Disable Auto Updates. Some of them (esp .Net framework updates) can rape your hard disk space. It also stores all the installers, this can sometimes be hundreds of Megs.

That's in:

C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download

It's safe to delete that whole folder (check on google if you don't believe me).

Also, if you see any blue folders in your Windows directory that start with $NtUninstall (You may need to enable viewing of hidden files to see this) you can delete safely. I mean you wont be able to uninstall updates, but who the strawberry float needs too as long as your PC is running OK.

(1) Reduce the amount of space that system restore uses. This is safe because it only reduces the backlog of restore points and makes them less often, but still when you install updates or drivers etc. (generally stuff that can muck up Windows).

Right click My Computer > Properties > System Restore tab > Settings button > reduce the slider to save up to 10s of GBs depending on your hard disk space (as it uses a percentage). I only use a few gigs for System Restore or you can disable it entirely.

(2) Reduce size of Recycle Bin / empty it, right click on the desktop icon > Properties > reduce the sliders to something like 2% and make a habit of using Shift + Del key to permanently delete stuff you know you definitely won't want back.

CCleaner is great for getting back space from temp files and deleting update uninstallers can help although I find the uninstallers are really quite small these days (especially if you computer already came with the latest service packs).

If you us iTunes/Limewire/eDonkey/Torrents/stuff what downloads stuff then check the download/music folders aren't somewhere discrete e.g. in Shared Documents or a Local Settings / Temp folder, and move what you want out or delete them (be careful since some music apps put all your music there and that is the only copy of it).

If you have downloaded large torrents in RARed sections and need to extract, make sure to delete the RAR files once you have your ISO.

Just did the system restore thing, freed up 104gb on my HDD. I was worrying that I'd managed to fill up a 750gb HDD in just over a year.

Yeah it uses a mental amount of space; you only really need the past two weeks or so. Alternatively if you haven't been having any problems for a while, you can disable and then re-enable System Restore, deleting all your existing restore points..SNIAFOIANMSDF
