Tiarny said to split this off into a new thread; I don't know whether I'm being a horribly presumptuous asshole by stealing the new thread OP, but hey, whatever! At least this keeps it seperate from the Paper Mario one, which I believe is still going in some capacity.

Right then, Deus Ex...

>> The easiest way to get Deus Ex if you don't have it is through Steam, it's cheap as hell and runs on everything. <<

Alternatively, you can also get Deus Ex on CD-ROM, but see the potential issues below:
  • If you've got it on CD and you're installing onto a multicore computer you need to make the setup files on the disc execute on one core only. When the installer is running, but before it copies any files, go to Task Manager and set its affinity to just one core.
  • Once it's all installed from CD, you'd usually have to have the disc inserted to play, but Winckle knows a simple way to make it playable without the disc in the drive. He says, you can just edit one line of deusex.ini (found in the system subfolder of the Deus Ex install folder). Find the line beginning with CdPath and change it so that it reads: CdPath=..\

--

Guide to updating Deus Ex's graphics:
  1. What everyone should be doing:
    1. Install the game by whatever means you have.
    2. Run the game, selecting Direct3D renderer when prompted. (Enable VSync if it asks.)
    3. Go to the in-game options and turn everything up to max (make sure 32-bit colour is enabled).
    4. Get the Deus Ex fixer tool.
      1. Select "multiprocessor fix" in the tool if applicable.
      2. Select Non-Scaling GUI.
      3. D3D Renderer.
      4. Common: (your maximum resolution here)
      5. 32-bit colour with detail textures.
      6. Field of view: (your aspect ratio here)
    5. Launch the game and play! Unless you want to tweak more, in which case read on...
  2. What people with mid-to-high-end systems should be doing:
    1. Get the HD models and textures.
      1. Install the HDTP exe.
      2. If you've got Deus Ex through Steam:
      3. Or if you're on CD-ROM and you want something I've personally tried and got working:
      4. .. Go to your Deus Ex install folder.
      5. .. See that HDTP folder? Go into it!
      6. .. Copy the contents of the HDTP/system subfolder into the main /system folder.
      7. .. Same again, but for /textures.
      8. Else, if you've got Deus Ex on CD-ROM, and you want slightly better visuals:
      9. .. From now on launch the game through HDTP.exe.
    2. Now you need to get the absolutely huge (800MiB, but worth it) texture update, New Vision.
      1. Copy everything in the zip (except the OpenGL folder) into /textures in the Deus Ex install dir.
      2. Follow the instructions in zip/OpenGL/instructions.txt to install the OpenGL driver.
      3. Go into Deus Ex, go to Display Options and go to Choose Render Device.
      4. Check the box to see all possible devices, then choose the OpenGL device.
      5. Launch Deus Ex and set up your resolution, bit-depth etc up again.
    3. No-one will blame you for giving up here, but for those with really good PCs...
  3. What people with good DX10 cards (8800GT or above) and a DX10-capable OS (Vista or Seven) should be doing:
    1. Install the Direct3D 10 Renderer.
    2. Go to Deus Ex and go to the bit where you can re-choose your rendering device.
    3. Select to view all devices, and choose DirectX 10 Renderer.
    4. Set up your resolution, bit-depth etc again, and then quit Deus Ex.
    5. Find the bit at the bottom of your deusex.ini which says D3D10Drv.D3D10RenderDevice
    6. Change that section so that it reads:

      Code: Select all

      [D3D10Drv.D3D10RenderDevice]
      UseS3TC=True
      Coronas=True
      DetailTextures=True
      ShinySurfaces=True
      HighDetailActors=True
      VolumetricLighting=True
      Precache=True
      Antialiasing=8
      Anisotropy=8
      VSync=True
      ParallaxOcclusionMapping=True
      LODBias=0
      AlphaToCoverage=True
      DescFlags=0
      Description=DX10 Renderer for High-End Systems
    7. You're done! That's as good as it's going to get. Good job!

I'm in. I'll buy the game tonight and start some time later - I'll upgrade the visuals so long as it doesn't kill my laptop.

SO in. Deus Ex is a game I've always wanted to play but never did. And I'm totally blind going into this (all I know is that it's a FPS/RPG hybrid and that it's apparently brilliant) so easy on the spoilers plz.

Is it available on Steam?

Yep, it's available on Steam for £5.99. It's also GOTY version, so get it! :mrgreen:

And thank you Winckle/Karlprof :mrgreen:

I still don't see how Deus Ex could've won over Second Sight. Bah.

I'm surprised there isn't a bundle with the sequel to be honest.

I'll probably get the 'prof to edit my video links into the first post. Severely doubt I'll record my entire playthrough - severely doubt anyone would want to watch it all - but for the key levels/setpieces I'll definitely get footage.

KILLER QUESTION

Which skin tone JC will YOU choose?
