Funny enough years ago, I would be screaming "RPG"!!!

But now I don't have a favourite genre. But most of the games I play nowadays is Third Person adventures, so I suppose that, but not the sandbox kind.

Stuff like: Uncharted, Infamous, Batman Arkham series etc. I also like Murdered: Soul Suspect.

The only genre I didn't touch nowadays is racing games (apart from Mario Kart series) ever since... It's my least favourite genre.

It's really hard to pick a favourite genre...

  • On the action-RPG front, I obviously love Deus Ex, and Oblivion was very good too. But I don't really like Mass Effect, and while I thought Dragon Age was okay it doesn't really sit amongst my favourite games. And while I wanted to like Dark Souls, I found it ultimately too frustrating. So I feel unqualified to say "I love action-RPGs!".
  • There have been some great FPS games - Half-Life, Doom, Quake, Unreal, Duke Nukem 3D, pre-2010 Team Fortress 2 - and it's probably the genre I've played the most of and gotten the most enjoyment out of. But I'm not sure I'm a big enough fan of the old classics to list it as my favourite genre (I haven't even finished Doom yet, or played its sequel!), and most modern FPS games like Battlefield don't really interest me.
  • Action-adventure has Zelda, one of my consistently favourite game series, and Metroid Prime, definitely in my top five of all games; but I didn't really like e.g. the Batman games that much. I have a narrow, Nintendo-oriented skew on the genre and I feel true action-adventure fans would call me out on that.
  • The more action-adventurey side of platformers can lay a claim to some of the games I really like, such as the 2D Metroids and Psychonauts; and I do really like old 8/16 bit era platformers like Mario and Sonic. But the contemporary twist on platformers - particularly the "physics puzzle platformer" - makes my blood boil.
  • I really like turn-based strategy. (A lot!) In fact, I don't think I've played a turn-based strategy game and disliked it. But I never finished Advance Wars, and that makes me feel like a pretender when standing against genuine strategy nuts; and while I love Fire Emblem they are always too difficult for me to finish properly (I mean, picking up all characters without anyone dying - obviously I can finish them, but it's not the same). OTOH I despise RTS games, they are too fast and frantic for me.
  • To make things more confusing, there are also some genres that I generally really dislike that contain some of my favourite games! I have serious problems with the fighting game genre, but Skullgirls is some of the best fun you can have with friends. Likewise with racers and Mario Kart.

The pattern in this list is probably that "retro games" is my favourite genre. :fp:

My favourite example, nay favourite game of all time is:
StarCraft: Broodwar. The perfect RTS.

Have you tried the Mass Recall mod for Starcraft 2? It's a recreation of the Starcraft and Broodwar campaigns with the Starcraft 2 engine. Just started playing it this week and i'm really enjoying it.
