They are co-developing, whatever that means.

They must be doing other things too, but god knows what they are.

There's always something dingy about Sony's conferences.

I think it's why I prefer them, they're almost quite British.... ;) Nah, I know what you mean, it's frustrating as they've often got some great stuff to show. They need a better conference director, if that position even exists.

To be honest I don't think it was that bad a conference. Microsoft are pushing Kinect hard, so they had to show a wide range of material for that device. It shouldn't be used as the primary input for more traditional games so there isn't much they could really show to please the so called hardcore but I'm sure the casual audience the device is suited for were thrilled.

If I remember correctly, Rik was watching with his children who seemed to love what was shown. It just wasn't a conference aimed at those who frequent gaming forums or are used to the typical showing from M$.

It's just a Microsoft repeat of Nintendo's family friendly conference all those years ago.

 He would say that.

The trouble is, Nintendo did it right. Yeah they appealed to the casual gamer, but they've done all that now and now they can focus on us gamers. Microsoft have shot themselves in the foot, same as Sony for now having to focus on the casuals and all the people buying them expecting gamer games all the time are now seriously dissapointed. Nintendo never had that problem as you knew what you were getting with the Wii.

I thought 2010 was Microsoft's worst E3.

Can't say I agree with all the criticism MS are getting. So they focussed on some kinect stuff. But all the big hitters from MS were present and correct. All this talk about MS turning their back on the hardcore is just nonsense. What games were you looking for from them that apparently have been moved aside by kinect? The only dev team that might otherwise be working on some core games seems to be Rare and they don't appear to be working on anything!

I would imagine MS are probably quite happy with their conference. If the reactions of my girls to the Disneyland game and the Star Wars game (whether it looks rubbish to us) are anything to go by, they will be having another big holiday this year.

The 360 is all but dead to me these days, the PS3 never even got started and the Wii is best left in it's box.

The Microsoft conference was a huge embarrassment for all concerned, not least those forced to endure it's banal, self-congratulatory tone and it's cringeworthy kinect demos from the usual stage school brats. Ugh.

This year's E3 belongs totally to Nintendo. The WiiU is a revelation and has been a genuine 'sit-up-and-take-notice' moment for me. It looks simply amazing. DO WANT. How soon before I can put down the queen's heads on one?

Interesting article (regarding Kinect). I don't own Kinect, but all of my concerns with it based on what I've seen and read are covered. It would be interesting to know how many units are actually in homes. MS really need to get some titles out that are really appealing and not in a 5 minute blast kind of way. Something like Heavy Rain would be fantastic for Kinect as it would work well with its limitations.

I think he needs to go work for a different mag. Reminds me of the negative twonks who write for 360 gamer too. I think they want to be writing for ps mags but didn't get the job.

I find it hard to say it was the worst ever purely because there was no moment where I couldn't understand the potential appeal of what was being shown on stage. I remember watching the demos of Scene It and You're in the Movies and thinking who in their right mind would even consider paying for this gooseberry fool. Star Wars Kinect looked rubbish but sadly it looked like the sort of rubbish that will find an audience and while the Disney and Sesame Street games hold very little appeal for me (I do love Cookie Monster though :shifty: ) they look like they at least do what they're aiming for. It also strikes me as overly harsh to criticise the Fun Labs stuff for being tech demos when thats all they were billed as and could serve as a useful tool for devs who want to see what sort of ideas people respond well to.

The way the Bing search is initiated is a shameless attempt to help establish the brand in peoples minds but if it does work properly then its the sort of thing I could see becoming second nature extremely quickly. If there was a version of iPlayer announced for the 360 which I think is inevitable given the international rollout of the service is due to start this year and you can use the Bing search to go through its content it could be easier than using the application to find it.

It was bad but it wasn't as bad as the article suggests.

The us of yet almost makes it sound like a threat.

To be fair to Microsoft, they basically showed off a series of 1 million plus sellers.

Why have Microsoft simply 'dropped' remedy and not bought the IP for Alan Wake? :x

Seriously pissed off at this. I love the first game and it was being backed to the hilt until a new guy took over (matrick i think?) and he just basically thinks its rubbish from what I can gather.

That would be the Disney game from Frontier.

i'm not keen on him at all. he has been at the heart of the casual drive and losing too many core games.

ok this stuff sells right now but when it fades he risks having killed it off.

have they def dropped Alan Wake then? ithought another was coming?

Microsoft have dropped Alan Wake, Remedy will continue with the franchise I'd imagine. They'll need a new partner though, maybe EA?

I just found this:

Oskari Häkkinen, head of franchise development for Finnish developer Remedy Entertainment, told Joystiq last month that, in fact, a new Alan Wake project was under development. Admittedly, we were getting a little ahead of ourselves when we arrived at E3 this year in full Alan Wake cosplay so the absence of the latest A. Wake project – rumored to be an XBLA title called Alan Wake's Night Springs – hit us pretty hard.

So we tracked down Microsoft Studios chief Phil Spencer to grill him about Remedy's reveal and the dearth of Alan Wake games in Microsoft's E3 lineup. "I read that," Spencer said, laughing about the news. "I don't know that they've signed it with anybody." While Spencer told us that Wake "didn't sell as well as we would have liked," he was clear that it wouldn't affect their working relationship. "I'd love to work with Remedy again," he told us. "We have ongoing conversations with them."

So if Microsoft isn't privy to what Remedy's working on, who is? "I think the stuff they're doing now they wanted to incubate, Mattias and the team," Spencer said. "They wanted to incubate internally. Like I said, I don't think they've signed it with anybody." Well, as long as that's the case, we'll have our Joystiq Publishing representatives get in touch with Remedy and work something out. Our backrub-heavy royalty system is an industry first.

strawberry floating twattrick.

Not enought to have dumped everything that was great about Rare but now the strawberry floater has dropped their best game of last year. Utter wanker. it the platform weren't great with stacks of third party he'd be making it very tough to enjoy xbox right now. I certainly won't be buying the next one if it turns into a casual twattrick fest with none of the games that made xbox great. I'll be buying none at launch anyway, it'll be a wait and see game.

This assuming it's true and they're not just holding off announcing anything. This is far from confirmed.

E3 2011: Microsoft incorporating Kinect into all first-party games
By Tom Magrino, GameSpot
Jun 9, 2011 5:22 pm PT

Video Q&A: Game Studios boss Phil Spencer says internal development houses will integrate motion-sensing tech, but no mandate to do so.

LOS ANGELES--Microsoft continued to heavily push Kinect functionality at it's 2011 Electronic Entertainment Expo media briefing, with the publisher trotting out a number of third parties who had committed to the Xbox 360's motion-sensing technology. Of course, one of the biggest advocates for Kinect is remains the platform holder itself.

In an interview with GameSpot, Microsoft Game Studios head Phil Spencer said that he believes all first-party games going forward will incorporate Kinect functionality.

"It's not a mandate that everything we do in first-party has to support Kinect right now," he said. "But I will say, specifically with voice, that there are some things that just seem to make navigating and playing games so much easier, that I would guess the answer will be yes in the end, that you'll see all first-party games using some form of Kinect functionality."

"Whether it's voice in Forza or head-tracking in Forza, which you wouldn't say is somehow turning the Forza gameplay experience on it's head," he continued. "Rather, it's just using the advantages of what Kinect brings to make the experience better. So I think there's some specific examples where Kinect makes everything better."

For more from GameSpot's interview with Phil Spencer, in which he discusses third-party Kinect support, Halo 4, and Nintendo's Wii U, check out the video below.

On a serious note, it's no different than adding Move or 3D support.
