Popular mirror and download site FileFront today revealed that it will "indefinitely suspend" site operations on March 30, 2009 due to current economic conditions.

The sited urged users to download and archive any files they may want before that date.

While owner Ziff Davis recently sold the bulk of its video game-related sites, which also resulted in the closure of print magazine EGM, buyer UGO was reportedly uninterested in FileFront. The site continued operations as part of Ziff's PCMag Digital Network.

"We would like to give a warm thank you to all of you who have been part of the FileFront communities we have built together," reads FileFront's farewell. "Your support has had a meaningful impact for all of us here at FileFront. Again, we want to give you a sincere 'thank you' for your support over the years and wish you all the very best."

I'm sure ZD could've patiently waited for a more responsible buyer to acquire their websites other than UGO.

FILEFRONT LIVES!

http://welcome.filefront.com/

FileFront has been acquired by the original founders of the site and will NOT be suspended as previously announced. This is NOT an April Fool's Joke.

After learning about Ziff Davis Media's plan to suspend FileFront at the end of March, the original founders of FileFront made the decision to buy it back from Ziff Davis Media.

We're happy to announce to the gaming community that as of today, April 1st, 2009, FileFront is a completely independent company again and is no longer part of Ziff Davis Media. All previously suspended services should be active and working again. We thank Ziff Davis Media for their cooperation and willingness to keep the site and community alive.

Due to the very unfortunate timing of this event and related announcements on March 24th and April 1st (April Fool's Day), we'd like to make it perfectly clear that:

1) 1) The March 24th announcement about FileFront suspending its operation was NOT an early April Fool's joke.

2) This announcement about the original founders buying back FileFront from Ziff Davis Media is also NOT an April Fool's joke.

3) We're making this announcement on April 1st because the deal was completed today and we want to bring all services back online immediately.

4) We would NEVER suspend FileFront as an April Fool's joke.

5) We are happy to be back!

FileFront has existed in one form or another (originally as FileLeech and Voodoo Extreme's downloads) since 1997. In the last 12 years, FileFront has become the gaming community's most comprehensive and trafficked library hosting millions of files for thousands of games while requiring no registration and providing uncapped download speeds. We look forward to improving FileFront and serving the gaming community for years to come.

Welcome home. Game On!

Email us, founders@filefront.com

Very happy about this, it's a great site.

Filefront might get better now the original people have it again. It only became gooseberry fool in the last few years.

I prefer Gamershell as it usually gives better dl speeds, but I find it a pain to navigate. Filefront has a very important community and its a piece of piss to find the files you need.

Well I know that a lot of game fansites did entire rips off the site. The whole KotorFiles library was dl'ed in about 2 days, I imagine it was the same for a few games.

And, given that the entire business model is based off downloads and ad revenue, how much extra cash do you think they'll have made?

Seems quite a clever idea. Pretend to be shutting down, get a fuckton of hits (and therefore ad revenue), then get "saved" at the 11th hour!

Not saying this is the case, mind, but it does seem awfully convenient.

Don't see how it could be the case considering it's not owned by the same people. So Ziff Davis took the brunt on the servers, and then they sell it to someone else? Also it's not exactly a good long term business strategy, in addition to the fact that you can't do it very often, they've probably lost some people for good because they know think it has shut down and may never go back again to check.

The sale could have taken place way in advance, and they'll have emailed all the subscribers telling them that they've suddenly been saved, and they can come back. And outside of the subscribers, not enough people will have heard of the supposed shutdown for it to make much, if any, difference.

It was on the front page of their site, I'm pretty sure anyone visiting would have noticed.

The question is, how many of those people are non-subscribers, and how many of those would normally use the site enough for it to matter?

1. I don't even think Filefront has a subscription service.

2. If the sale had taken place in advance then the site would have had to pay for all that additional bandwidth, which probably wouldn't have been recouped by any extra money made from adverts.

3. You're just trying to come up with some sort of conspiracy theory about this, even though it would be a completely terrible business plan.

Maybe I've been watching too many movies, and I have become convinced that the internet is nothing but a wretched hive of scum and villainy.
