So, because I already subscribe to Google Play Music for my music streaming, I now have an automatic subscription to the new Youtube Music service.

It seems like it's some weird middle ground. It's got a load of live performances and videos seamlessly integrated with the rest of an artist's library, and a similar algorithm based recommendations bit to the main YT site, which works better than the Google Play one, (but without all the fortnite/alt-right clickbait,) but the actual music library is much smaller than the Google Play one, and the layout when you're searching for content seems worse.

I know there are plenty of people out there who use Youtube as their main source of music, and as an entry point to streaming for them, and providing more of the video base content they want, this is probably a really good thing, especially as it will finally let you play Youtube in the background while you use other apps, but it just seems a bit lacking. Obviously I'm not losing anything by getting this as an extra, but I don't think I can see myself using it.

There's also Youtube Premium: https://www.youtube.com/premium?ybp=IgcSBW11c2lj

Ad free, and the same background streaming, and some exclusive content/original shows.

Ad free and background streaming are two features I'd really want, but I'm not sure I really want to be forking over the £12/month they're asking for the privilege, especially as I doubt the original shows are going to be the kind of stuff I'm interested in. I think I'll just continue chucking a buck a month on Patreon at my favourite channels who put out non-monetised videos, as I am.

YouTube is already ad free though :shifty:
And you can already have background streaming with the right app on your phone.

Link?

Also, any help removing adverts on the mobile app would be appreciated, too.

Background streaming of audio for podcast style videos should really be bloody free. Charging for features that are done client side is rough.

Not sure in the value of this outside of music and even then the competition is cheaper

I'm on Android and use OGYoutube. Let's me play videos even with the screen turned off.
No idea what you can use for iOS.

If you want ad free YouTube on mobile the only way I know of requires you to root your phone and use an Xposed module. At least that was what worked a few years ago, I haven't bothered rooting since my Nexus 6P. Never bothered with my S8+ or S9+

The official YouTube app did used to allow background streaming with the screen off, but once YouTube Red came along they decided to take it away and make it a premium feature to try and encourage people to subscribe.

Man, the difference between playing a playlist on PC/PS4/Roku and mobile is crazy. You get adverts every few songs on t'other 3, sometimes the gap between ads is even longer. On mobile? Ads between every song! And they're lengthier than on other devices. Weird, eh. It's like they don't want you to use YT on mobile. ...I wonder if it's different if you use desktop site on mobile? Though that has issues of its own

I knew there was a reason they've never bothered giving it the ability to stream when it's minimized :slol: Good grief.

I think the music streaming alone is the same price as Spotify et al, at a tenner a month. Even then, the library has a lot of gaps in it.

It's the separate YouTube Premium that's more than Netflix and Amazon Video.

Not sure if there's a discount if you buy both.

YouTube Red used to be the same price as Google Play Music All-Access, which was originally £7.99, and included Google Play Music All-Access for free. This is what I've been paying for years now. YouTube Premium includes a Google Play Music All-Access subscription too, but costs more. From my point of view, all that's happened is my YouTube Red subscription has got £4 more expensive for me.

It came out in the UK a couple of days ago.

Does this mean that we can watch Cobra Kai for free if we sign up?

It never was, but in the US and Canada and a couple other places maybe, Google Play Music All-Access subscriptions were converted to YouTube Red ones for the same price.
