The clues were all there - a book with writing too small to read, a magnifying glass, and I think a phone hint too if you get stuck
I read the books really early on and completely forgotten about the small text.
On the jumping thing. I think part of why it took me so long to remember (beyond being thick and tired) is that the game misleads you a lot in terms of height. There are lots of things you should be able to jump over (those small walls which you can chuck bombs over but nothing else even though its as tall as your ankle). I continuously found myself trying to walk "behind" tall enemies thinking that I'd be safe. Its not really an issue with the game as such but more just how I read it. I'm sure its the same with Zelda 1 and ALTTP but in that I wasnt been told to start jumping over things. So when the moment comes and its arms are spinning at you my instinct wasn't to jump over it. It was to try and move around it. It actually works brilliantly once I'd started hopping over the arms and was shooting the bastard in the eye.
I'd happily give this an 8 by today standards. Back then I'd have given it a 9. I'd want to have given it a 10 but between a few things along the way plus stuff like the acorn texts and the you touched something heavy/cold/cracked/hairyandsmellyandcoveredinagoo my brain wouldn't have let me.
Think on the whole I enjoyed it more then ALTTP. ALTTP does a few things a bit better. The dungeons feel more distinct and the overworld is a little easier to just get about in. But some of that is probably down to Game Boy vs. SNES.
Anyway. I'm not sure what to do next. The Oracle games are next up but I dunno if I should go straight in. Or take another wee break. Bit worried about doing them back to back and getting jaded. I had Seasons back in the day. Cant remember how far I got. Pretty far in. I remember being determined to not use a guide and getting badly stuck and never going back.
