OK so I guess a lot of us will have been dicks when we were young at some point when it came to video games, so I thought it might be fun to have a topic to share these kind of stories. To get the ball rolling I will start.

I was looking up stuff online for a blog post and I came across some pictures of diffrent SNES pads and it got me thinking about all of the pads I had owned, so I started looking at them and then I rememberd a pad I had which I cant find a picture of. It looked like a generic grey 3rd party snes pad but the middle of it was hollow, in fact you could pull the middle out and then have the two half's of it in individual hands with a decent size wire in between them sort of a bit like holding a Wii Mote and Nunchuck.

Well I was fairly decent at one on one fighters but I had a friend who was better than me. He would be the one who was always playing practically none stop when we had winner stays on tournaments and kind of being a sore winner gloating and rubbing it in peoples faces. The two of us actually entered a tournament with prize money for Art of Fighting 2 when it first came out and well the top 3 spots in the tournament won money and other prizes. I came 4th he came 3rd so I then had to put up with even more taunting from him as did everyone else. This pushed me a little too far and I decided to get good , to get good specifically at street fighter 2 turbo on the snes as this was his favorite game and he always swore he was unbeatable.

I purchased two snes joypads for this one of the ones was the above pad I described the splittable one the other was this special pad where with the push of one button you could pull of pre-programmed street fighter 2 special moves. I basically trained myself to use the weird split pad even going so far as to be able to play with it held behind my back in a weird stupid lame cocky way. I got my brother to use the special move pad to spam fireballs so I could practice doing them fast myself and/or just getting out of the way. Eventually I got so good that I could whip this lad while holding this weird third party pad behind my back fake yawning and taking the piss. I only ever did it to him and it was basically to show him how much of a dick he had been to all of us with his sore winning but I have to admit that it was kind of a dick head thing for me to do even if a fair few people seemed to enjoy seeing him eat a little humble pie.

I wish I still had that weird split pad, or at the least find a picture of it.

On the contrary, it sounds like you are to be congratulated. He appears to be the dick of the story.

I did that except it was to a mate who is and was really bad at all games and I suspect may have a mild learning difficulty. Everything went right for me but wrong for him and he was bested 12-0 at PES3. I don’t believe I’ve ever heard such rage.

I once beat my friend 50-3 at Four Swords Adventures battle mode in one sitting.

Last year I was round another friend's and he decided to buy Nidhogg 2 so we had something new to play. I was beating him 13-0 when he decided to remove all weapons, set a short time limit, and managed to get a sudden death win in overtime. He then turned it off and we haven't played again since

A group of us used to play a lot of Megadrive games at one of our mates. His Megadrive was on his bedroom floor and it was always easy to move your foot to switch it off or pull his joypad out (Kenneth.jpg) if you were losing.

He used to do the same thing to the rest of us though so I am not sure it was us being cocky edgelords, more cheating little gooseberry fools.

My brother was always a nightmare to play games with, on Super Mario Kart he'd insist on me racing with a shrunken kart (on character select screen you can shrink your kart if you press the right button combo), then moan when i still was able to beat him.

He'd always insist i was cheating when i won against him too, he'd even do it with games like Mario Party in which success was usually down to sheer dumb luck.

I had a friend who was very good at GoldenEye.

He knew all the spawn points and would take you out before you had a chance. However, one day I actually happened to beat him.

From that day on to his annoyance, I never ever played him again. He simply never got revenge.

I'm wondering kerr9000, what became of your friend?

Do you feel that in life, he became a bigger dick, or did he mellow?

Did your obsession to beat him change his personality?

Were you the catalyst to turn your friends life around?

I can be a bit of a cocky git when playing CoD sometimes, once someone sent me a message calling me a camper (along with a few other rude words), i messaged back offering them some tea and biscuits the next time they visit my tent.

My friend actually chilled out a bit with games from then on so I guess in that way it was good. It probably didn't change his life as gaming was the only area where he was a dick.

I've never really been a cocky gamer but I did go through a phase of playing a fair bit of Virtua Fighter 5 online. On one occasion I kept being matched with the same guy and I kept beating him, after a maybe 3 or 4 matches we got matched up again and he just gave up, he stood there and let me beat him. During that match I messaged him saying "Dude, fight back. I'm not even good" and he just stood there doing nowt. I saved the match replay for posterity.

When getting hammered, my flatmate at Uni just use to deliberately keep getting sent off until the game was abandoned and would finish 3-0.

When Brawl was the latest Smash game, I got into it really competitively but never entered anything. When I started uni, my uni held a couple tournaments and I won them both. It gave me my first taste of a tournament experience. In 2nd year, I meet a guy who was generally cocky with all games he played, and so, of course, we said we'd play Brawl at some point. He said he was so good, he had won tournaments with Bowser, a low-tier character, and that he'd beat me with Bowser, even though he mained Falco, a high-tier like myself. I remained humble and didn't want to under-estimate him, so said I was looking forward to getting rekt by this Bowser.

I continued to see him at various gatherings, though not anywhere we could play Brawl. We'd continue to talk about various advanced tech, character discussions, etc. Eventually he talked about individual match ups and the match up chart. I said I hadn't really looked into the match up chart, to which he responds that since I hadn't, I "will never do well competitively". Eventually the guy shows up to the Video Game Society, and I'm like let's strawberry floating go. I picked Falco, he picked Bowser. I beat him comfortably and convincingly game 1. 3 stock him game 2. He switches to Falco for game 3 and I rek him again. I just shook his hand, stood up and said ggs. He seemed a little shocked, and said how he hadn't played in a while and that he needed to get his Falco back up to scratch. I was like 'sure, let me know when it is and we'll fight again' and went back to my circle of friends while he went and practiced with Falco on his own. We didn't play again. I then went on to get top 16 at a national Brawl tournament in London the following year without looking at that match up chart. What a dick.

You might have won if you'd looked at the match up chart

But then I'd be admitting he was right. He placed a curse on me.

(I actually do pay more attention to individual match ups in Smash 4 now and still don't win)

I can be cocky when I play Super Smash Bros Melee. During a crew battle I patted some guy's back when I took a stock from him. He then wagered a pint on the game. I was pretty confident in winning so I taunted quite a lot, giving him free opportunities to punish. If he had remained composed I shouldn't have won, really, but in the end I did. I felt a little bad because he's a nice guy; a lot of people in my competitive scene have big egos and he's one of the most humble. But I got free beer and he seemed cool about it afterwards. Generally I'm pretty respectful myself and I take tournament games seriously, but this was a crew battle with nothing really on the line so it's a lot more lax.

A friend of mine likes to play competitive smash.

I like to be cocky by going to the mini tournaments he sometimes hosts and being gooseberry fool, and not knowing the lingo. it really makes me feel like a casual.

I used to play a lot of HALO CE on the PC, and my friend was absolutely amazing at it. He used to camp in the middle of blood gulch and use the pistol and sniper rifle killing anything that got anywhere near him, swapping one out for the rocket launcher that spawned there every few kills. He could easily get 25-5 on you (or something like that.

Anyway, I decided to practice, or come up with a way to beat him. in ONE game, i got a warthog, ran over him at the start (pure luck) and got his sniper and pistol. And then went and camped in the middle as he always did to me....after getting about 10 kills he did get me, but I won the round by 25-23!

This was possibly the only time I beat him and I was so so happy at the time.

Anyway to end the story on a morbid note, he's dead now and I'm not. Do I win?

Last time I went to a smash tournament I timed out a Kirby player because Kirby is slow and can't chase you when losing. Man didn't even shake my hand. I don't go out of my way to upset people but time outs have always been a strategy that completely tilts people so I can't help but be amused when people take it personally.
