), Total Football (Amiga), Man Utd European Champions (Amiga), FIFA 2000 (PS1) and *definitely* Super Kick-Off (Megadrive). Oddly, the Master System version was terrific. Oh, and I aways preferred Kick-Off / Goal! to Sensible Soccer :-).

Tl;dr PES .

I remember FIFA 2000 being hammered at the time but I enjoyed it. It was nowhere near as deep as ISS and had the classic "sweet spot" problem, but it was fast and frantic. The later games didn't really know what they wanted to be. Also 2000 had the best soundtrack.

I made a schooboy error  - it was, of course, International Soccer on the C64 and not International Football :fp:.

Incidentally, Football International on the GameBoy was fun, although mainly because it was crazy (a dog ran across the screen when a player scored a hat-trick...) and due to the manual being one of the all-time greatest badly translated documents *ever*. In fact, I've written about it before on RetroCollect - click here to read about "...the first real soccer game that has made a comet-like appearance on the world of Game Boy." .

Favourite genre: RACAN

Its my favourite because: I like cars, I gotta go fast, and Im good at them. Every lap is a fresh challenge, especially if you are playing sim stuff with fuel weight, tyre condition, all assists off etc. The opponent challenge changes every single time, and it never plays out the same way. Becoming one with the wheels and track and banging out consistent times shaving off tenths is addictive. I get to experience analogues of places and machines that Ill sadly probably never get to in real life.

My favourites are: Dirt 1, NFSU 1, Forza 4, Horizon 2, GRID 1

FIGHTAN GAYMES

I like them because they do everything a good game should do. They're fun, challenging and very deep.
And they're really exciting to watch.

Funny enough years ago, I would be screaming "RPG"!!!

But now I don't have a favourite genre. But most of the games I play nowadays is Third Person adventures, so I suppose that, but not the sandbox kind.

Stuff like: Uncharted, Infamous, Batman Arkham series etc. I also like Murdered: Soul Suspect.

The only genre I didn't touch nowadays is racing games (apart from Mario Kart series) ever since... It's my least favourite genre.
